This is based on real life organized crime. If people know things about you that can get you sent to jail for the rest of your life; and they no longer have income because they are being investigated or actually in jail; then you pay them to keep them from talking unless you can kill them without much blowback. Jail is full of greedy criminals who didn't pay for loyalty. The Fed's literally broke the New York Families, because they could get lots of people to roll for an easier sentence. This even bleeds over into the legal world. A law school buddy worked for a waste management company, and they had old mob guys on the payroll. Legacy costs from buying the business and moving the mob out. I'm sure the same was true when Howard Hughes bought Vegas Casinos from the Mob. Even SMU had legacy costs from when they were paying players. One guy got injured and couldn't pay. They cut his payments and he talked. Brought down the whole program. Legacy costs are real.

In a way it's when he became what he destroyed with Gus. Gus was the kind of guy to murder people in cold blood, hurt children, whatever it took for business, and that's one reason Gus made the big bucks. One thing Walt discounts here is I believe this was their first cook as a new business, sure the legacy costs seem steep now, but Gus didn't get to where he was overnight. If they would have ever gotten to cooking 200 pounds a week again he would have been bringing in over $20,000,000 a year, suddenly legacy costs don't seem so bad.

What I hated about Walt In this scene is how In the previous episode when he tries to recruit Mike, he even admits that their profits would be smaller (at first) but would receive a higher cut as owners not employees. Even Jesse has to correct him in that they’re cooking a fraction amount of meth then they did in Fring’s lab so there was no valid reason besides the legacy cost for Walt to get frustrated with his profit.

So I am sure these guys are incredibly loyal. Except a lot of those guys know Walt, Jesse, and Mike. Now they their safety net from Gus is gone, what’s to stop them from snitching from the cops to get a reduced sentence? Mike made a deal with them where they will pay them out what Gus promised them (about $600,000 each, I would estimate, based on Mike’s 1 million being “way more than any of the others” comment by Hank), and in exchange, they stay silent and don’t mention to the cops they know who Gus’s Star cook was. If they don’t pay them, one of the 9 will talk. And some are in federal custody, so not easy to get to them either, although Walt ended up doing so. It wouldn’t have been ongoing, about 5.4 million would have covered all the 9 guys, once that was paid they would stop having to pay legacy costs.

Since the show tried to explain but clearly failed I will try. As Walt pointed out they're essentially being blackmailed by paying for their silence. The guys who've been locked up have valuable information on Walt, Jesse and Mike, so your choice is to either pay them back what they lost and keep them silent, or not pay them which gives them motivation to go to the police in search for a better deal. I'm surprised you couldn't figure that out since the show pretty much spells it out but hopefully you now understand.

Yea but the only difference is that the taxman doesn't steal his cut from you. Once everyone's paid off, what's left is yours. In society you'd still have to pay your staff, who would be taxed, and then you would alao be taxed. Who wins? Taxman. Not the people doing the fucking leg work

I’m confused on the “the irs gets this much” part. It makes no sense. What exactly do you file that under? If you’re reporting the income u make from dealing meth doesn’t that defeat the purpose?

You actually are completely allowed and encouraged to tax the money you make from illegal means. The IRS doesn't need to know where the income came from, just that you have declared that is income you are receiving. Many criminals in the United States actually file their taxes with the illegal gain because it's safer than not doing so. In fact the whole reason that one of the biggest gangsters in the United States Al Capone was caught, was because he didn't register any of his illegal gains through the IRS, and so they got him for tax evasion.

@@coda8525 but what’s your incentive for telling them the actual amount you made? Why wouldn’t they just tell them they made 1/3 of what you actually did from meth? How would they know?

@@collingrant185 Well you could but you'd also need to spend a third of your earnings. There's literally a scene in either season 1 or 2 where Goodman explains all of this to Jesse. EDIT: Season 3 kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJynt6p9epOodrA.html

@@collingrant185 they are monitoring asset purchases, the zip code you live, any declared transactions, tip offs, and other data indicators. If you buy a half million dollar house on a 50k reported salary, they'll probably have questions. Not reporting enough can kick off an audit and get people in your business fast. Most illegal income is not reported, however, until the criminal is caught. At that point, they file an amended return, pay the fees and interest, and make the IRS whole. This avoids being charged with tax evasion in addition to their other charges.

@@kraff2988 aren't you the smart one... You can't get people to work for you or shut their mouths once they're caught if it becomes apparent that they tend to get "taken care of" in prison. Mobsters buy each other's loyalty, otherwise there's no reason to be involved in this line of business. These are people who otherwise have the professional ceiling of being a manager at a fast food joint. Money and power is what drives them to commit crimes and without any of these motives they might just as well sell you out for the fun of it. They're basically greedy sociopaths.

Nah Walt was REALLY stupid here but made up for it with just killing the guys in jail. He’s stupid here because as it stands these guys are being investigated by feds and being offered deals, if Walt doesn’t pay them nothing is stopping any of them from simply ratting and moving on. Surely he didn’t think money from the sale of methamphetamine was gonna be easily earned and painless
