    Thanks everyone for all the great questions! An additional note from Dr. Barnard regarding the question on iodine: "Iodine plays roles in the body aside from its functions for the thyroid. So you’ll still want to include healthy iodine sources in your diet.”

    I eat the "plant based diet" and I eat a plate of different fruits every day, and throughout the day. I eat veggies for lunch and dinner. My health and my life completely changed when I started the "plant based diet". I went to my doctor, and my BP and Thyroids are completely under control.

    I can't believe I'm saying this, but I just fell in love with Dr Barnard when he responded to the question about food addiction. His response was indicative of such 'compassion'. He sounds genuine when he speaks to us and is not at all condescending. Makes you feel like he truly understands how some of us feel about our food addictions, and that we can work through it. I pray for strength to get through this transition to plant base foods and find the pure healthy route!!!

Rather than 'pray' for strength...EAT for strength, that is plant based all the way...once you are past 30 days you will begin to feel so different you'll never want anything else!...Just think of what you are doing for yourself and take pride and glory in your life accomplishments!...this is a forever life style and after a while you won't even think about it, you'll just do it. Keep your house 'clean' of junk food and you'll be better off...if it's in your house, it's in your mouth...rock on vegan compadre!...x

    Love when you interview Dr. Barnard, he is awesome! Great information! I have a question, for the future, is it safe to consume no nuts or seeds? Or are these foods essential to being healthy? Will not eating enough fat in your diet cause you to overeat other foods as your body is craving the fat? If you exercise frequently do you need more fat?

  • @windre

    @windre

    all the epidemilogical studies say those who eat nuts live longer even when controlling for other factors. things like flaxseed have cancer fighting lignans and walnuts are associated with increased critical thinking and endothelial function. because of lipid bioavailability, the fats in nuts and seeds are processed differently in our body compared to things like oil and animal products. this applies to all nuts except peanuts. nut butters dont seem to be associated with longevity either. its to the point where Dr. Dean Ornish has introduced nuts and seeds to his program, and Dr. Essylsten even reccommends a tablespoon a day of ground flax. Dr. Michael Greger has dug into a lot of the literature surrounding nuts, and Joel Furhman has a good compilation of the epidemilogical associations. Still, reccommendations seem to be to eat a handful or less a day, despite evidence that nuts dont effect weight.

    I have Crohn's, I tried an elimination diet,. Only eating potato, pea, green beans, sweet potato, for a month and felt much better. As I added more foods in I found nuts and seeds and cooking oil increased inflammation. Olives and avacado also caused inflammation. Cutting salt actually made a huge difference. I limit fruit and avoid dried fruit. I find I eat as much greens as I can and huge variety of veg and beans. I also have wheat and soy allergy so cut those. I suggest really cutting out everything for a month elimination diet then gradually add in more food and see how you feel. I think a big part is feeding the good bacteria what they need, I don't think they like salt and fat. And be on the look out for which proteins cause autoimmune reactions. For what to eat I found chef AJ has some good ideas. As for my Crohn's my inflammation levels are normal without medication and I feel my body is healing.

Than I got all well and all symptoms disappeared. 3 years now. Follow HighCarb Health. Also, sleep well and mange your stress levels. Make sure to eat 100/: clean. Don’t eat outside food. See what are you allergic too. I found corn starch and popcorn doesn’t work for me. Please stay away from fake vegan food. Also,intermittent fasting helps a lot. Another thing is sometimes it’s better to cook your veggies if your body is not use to eating raw.

Is this only true for people with high blood pressure, or will eating a beneficial food further lower the blood pressure of someone with low blood pressure? Also, is a person who’s pushing 70 but with no health issues except osteoarthritis and normal-low blood pressure, free to salt things to levels similar commercial foods or might that be harmful?

    I avoided eating most fruit for years because I believe that sort of nonsense. My mom was diabetic and she was told something similar. The polyphenols and fiber in fruit means that the sugars don't affect blood sugar the same as candy or soda pop. Also, most of the sugar is fructose, which is metabolized very differently in the body as compared to glucose.

    Also - Chuck and Dr. Barnard -- I work in a medical setting and really want someone to start addressing those with kidney failure. They are told to go on a renal diet and that means no potatoes, bananas, broccoli, etc. The patients I see love burgers and steak and they get sicker and sicker. No one talks to this population about a Whole Food Plant Based diet - including the dieticians.

    When I was a kid especially during the winter we were allowed one orange, one banana and one apple per week I don't really remember why. But I used to do my brother's chores in exchange for his fruit! And then came the day I went on vacation with my best friend's family. We were all herded into the backseat of a brand new VW camper,🚙 and told we had to sit criss cross applesauce the entire two and a half hour drive to the Cape! Why? Because on the floor of the back seat were five big brown paper bags, one filled with cherries, one with strawberries one with blueberries and blackberries a d the the last two with peaches and plums. I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Of course this was to last 6 kids two weeks, but still.. damn!🍎🍐🍒🍇🍒🥝🍓🍇🍐🍑

    @@Frenchblue8 ; I have a feeling that your parents, like mine, probably thought that fruit was too expensive - except maybe when it was on sale, or "day old" bananas, which are the ones my mom used to get because they were a lot cheaper. Or, maybe your parents thought that fruits were "too sugary"? Thankfully, my brother and I usually weren't limited to a certain number of fruits each week, or even each day. Mom just didn't want us eating anything within one hour before a meal, and generally told us to avoid eating "too many snacks" between meals. She didn't mind if we ate out of the fruit bowl frequently because she didn't want the fruit to just sit there, and go bad. That would've been a horrible waste of food & money, and effort (especially effort, in the case of the strawberries she grew in the back yard, and the peaches, apples, and apricots that she picked & bought from local orchards). She wanted us to help eat those right away, unless she was saving them for a pie, or jello, or preserves. If she was saving them for projects like those, she would always let us know.

    @@jannacoyote4246 sounds truly divine. I think it was more my grandmother because she grew up on a farm and the orchard was very small and so it was known that any of the apples and pears were to be sold and not eaten. That's the only thing I could think of. My mother just hated fruit pretty much except for bananas saying it bothered her, and I quote, "gills", lol. But then she became vegan and now she, like me, can't get enough of the stuff! It's probably the largest portion of my budget and this week we will be trying out the Misfit Produce box delivery service, can't wait!

    Avocados don't spike insulin due to their high fat content but fruit high in carbohydrates due. Fat needs to be included in the diet - fat is the cell walls' building material. Also if calorie consumption gets too low, the body goes into a saving mode and the basic metabolic rate slows down.

    To clear my confusion, ultra-processed carbs (wheat, in the forms of pasta, breads, donuts, cakes, pies, pizzas, etc) and table sugar are not healthy. But complex carbs (whole grains, fruits, veggies) are wfpb healthy and depending on a person’s weight and/or other underlying conditions (diabetes, hi cholesterol), are totally ok? For those not seeking to lose weight, is it ok to drink fruit juices (maybe a normal amt of 400mg or less), 2 to 3 times/week? I’ve also found when I have a bout of diarrhea (usually when eating mushrooms, pistachios, dates) , I have to drink an electrolyte. Also if I drink too much water , I have to add more salt in my diet or else I would feel yucky especially in my throat!
