I am a fan of Mel's from his early beginnings as I am from Australia and similar in age. One of his best performances I think was in the war movie Gallipoli set in Australia and Egypt and they used the Adelaide Railway Station to film the Cairo Ball. While he was filming on location in Egypt, his wife Robyn was giving birth in Adelaide to his first child Hannah, and he had to listen over a rickety phone line to the event. The film was made in 1980/81. His first Hollywood film was The River. He did the Bounty in Australia.
