There's a children's farm not far from my home, and they let the children handle their rats. They are adorable - so friendly and clean. I have some great pictures of my daughter with a light-grey rat standing on her blonde hair. They are much more fun, interactive and friendly than the numerous hamsters I had as a child.

You are so right! I was amazed at how much more playful and affectionate they are in comparison to hamsters. Very intelligent too. I had one that would use the litter box, and he learned how to do it all on his own.

@@laur7247 Yes, exactly that. They let children bottle-feed the kids (baby goats), and handle/feed the chickens, rats, and other animals. There's horse rides, and tractor rides (mostly for the adults with children too young to ride the horses). They have "event" days when they sheer the sheep, or have unusual animals borrowed from other places like ostriches, alpacas, and donkeys. There's a cafe too. Quite a nice peaceful day out with young children. It's regretful that mine have grown up. Have to wait for grandchildren now.

I look at death differently, it's more about giving them a good life and a good quality of it. Once they pass, there's more rats who are waiting to be loved. A shorter lifespan also means you have room for more that are lonely.

@@derealized797 Yes, so true. I have taken care of dozens of different species over the course of my life, most of them special needs animals. When I was torn apart with grief at their passing, people reminded me of the good life they had with me (as close to their natural habitat, and with love and good food), and this was somewhat of a consolation. Still, I live with this low level depression at how much animals suffer at human hands, especially food animals and such, and how stoic and heroic they are in the face of these cruelties.

@@jenv9782 the cat i have now was a stray that showed up at the door, he was real thin like he hadn't eaten in a long time, and the way he acted for a while seems he escaped abuse. He came in and insisted on staying and who could say no. It took time but he's a whole different cat now. He's a little overweight now, he went from never playing to bouncing off the walls and zooming around hyper. He shows ne his belly a lot so i guess there's been trust. Looking at him today you'd never know. I set up a little cat bed, his bed, at the foot of my bed, where he's usually curled up. He always comes over to me too, stretch out close against me, get pets and stare at me. I think i gave him his first normal life. He's a good cat. Rats are very sweet pets. It is heartbreaking that they don't live very long because if you treat them properly you will fall madly in love with them. They're playful, loving, very intelligent, and entertaining. I've had two pairs, it's important to get them in same sex pairs to avoid conflict and to give them a companion when you can't be with them all the time. They love healthy treats, and fresh foods like beans, yogurt, cheese, corn, green beans, cornbread, and the occasional cheese cracker is a favorite treat to supplement their pellets. They are fastidious cleaners, but they do dribble a little urine on their travels outside of the cage. Mine were free roaming, and would return to the cage for food, and night time sleep, but would mostly run around on the couch and wrestle each other, or snuggle up between my legs under the blanket and pass out with me petting them. Vet care is minimal, and it's easy to tell if they aren't feeling well. My two females lived for about three years, and my males a little over two. It was like losing a dog or a cat how much I loved them, and I had them cremated to be spread with my own ashes along with the many other animal friends I've loved over the years. I love my life, but I do look forward to the time I cross the Rainbow Bridge and all my furry companions and I are reunited for eternity. It wouldn't be heaven without them.

I've kept rats for over 20 years and have already had to say goodbye to about 50 rats... it's always difficult and it never gets easier! but you use this short time extensively and on the other hand, you have the opportunity to get to know new characters again and again if you integrate new noses into the pack! we also do everything for our noses... only recently we had to have one of our koji's legs amputated because he had a fast-growing and very aggressive bone tumor... Unfortunately, the way the animals are kept in the video is not correct, since rats are pack animals, keeping them in pairs is not species-appropriate and this can lead to behavioral problems and just because the two rats are still tame and playful does not mean that you can ignore it!

I never saw them as tiny dogs because they were so much their own selves. My first rat, Ben, was nearly four by the time he died having lived all through my sixth grade science class year, eoy adoption, 7th and 8th grade and more. He grew to be 18" nose to tail tip, was very mellow, sweet, playful and loved pulling the stuffing out from under the couch in the family room not endearing him to my mother, though I always stuffed it back after his excursions. Ben rode on my shoulders under my long hair through the mall and delighted friends and neighbors and strangers with his little ratty nose kisses, penetrating gaze and intelligence. I pray he's there at the rainbow bridge after I leave my human body to forgive me for my childish imperfect care, especially at the end of his life. All sentient beings deserve our regard, care and loving kindness.

She wanted me to put poison for the rats in the "rat infested woodpile". I refused, which made her angry. At night they would come and sleep with us in bed. They would slide into an open hand, or even under our neck. We could wake up and make the bed around them, and they wouldn't even wake up. They were trained so that if they wanted to eat what we were eating, they had to wait at the side of the plate and we would push food to them. The rule was no walking on the plate. Yes rats do act like small dogs. I had a rat called kulov and she was absolutely the best pet I've ever owned. She didn't use the huge cage I'd built her. She went everywhere with me, sitting on my shoulder and then she'd sleep in my sleeve or pocket. She loved swimming in the bath, used a litter tray and responded to her name. They are super friendly, loving and very hygienic. R.I.P. KULOV X

Pip and Penny are lively and adorable. Over the years we had various rodents. We had mice, gerbils, hamsters, chinchillas, and spiny mice. But the rats we had showed the greatest personality, affection and intelligence. Minnie was the runt of the litter but if a cat tried to steal her playtime on my daughter's lap there were consequences. And Squiddle was the darling of my grandkids. Sadly they don't live long, but Squiddle got an elaborate funeral that lasted three days.

As we took a small break, before lifting their giant cage, we saw they moved their wood chip bedding like we did with the carpet and throw over everything which would be in their way. I brought an albino rat home when I was in high school. My mom told me there was no way I could keep her. A couple days later I came home from school and found my mom holding her. About a yr later a book fell on her, my mom literally tried to give her mouth to mouth🥺sadly we lost her BUT after that I started adopting lots of rats! 30+ years later we have had countless amounts of wonderful loving rats and have changed a lot of minds how people feel about them! I always encourage rats over hamsters, gerbils and ginny pigs! They are a wonderful 1st pet!

I call my three rats pocket dogs. Rats are so freakin amazing, they are like the best parts of cats and dogs mixed together in a palm-sized package. I gave one of my babies a hug today (he doesnt like to sit still when held unless being scratched) and he just snuggled into my neck and stayed still for a solid 30 seconds just letting me hug him. He never sits still like that. Sweet sweet animals, everyone should know the joy of having 2 or 3 of these amazing creatures in their life.

They really are gentle and very intelligent. I only ever felt a "bite" once (a bare pinch in my case) because I gave one a people food (should not have) with my fingers (at the time ditto) and he INSTANTLY knew that was wrong and he'd missed, and ran away from a beloved treat to hide. I had to coax him and stroke him. I swear he felt BAD about doing it. They're sweet beings, I have found, at least in the handful I've met.

We used to have rats. It started out with my daughter wanting a hamster. I took her to a pet store, the little hamster was brought out of the cage, into my hands, and sunk his teeth deep into my hand. No hamster. But the store worker said "if you can get over the stigma of them, I do suggest a rat". He brought out this cute little female, my daughter's teary eyes lit up like a happy Christmas tree, and we took a rat home. We ended up getting a second, then a third. When the third on finally passed away after 3 long years, we've yet to get another rat. But they were just incredible and very attentive pets. They loved having people around, and they loved to be..well... loved.

Guys you need to tame hamsters, ANY hamster is going to be nervous moving to a new home, but it doesn't take long 3-7 days for them to settle down and realize we're not harmful to them, keep them in their cage during this time, dont disturb them unless they want to play, offer them food through the bars of the cage and start offering your hand to them when a few days have passed to let them get to know it, don't pick them up until they're comfortable with you. They just operate a little different than rats do but they can make just as good pets once you've earned their trust

I had a pet rat Blondie (she was yellow) and she live to 4 years old. She started getting tumors under her neck, was obviously in pain, so I had to have her put to sleep. She certainly changed my opinion of rats, she was so loving and so smart... I sometimes well up with tears because when I had her put to sleep, she kept breaking away from the Vets hands, ran up my arm and hid under my hair on my neck. I know they don't live long, but I honestly think they can live more than a year or two, as Blondie did. She loved to climb up her 3 story cage and sit at the edge of her shelf and watch "The Fam." Pet rats taught me as an adult, to never listen to the bad hype, judge for yourself. I will never forget what a loving little girl that little Ratsky was. She certainly wasn't anything like the rat stereotype.
