On one side we have those saying they’re too similar to Led Zeppelin’s sound, that they’re boring, blatant rip-offs and have yet to bring anything new to the table. On the other side we have those who are happy to have a band reviving the hard rock sound of the 70s, bringing it to a new generation of listeners and into a market that’s oversaturated with R&B and hip hop.
Regardless of which side you sit on, Greta Van Fleet’s singles are quickly gaining them fans, see them climbing rock charts and have them selling out shows -- all of this and the band have yet to release a full debut record.
This video essay explores Greta Van Fleet’s recent rise in popularity, the band members, their EP Black Smoke Rising and their double EP From the Fires. I also reflect on bands of the past that have been tapped for sounding too much like Led Zeppelin, including: Rush, Billy Squier, Kingdom Come, Wolfmother and Rival Sons. But even Led Zeppelin have been known to steal lyrics and riffs from artists without crediting them.

I don't care that they sound similar to Led Zeppelin, what bugs me is that they keep saying their biggest influence is Aerosmith. Just own that you sound like Led Zeppelin and move on.

There's nothing wrong wit a young band sounding like zeppelin. I only speak for myself, but I'm so sick and tired of hip hop

Gee what a problem to have! These kids are true musicians. Not boring. That kid's voice is unreal and I got goosebumps listening to Heat Above. The guitar is awesome. Just wow.

It says something about a band when the primary "insult" from haters is that they sound too much like one of the greatest bands ever.

I just saw them 2 nights ago. I'm 59 years old and have seen The Rolling Stones, The Who, Ozzie, Pink Floyd, The Clash, Kiss, and many others live. Greta Van Fleet sounded better live and put on a better show than any live act I have seen.

For a band to be called "influential," we have to be OK with other bands being influenced by them. Copying your heroes is an essential part of developing your own style on any instrument, in any genre of music. According to jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, the process goes like this: "Imitate. Assimilate. Innovate."

When i first heard Highway Tune i was with my daughter and we both looked at each other like is this Led Zeppelin? And when we found out who they were we became fans and we even hit one of their concerts! I enjoy listening to them!

love it, Led ripped similarly blues melodies and riffs. Plenty of documentation... GVF has brilliantly revitalized a lingering energy that we still thirst for.

Well I love them.. and I appreciate that I can enjoy classic rock with a more modern sound and honestly with Heat Above I think they’re starting to come into their own. They’re so talented!
