I wish I'd seen this before my hip replacement 4 weeks ago! I would have used the reacher to put on pants and have a better sense of how to use the sock aid. The shoe horn was really tough for me to use with my soft heeled shoes/slippers.

Everyone is different of course, but my recovery is going better than I expected. If you haven't bought a shower chair, a portable commode with the pot removed world just as well. My 1st couple of days were frustrating trying to remember what not to do, but if I just move slow, my body tells me not to do it. My fear was definitely way worse than recovery actually was. I'm on my way to my 1st post-op visit right now

I wear Keens which are primarily slip-on but have to be grabbed at the back. When I've had my hip flare up, I haven't had surgery yet, I use a hanger to grab the little pul piece and pull it into position. Just saying in case this helps someone else with their pull-on shoe that has a tab on the back of the heel.

For my cancer surgery las Jan 30, I wore my robe to the hospital. When I go in for my hip replacment I will wear the robe or dress I only wear at home. Told the nurse in Jan that I had to undress as soon as I got to the surgery center so why should I completely dress and then undress within an hour or so. Wearing my robe was more sensible and it looked like a dress under my winter coat. My daughter who took care of my things only had to put my bra and robe in my bag where I had packed the clothing to wear home.

  • @Emma-ey8cu

I have all of these tools. I just had a hip replacement. I used the sock aid and it was tough. Those compression socks are so tight that when u go to put ur foot in itu literally will be twisting and wiggling that bad side and cld possibly damage that new hip trying to get sock on. Taking them off is next to impossible. I use a reacher and u have to be extremely careful. Compression socks r awful. The two things i find u need more than any other is the reacher and a chair with two arms.

The soft sock aid can be folded smaller to make it easier for putting the sock on it 1-handed. Then you just hold both straps in 1 hand while threading and pulling. amzn.to/3vL3cmu

Hey Gerard, I know you posted this a while ago, but just in case you still need the info, you can use a dressing stick or other item like it to help push the clothing down off of your legs and feet. Some reachers have a little peg on them that can also help with that.

Similar question as MorePlease had. This would apply to men or women. I am incontinent and use depends. They are pretty snug to begin with, or they get saggy like the funny toddler photos! Plus, I can only go up one more size; I’m a big girl. My plan is to have some scissors & duct tape on the counter by the toilet. Cut the opposite side open like making a side seam. Pull up over surgical side first, then pull up the open sides as high as possible. Apply a piece of duct tape 6-8” long to the inside of the briefs, smooth side to the skin, like a waistband. Pull front & back as close together as possible. Fasten firmly to the ends of the duct tape. Stand up. Then apply a second piece of duct tape same length, on the outside of briefs, sticky side toward briefs and covering any sticky areas exposed from first piece. Since I would be standing, it would be easier to adjust the fit before putting the last piece on snugly. I have no idea if this would work. I thought you might have other suggestions. I also have the challenge of a large belly over a very low horizontal C-Section scar like a thick rope. The overhang can make it hard to pull up briefs on an easy day.

  • @EquipMeOT

Personally, I select based on the task. If you are picking up heavy things or pulling up pants I go 26” or shorter (heavier is too difficult to manage). You can use 32” if your doing light tasks with it, but I don’t love the folding ones because they are not as sturdy.

I’ve been working with period underwear for some recent clients in this situation! Heavy flow will require changing them but donning/doffing underwear is the same general process as pants!
