I'm getting ready to have right hip replacement surgery. I did have back surgery last year when I discovered Kizik shoes since I could not bend and twist for a while. I now have 3 pairs of different colors and they are wonderful. I do recommend Kizik to anyone having trouble with tying their shoes for any reason.

You are spot on with Kizik brand shoes! I have been wearing mine for about a year and I just bought another pair. They are fantastic! They are so comfortable and so, so easy to put on and off. Just slip you foot in and your done, that’s it! I HIGHLY recommend kizik shoes to EVERYONE! Blessings!

I just had my total hip replacement surgery 5 days ago and today I was discharged, given instruction on how to navigate around and what precautions I have to take, in terms of movement and whatnot. I've followed them, but I kind of feel like the metal hip is moving inside me ... I don't know if it's just my mind playing tricks on me (I do tend to have a very overactive imagination), if it's the incision or something else. I am pain-free (even when walking with crutches) save for some minor instances when I can feel a bit of discomfort and my surgeons assured me before I left that my healing was progressing quite rapidly. On the ride home, by car, i placed myself in a more than generous reclined position so I can't see what could have gone wrong. I'm in my mid thirties, the incision was done posteriorly, minimally invasive surgery; the prosthesis is titanium and ceramic. Is it likely that I'm giving this thing more thought than I should?

I bought two pr of Sketchers Slip In’s they are great but I am only 2 weeks out from hip replacement so not sure how I will do!

This was a great video for options available. My only comment is that I am 75 years old and I had an anterior approach THA. Her comments as to your progress are useful if you are younger, but double the time not 2 weeks but 4 to 6 if you are my age or older. Two weeks recovery time like she suggests is when you are 50 or so.. According to my OTs ,double it at my age 70 or so. I am a young 75,and what they told me was completely in tune with what I experienced. I should point out I did all my preop exercises and done all my post op exercises faithfully. If you don't do the exercises don't expect improvement. Life is like that.

Im 43 having a left total hip. Not sure which procedure hes doing. My question is about putting teds on when alone. Unfortunately i will only have help the first 3 days. Then ill be on my own. I will be using teds for a while bec im scared to death of blood clots as i already have issues with edema in my left foot in the summer. I have yet to find a video on getting them on without help.

The orthopedist that did my posterior approach THA informed me at my 6-week post op check two weeks ago that I will never to become able to assume the figure 4 leg crossing posture necessary to tie my own shoes. I'm neither overweight nor unusually old and didn't have any trouble doing that before his surgery. Is that particular "precaution" (order) still normal these days or does it simply suggest that he didn't bother to "repair" the capsule before sewing the rest of the cut/damaged tissues back together - that's apparently the way they did that procedure before the turn of the century which of course caused lots of embarrassing dislocations. The same guy has refused to authorize any physical therapy whatsoever.

There are also surgeons now who do minimally invasive total hip replacement with a posterior cut.

Are there any good recovery info or product you can recommend for elderly with broken ribs trying to get up/out of bed? Thank you!

Broken ribs are incredibly painful and challenging to manage for anyone! I have found that, depending on the direction to get out of bed and the location of the fractures will make a difference. I like a bed ladder if pulling is tolerated or a trapeze. Bed rails can also be helpful. Combining any of these with silky sheets will make movement less restrictive.

Ihad a lateral hip replacement because I had a femur pin from a fracture in 2012 that had to be removed... nobody told me that I would have issues with shoes and socks and 90 degrees. My foot is still swollen 4 weeks later so I don't want to buy new shoes yet. Last week I discovered that I can put my shoe on if I lie on my bed and do it sideways 😊 I use the gripper and shoe horn. After the first two days it became quite easy and I'm delighted that I didn't need to spend money on things that I won't need for long and can save for decent shoes when the swelling goes down 😊 Thanks for a great video with handy tips for when I'm able to get new proper shoes ❤

Ive discovered more online about this than anywhere. My Dr and PT won't tell me anything

Only a few days ago I watched a video where the Dr only does the anterior hip replacement and he said you can tire your shoelaces that same day. On 8/5/23 I had my hip replaced and my Dr only does the lateral procedure. (side)

It’s definitely becoming more popular to do the anterior approach, which doesn’t have the strict precautions.

gail moon the lateral approach is similar to the posterior approach they both cut mussels and then re-stitch them after the hip is replaced.

Socks are more difficult than shoes. But one copes eventually. Having someone at home to help you is a bonus.

I have not had surgery - yet. And I can’t put on socks or tie shoes. So I bought slip on shoes!

There is a 3rd approach that should be discussed. That is the Superpath method that doesn’t cut muscles. Can you address that?

I’m having my THR on Friday. You raised your leg past 90 degrees which Ive been told should not be done.

I’m having surgery soon. I plan on wearing sandals. No tying involved.

Hiya, it will be a year in two weeks time since i| had my hip operation and I still cannot do a lot of things including putting on tights and my shoes. I had a fall which is why I needed the operation and have to depend on my husband doing these things for me, I was never used to this and find it difficult not being able to do normal things. Please would you have any advice that would help. Many thanks.

I'm confused. I just had a posterior approach done 12 days ago and my doctor told me there would be no cutting of muscle tissue. Please clarify.

Was your incision on the front of your leg. If so they don't cut through any muscle. That's where my incision is. Side incision cuts through everything.

Great video, those shoes are better than the Crocs I typically recommend to my patients.

Every surgeon will specialize on either one of the 3 options and you will not have a choice I just had the lateral approach hip replaced just recently but if I was given the choice I would definitely go for the Anterior approach.

Hip replacement recovery is not linear for all and if it all started with a traumatic fall, you probably had some soft tissue damage prior to the replacement. Have you had any PT?

Unfortunately, all hip replacements are not alike. I’ve never been able to reach my feet since getting both hips replaced. But… no pain and that’s the primary reason for getting them replaced. Suggestion… would you do some videos on how to put on winter coats, sweaters, etc if someone has lacks arm, hand or finger mobility? I have little strength on right side and little mobility on left. Putting on a coat is horrible 😢

@@EquipMeOT I live in Northern Ireland and found a lot of help from watching your videos. I wasn't given any information on for instance not bending and keeping a 90° posture. You saved me from dislocating my hip! The physics and OT's were amazing and I am in no way casting aspersions on them. Thank you for making these videos!

How to make perogies

I try to tie my shoes and put my sock on. I am 1 month and like 4 days away but it hurts when I try to do it . I had the anterior approach should I be concerned?

I had THR last May. Glad I did it and everything is going well. If a movement hurt, I stopped doing it. I had PT for about 7 weeks postoperative and discussed all my concerns with them.

Definitely not, I have many clients who are 8-12 weeks before bending that far comfortably. I agree with the comment below that seeking some PT will help you regain the movements safely!

Rick Torres I saw a Dr here on youtube just recently who only does the anterior approach and he said that you will be able to tie your shoelaces on the same day as the surgery. The question did he lie?

It's been 3 years for me and I still can't tie my. Shoe I had the lateral approach done.

i had 2 replacements same side in a year and a half.still cant tie shoe.think we had same doc.

Easy, get slip ons.

It would have been very helpful if you showed on a diagram how the anterior & posterior approaches look like. Also, I wish you showed & demonstrated in a clearer way the elastic laces. I haven’t heard or seen them. You also were holding something brown in your right hand while holding a shoe horn in your left. You didn’t show or explain clearly. So it was totally useless! A couple of times I didn’t understand a couple words you said, because you mumbled them too fast. Overall the video has hardly any value, and I’m sorry for this. 🙁
