He can't fly, so if he was in the wild, he might perish quickly. Idk about mating, providing for chicks and teaching them how to survive. Is that totally instinctual, or would he have learned that by his bird family, too?

"He's a wild bird" Sure he is. He lives in your yard, wakes you up every morning, asks for pets, responds to voice commands, and hides from other members of his own species. Totally wild.

You can only consider an animal not to be wild when it's domesticated. Ravens haven't really been domesticated.. they're too intelligent for that. Pet isn't the right word. Companion might be.

I'm torn, because I'd just let Walt inside, even if he's technically a wild bird, I don't think he'd be able to go back into the wild, he's pretty much domesticated at this point, and it almost feels like, borderline mean to ignore the poor thing when it's outside the window. You can wait all you like for him to grow up, but it sees you as it's mother now.

I feel the same. Walter will never be able to live out on his own, so why not let him free roam outside but come inside as well when he wants to. I wonder if it's a danger for Walter to come in and be around the husky, who she said doesn't like him...If that is the case, then I can understand why she makes him stay outside.

It was a damaged wild bird, and just because she works as a vet, doesn't mean she has a duty to adapt it into her home. But who else would, what was the alternative? Birds are a lot to handle if you live with one, it's a real commitment. So I think it's understandable that she tried to raise him into some kind of semi-wild crow. It seems ok for the bird imo.

My grandma nursed a raven back to health with her mother when she was little. He had a broken wing. He stayed for the winter and left in springtime fully healed. And as soon as the next winter came around, they suddenly heard a weird knocking on the window. Jakob was back to spend the winter in comfort with his human family. He repeated this every year.

The friendship with the dog makes sense. In the wild, ravens and wolves would hunt together and develop friendships, so it could be an instinctual thing where your raven just choose your dog as his best friend. The behaviors of how your dog and raven interact do sorta seem similar to videos I've seen of how ravens and wolves interact when they're having fun together. But your raven definitely seems genuinely happy with you. Given how smart they are, the adult child analogy is pretty accurate.

@@blondbraid7986 The ravens can cue the wolves in onto where prey animals are (or where carrion is), and then the wolves let the ravens pick over the kills and finds, usually after the wolves are done (wolves can break up the food for them) but it isn't unknown to see the ravens eating at the same time. That may sound like they just follow each other just for food but they do actually interact a bit beyond that; ravens will often watch and play with pups and harass prey for the wolves when they're on the hunt, and any animal seen harassing the ravens around the wolves will meet a very swift and violent end.

I started feeding birds a few years ago, got the usual blackbirds, tits, then nuthatches, a pair of coloured woodpeckers, with the jaybirds I started feeding tiny (frozen) pellets (1-2 grams, 2 each time) of minced meat. After about a year, it seems the jaybirds have moved on, about a 100 meters down the road. A pair of crows have taken over, it seems more or less just two. But last year they got a "child", very annoying, because it was constantly begging for food (even though just as big as its parents), and the voice of crows is really not the most beautiful. And this year there is another new one, almost as noisy.

My grandpa had a pet crow when he was a teenager. One day, the crow got loose, so his mother went out to look for it. At one point, she saw some construction workers and stopped to ask the if they had seen a crow nearby. The construction workers laughed at her. But then a moment later, a crow came swooping down and landed on my great grandma's shoulder. She just said, "There you are." to the crow and left, leaving the construction workers speechless. I believe they had that crow for many years.

After moving into my flat 10 years ago I befriended a family of crows so 9 years and I've got their full trust their kids also sit on my shoulders as I feed them. One day I'm at work my ring doorbell alerts me to 2 lads trying to steal my motorbike but unfortunately for them the crows who I've fed for years began attacking these lads who had no choice but to give in. I was gobsmacked. And for that I treated them to a slap up meal literally. I absolutely adore these birds their intelligence is insane and I admit I love them I really do out of respect and cos I've known them so long.

Easy to befriend birds. Assume a relaxed position and put lots of bird seeds around you. Do it in the evening before the sun goes down. With help from the SPCA I learned how and what to feed him, and succeeded in raising him to maturity. Fortunately his troup knew where he was and came often to check out his progress. When he was old enough he flew off to join them, and that was that. Up to that point I'd rescued many lost and damaged birds, but the crow was different. He was far more intelligent and we had a far deeper connexion, right from the start. For the time that I had him he was very high-maintenance, but every second with him was worth it.

Walt really zeroed in on the “AH” part of his name and made it his whole voice. What a good birb.

Yes, Walt is a wonderful addition to your family. A bit of a pain but what he gives in return is priceless. And of course, Walt lucked- out having you as his care-giver benefactior . A win/win . 👍❤️
