How Many Rats Can These Mink and Dogs Catch?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

My trained hunting mink Shelby and Thashishi working with our dogs Onsa and Carl to eradicate some rats from a feedlot. Thashishi means "to bite full of holes" in the Omaha Native American language, and she was given this name because of her extraordinarily powerful jaws. Shelby and Thashishi are both new mink, still learning the basics of the hunt.

    I hate to see anything being killed, but that said this is probably the most humane and somewhat natural way for it to be done. The dogs and mink kill it quickly. Humans cause more inhumane and unnecessary suffering and we are supposed to be the smarter species???

    when I was young, my dad had a 50 gal. can with hog feed in it and sometimes my brothers and I would forget to put the top back on after feeding the pigs. when we went back to feed them, there would be between 2 and 6 wood rats in the can so we started carrying our 22 rifles. We would tip the barrel over and let the rats jump out and start picking them off. One time there were around 8 rats or so and they were running like crazy and one ran towards my dog that was laying there watching and when the rat ran by him, he calmly buy quickly snatched it and swallowed it whole.

    I don't intend to ever go hunting if I can help it, nor do I intend to own mink because I'm too much of a softie to provide them with this lifestyle that they need, but I do want to get the book when I have a couple of extra bucks because I want to support you and your critters and because the training fascinates me. I absolutely hate poisoning pests. And I love rats, but I know what kind of damage they can do. We had a rat problem and we didn't want to poison them, so we trapped and released, but the most effective thing that ever took care of the rats we couldn't save, were when a couple of good feral kitties, and possums moved in and filled the predator niche. And when the rats were gone, we fed the cats and inadvertently the possums. Now my dad has some nice companion kitties. I think I would take the predator route over poison any day, and I'm so glad that you do the best you can not to waste the meat. Onsa is getting real good, and I love the new mink!

    7:50 I guess what you say is that it is actually inhumane to use poison due to one of the reasons being the rats suffering a slow, painful death. I mean you stated you are an animal lover at the beginning of the video so I do hope you meant that! I found this video very interesting btw! Minks look really cute imo! I hate seeing any animal dying but I understand that in this case these people have no other option. At least they seem to die within a few seconds or even instantly by your extremely smart dogs and mink!

  • @vishnu79

    Poison is an effective, but highly indiscriminate killing tool when used to control pest populations like this. On a working farm (like this one) the poison can leach into the water/soil from rain and can pose a danger to livestock and children (who may not know enough to not play with the poison bait), and will often kill other animals besides the target pest. Poison is good for controlled or enclosed spaces with little contact with food or water sources, like crawl spaces and attics, but is sub-optimal when used outdoors. When using domesticated/trained animals (dogs, for example) to destroy invasive pest populations, the targeted pest usually dies rather quickly, and so this process could be described as "humane", but I think it would be more accurate to describe it as "more effective" when the limitations of other potential methods are taken into account. That said, Joseph does very good work, and his animals are quite well-trained and effective.

    Those minks have eyes like my cat and I find it hilarious. Also, you could use a rolling log trap on an oil drum to catch the rats live, and kill them quickly. The normal way of using those traps is to put water in the bucket and the rats will drown, but that's but as quick of a death.

    Truly Infamous Wild rats are super-smart and while it would catch a few younger and inexperienced rats, others would quickly learn of its danger and avoid it. It's not a quick humane death either. Rats are excellent swimmers and a rat would only drown after swimming around for a long time -even hours - before it was exhausted and drowned. Trained minks and dogs are fast and no rat that they reach can escape.

    This is a fascinating video. I used to have a rat problem around my home until one day, I witnessed my dog be the most effective solution. After watching her chase down and kill a rat so fast that I almost missed it, the bates and traps became redundant that day. The dog hears a rat under our home and she gets this cute look in her eyes. I open the door in time for her to charge out and do her natural thing. She’s the best ratter! Now we wait for rats like sport. She loves it.

    Joseph, is there any concern of a rat bite and rabies or do they get rabies shots? After viewing your episodes I learned enough to talk a friend out of getting a mink(black market). If was their thought they would be like a ferret, I referenced you and that they are NOT ferrets. Luckily this person isn’t getting it. (Didn’t even know minks were a black market animal)

  • @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    Fortunately rabies is EXTREMELY rare among pretty much all rodents. Beavers and woodchucks are the most common rodent carriers, and even with them it's exceptionally rare. Even when the rare event occurs that a rat or squirrel did contract rabies, they lack sufficient saliva glands necessary to infect another animal with their bite, making it unlikely for them to even be able to pass on rabies if they did have it.

    Kaidosbuddyagain Doberman in the USA there is no reported rabies on rats. Third world only. Most of times rabid animals kill the rat or rats die in a week. Rabies have to incubate in the host for over a week, ten to twelve days. I have a Huge rat problem outside my house so I did a little research on rabies in rats. Sometimes my Cocker Spaniel kills the rats so I was concerned about that.

    Onsa, the more leggy one with a shorter coat is my dog and she is 41% staghound (basically a type of gray hound bred specifically for hunting coyotes), 37% racing gray hound, 13% English pointer, and 9% Saluki. The more stocky dog with pointy ears is my friends dog Carl. If you look at some of my older videos you would see several with Carl in them. Carl is 1/2 border collie 1/4 Catahoula leopard hound and 1/4 Pharaoh Hound.

    Actually Onsa looks like a sighthound; their sight is much better than their sense of smell. Running down prey rather than sniffing them out. Its also telling that she makes very little noise. Hunting dogs that use smell more are unsurprisingly called scenthounds (think like a Beagle). We used to use them a lot here in the UK to hunt foxes. Sighthounds like Onsa rely more on sight and are mainly more athletic, used to hunt fast agile prey like rabbits or deer; if you're hunting rats though you would usually want something like a terrier.

  • @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    Onsa is actually a pointer lurcher, so a mix between sight hounds and English Pointer. Because of the little bit of pointer she has in her, she has a little better nose that say a pure greyhound would likely have. Her exact mix is 41% staghound (basically a type of greyhound bred specifically for hunting coyotes), 37% racing greyhound, 13% English pointer, and 9% Saluki.

    Plot twist: How Many Mink And Dogs Can These Rats Catch?

  • @kaidosbuddyagaindoberman9119

    2nd stupid question. Farms are notorious for cats. Would your mink go after a cat, say it was a case where the mink barn hunted and there happened to be a small cat in there. I ask as I’m wondering whether the mink kills all or specifically vermin(considering weasels will often take rabbits, why not id assume)

  • @GCOSBenbow

    @GCOSBenbow

    6 жыл бұрын

    Cats would put up a fair fight againts a mink. Due to the baggy skin around the scruff it would be very hard for the mink to get a choke down. Minks themselves are also fairly fragile and the cat would outweigh the mink a fair bit. I'd have thought both would probably ignore each other.

  • @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    @JosephCartertheMinkMan

    6 жыл бұрын

    Depends on the mink in question. Most mink fear cats, some ignore them, and a few will actively hunt and kill them. Like bendybow said, cats are much larger and quite the formidable opponent for a mink, but a super confident and aggressive mink will kill them, regardless of the size of the mink and cat in question (assuming we are talking domestic house cats of course). The larger buck mink are more likely to have a go at a cat, and if they try are more likely to succeed in killing one. But I've seen even small female mink (1.6 lbs to be exact) kill adult feral cats. It's not common by any means, but it is possible if the mink wants it bad enough.
