How long can Putin afford to wage war in Ukraine? | DW News

How long can Vladimir Putin afford to continue his war in Ukraine without inflicting economic pain on his own people? The narrative around Russia’s economic performance could hardly be more polarized. One camp claims the country is on the brink of collapse, the other that it is stronger than ever, buoyed even by the effect of Western sanctions. With state spending on defense now exceeding investment in sectors like education and health, some analysts are predicting a painful economic hangover after the war ends. DW Business speaks to Alexandra Prokopenko from the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, who formerly worked as an advisor to the Russian central bank.

Said it before, but I'll say it again: DW really is streets ahead of the British and especially American news media. Yet another DW host who asks intelligent questions and gives the interviewee plenty of space to answer fully. A complete contrast to the likes of the extreme poor quality and superficial questioning from the likes of the BBC, asking the same dummed-down questions of every guest, jumping in with the next dumb question before the guest has finished the first sentence of their reply. Well done DW!

Where there's a Will there's a Way. What Sanctions do is increase resourcefulness within the economy. That resourcefulness doesn't register in the GDP; but it does create jobs! Russia is a net food exporter, and now thanks to Sanctions can develope an ' internal economy ' supplying the needs of Russian People & Government. This serves better that allowing the Rothchildes to run the Central Bank.

Don't get me wrong, I am not in a quest of absolute truth but more curious about the general opinion ones can have. I do research for a living, and i know the necessary work to be able to forge an informed opinion on a specific topic. I chose my battle and it's not geopolitics or economy. I think what people find refreshing with dw is the respects of the guests and the fact that they let them speak. it's little to ask, but so many medias get this simple thing wrong. The war has made Putin dictator for life and has allowed him to turn Russia into North North-Korea complete with an invigorated unsecret secret-policy and a legal system devoid of legality. Sure, he has brought death, disability, and/or misery to countless hundreds of thousands of Russians (to say nothing of Ukrainians), but none that he would have considered significant.

This makes you think twice about trading with Russia. Expropriation of foreign companies. China emerges stronger from this. The costs of war are immense. Reserves melted down. Destroyed oil and gas infrastructure. Deaths, a lot of deaths, so demographically it's getting even worse. Instability regarding neighboring countries. As a result, there will be plenty of terrorist attacks and riots. Costs (medical and pensions) for survivors and disabled people. It couldn't be stupider.

Last was met by silence from Putin. Second biggest economy in BRICS, India, has hostile relations with China. Both enjoy very cheap hydrocarbon exports from Russia. They could pay open market price for it, but that's what allies are for, to rip you off. Both demanded being able to pay with their own currency, not Ruble. No. Is it a structured bargaining group like the EU or USMCA? No. BRICS is a loose economic alliance whose name came from a British economist who talked about developing economies. BRICS has repeatedly refused to take steps to make its institution more structured because its members aren't interested. And its members aren't interested because (among other things) they aren't strategically on the same page.

By ending cooperation with Europe, Russia adopted its technology in the dairy industry, which was helped by Italian and French experts who work for money. Haaaaa!!? "When unemployment is low, this means there are less workers available in a case where there is large demand.." - this is odd analysis! Very odd!! The question was whether this low unemployment and economic "boom" in Russia would be sustained AFTER the war. Clearly - after the war, the current factories will be repurposed and workers too will be repurposed away from military production to civilian production. 🤷‍♂ Surely these are NOT independent or unbiased analysts. It looks like the analysis MUST ALWAYS highlight negatives on Russia. And I'm no Russian bot at all, i am looking for sober, unbiased analysis on this conflict. Analysts like this don't help me at all.

Russia has maximum two years and has to significantly reduce spending otherwise there will be serious economic damage that'll last for decades. They are running their economy very hot, 24/7 war production, 40 percent of the entire federal budget on the war, millions of open jobs with not enough people to fill them. It'll all come crashing down if they can't freeze this war within the next two years. That and they'll run out of armor in the same timescale because production is nowhere near attrition.

Russia has a whole life, dozens of years to go to war. As long as our people have not been affected by enemy sanctions, on the contrary, the outflow of capital to the West from Russia has stopped, that what is Russian economists have been dreaming of. There is a lot of money in the country, it is spent on internal infrastructure, on people, which is very pleasant for everyone. Plus, even if the population were somehow affected, we, Russians, as history has shown, are ready to endure a lot of troubles for decades, not to mention minor offenses for the sake of a just, in the opinion of Russians, war, and any Western Russophobia, political agitation against Russians in the media or sanctions against Russia and Russians, only shows the Russian population that Putin has always been right, and this is the right war against the Russophobic West.

@@MikeMike-cc4jk You will have to face up to the fact Russia cannot continue this war forever at this intensity. It's a matter of economics, not individual will. Russia is not a superpower, it is not rich. The West has the resources to wreck Russia and grind it down if it wishes to supply Ukraine. It can do so for years and years to come. 100 billion dollars a year is sustainable for them. For them it is a matter of will, not lack of financial resources. They appear to be finding more will. The West always determined the outcome of this war and the Russian government knows it too. That's why it is trying so very hard to deter Western aid.

Just the EU has 15 trillion dollars more than Russia. 🤣 The ruble is down 60% already and we still have 300 billion of Russian money we can give to Ukraine to help them. That's 3 years of the cost of the entire Russian army budget. The ruble will be down 150% in three years. Russia also has 41 million people with a pension. Almost a quarter of their population and every is dying under 30 in the war. NATO is going to allocate a 100 billion dollars too in the next 4 years outside of the aid of individual countries. I would move to another country if i was Russian.
