50 years ago, Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut. Their sophomore effort followed just a handful of months later -- taking them from nearly unknown session players to a hard rock powerhouse. But when the band shifted from their blues influence towards folk for Led Zeppelin III, a luke-warm response from fans and critics threatened their rise.
Their success was being attributed to hype and aggressive marketing campaigns. In protest, Zeppelin would move away from the standard -- if not necessary way of selling records. Their fourth album would be left untitled and the band’s name, absent from the cover. Instead, mysterious sigils appeared -- one for each member of the group. They would strip everything away in order to let the music speak for itself.
They would have to push their creative limits in order to progress -- experimenting with new production techniques and instruments. Guitarist Jimmy Page swore their fourth album would be their best. If it wasn’t, they’d give up and retire. What followed was one of the most iconic rock albums ever made. Setting Led Zeppelin on a path towards becoming legends of rock and roll.
-------------------------------
Led Zeppelin FAQ
Where was Led Zeppelin 4 recorded? Where was Led Zeppelin IV recorded?
Led Zeppelin's fourth album was recorded at Headley Grange in Hampshire, England.
When did Led Zeppelin 4 come out? What year did Led Zeppelin IV released?
November 8, 1971
What do the Led Zeppelin 4 symbols mean?
The feather of Ma’at, Egyptian goddess of justice and fairness encompassed within a circle. The emblem of a writer, belonged to none other than Robert Plant. The Borromean rings, depicting man, woman and child resided with John Bonham. A celtic knot portrayed a person both confident and competent was chosen by John Paul Jones. Finally, Zoso. Designed by Page himself, it wasn’t intended to be a word at all. It’s meaning remains a complete mystery.
Why was Led Zeppelin IV called zoso?
The band's name and title were left off the album. The only things left were the symbols the group created. Page's Zoso was the only one that appeared to form a word and it just stuck.
How many copies of Led Zeppelin 4 have been sold?
Led Zeppelin IV has sold over 23 millions copies in North America. With 37 million copies sold worldwide.
Is Led Zeppelin IV the best album ever?
That's for you to decide. It's arguably the group's best record.

The fact that Led Zeppelin 3 didn't have good reception is a damn shame

Yeah, I like 3 a lot. Probably more than I like 1 and 2--though 2 is a more powerful album. Yeah, they went a little deep in the folk tunes--but you can't really knock an album that birthed Immigrant Song and Since I've Been Loving You. And I like that they showed they didn't have to rely on volume and overdrive...

@@Ethan_Brant Why not Physical Graffiti? To me its just an easy #1. Its not often that double albums wouldnt benefit with a little trimming down (Beatles White album for example). PG doesnt have a weak link and it has such a sprawling array of styles and of course more songs than any other album. Its their high water mark creatively in my opinion too. If I could only ever listen to one ever again it would be PG. Hard to pick number #2 though. Either III, IV or HoTH.

The 1st time I heard Led Zeppelin was in 1969. We had a convenience store in the neighborhood and I believe I was only around 12 years old. They had a wire basket there that was full of 45 rpm records with holes melted through them. I'll never forget it living loving maid was on one side and whole lotta love on the other. They hit my generation of kids like a steamroller. I was already experimenting with the guitar. And what an influence they were. I still play guitar today and I'm 62. Thanks to all the members of Led Zeppelin for doing what they did. I also listen to them to this day. And will till the day I die.

Going to California!! Wow....still makes me tear up listening to the passion of them.....I remember listening to it hundreds of times in the 80s and still love it today
I’ve been a Zep fan for over 40 years and this was the best rockumentary yet. 🤟🏼

Great video! Very informative. Thank you!
Lots of details! Thanks
When I got his album I could just tell something was different about this than anything else I've heard. I just got a strange feeling of peace while listening to it.
Kashmir from Physical Graffiti. Hands down one of the best on that album.

I have said this many times before, and I will continue to say the greatest song by the greatest band, ever.
Excellent , excellent commentary coming from the biggest Zeppelin fan in the Midwest ...me ! Peace from Detroit.
Cool video bro. Appreciate your insights into the recording process.
My parents played this at nauseum when I was a child. I can sing and play every song of this album and is by far one of my favourite albums of all time. Xoxoxo

A decent job reporting on Led Zeppelin IV, Middle 8. Very enjoyable. However, it's common knowledge that the Gibson Twin Neck was purchased after the album's production, to perform Stairway to Heaven, live, with just the one guitar. It has been reported by Page, himself, the 12 String electric guitar parts were performed on a Fender XII.

Your editing is sick bro
Video man!! Thank you for posting!
If you plan on ever making another Led Zeppelin video, it would be cool so see how the double album physical graffiti came together. Also, it would be cool to hear you talk about the legendary live album The song remains the same
I love all their albums but the one that i love the most has gotta be houses of the holy
Terrific post and analysis! Pagey would be proud of you!
Middle 8 THAT was an excellent video. I watch a lot of videos and I am rarely impressed, well done!
Zoso is a sigil for Saturn that Page adapted, Google holds the wisdom of the ancients. Zep III is an excellent album.
Growing up we discussed Zeppelins greatest album many times... Zeppelin II from start to finish was #1

I found that record in my parents collection when I was 10 or 11. It was by far the best 1 my parents had and the first Zeppelin record I ever heard. I've been listening to it for 30 years now Have a good one
Good video bro! Keep up the good work, enjoying all of your videos!
I don’t know how I found this channel but I’m so glad I have!! Cheers bro
