-------------------------------
Making an album has never been easy for Radiohead.
After creating their most conceptually important release and one of the greatest albums of all time, they followed it up with Kid A in quite possibly the greatest left turn in music history. Their trajectory seemed to level out after Amnesiac. How couldn’t it? They had made creative leaps with each subsequent release -- pushing further appeared pointless, if not impossible. But they tried anyways. Hail to The Thief was angry, politically-charged and perhaps a bit overloaded with ideas.
It was the last album released in their six-album contract with EMI. And after completing their world tour in support of Thief, the band went on hiatus. They no longer had any contractual obligations to make new music -- and plenty of good reasons to quit Radiohead altogether…
But in 2007, with only 10 days notice they’d release their landmark record, In Rainbows. And give it away for free.

9:50 no, no, no. You've missed the point here. Lily Allen is absolutely correct to say that musicians and bands performing and releasing for free has the effect of devaluing music. Why pay for music when it's free? Nobody can deny this, we see it all around us nowadays. Radiohead didn't do that deliberately but it is true that only a secure and successful band could ever do this and have any success. The thing that sounds identical to the record labels is you, ironically, with your message that anybody can make it in this model if they just work hard and have good music. That's not the case. People were prepared to pay willingly for In Rainbows because it's Radiohead. Nobody will willingly pay for an album by Johnny Nothing and the Nomarks, no matter how mind-blowing the music is.

@James Schultz * Est.1982 man daily mail is for sure in my top 3 Radiohead songs. Listening to the basement version really unlocked TKOL for me. When I first heard it, thee regular version felt like an electronic Thom Yorke album and a slightly flat. but when they performed it live, it became so much bigger, every song acquired an amazing unique character, and each musician made himself present. It's amazing.

Just to add some thoughts to this thread, specifically regarding James & Pedro mentioning the basement sessions; there's something about all of the songs played 'From The Basement.' The Mix was incredibly on-point, meaning where every instrument sat frequency-wise in the overall mix added brightness yet also some crunchiness (Bass for example, and/or the punch of the drums) to the instruments, and while watching each member play their part, every instrument was audible & distinguishable on its own, yet sat perfectly in the mix as a whole. I prefer the from the basement versions of almost every song vs the studio/album versions specially for those reasons. And of course, not only was the mix on-point, of course Radiohead themselves were on-point and 'in the pocket' as well. Lastly, one of the reasons Radiohead is in my top 5 favorite bands of all time, is because they've never stagnated creatively; it's not that they "reinvented themselves" for each album, but they absolutely didn't try to recreate the sounds or vibes from a previous album. They've continued to move forward creatively & sonically every album, but as the video mentioned, the songs and albums are without question distinctly Radiohead. I think being able to make that statement for a band is few & far between, especially in the (current) age of recycled, resampled, remade, nauseous excessive radio play times that we live in. So for me, Radiohead haven't ever put out an album or song that I'd consider lackluster or don't enjoy listening to all the way through. And then of course, they always have 1, or 2, or several songs on each album that I enjoy so much I end up playing it on repeat for hours or days or weeks. Anyway. Great video! And great discussion guys! Cheers, .-H.B.

The thing about In Rainbows that makes it stand above other Radiohead albums for me is that I don’t feel the need to listen to it within a certain context (mood, setting, time of day, etc.) to understand or enjoy it. It’s accessible, immediate, visceral, emotional, passionate, vibrant, colorful, romantic, melodic. It doesn’t really depress or disturb me like some of their other records do at times. I actually get a warm, happy feeling from listening to it

@Antonio Trujillo Bandera I just don’t see how. If there’s a song that exemplifies the cover and vibe of the album, HoC is definitely one of them. Also seems to be one of the more accessible tracks when showing Radiohead to friends, especially those who can appreciate slower paced music. Videotape is the worst song for me; every other song has a melody that really gets to me in some capacity. HoC’s ambience and refrain undeniably being one of them, not to mention it’s the perfect calm breather between the faster paced Reckoner and Jigsaw.

One random day I read in the news that some band I didn't know had released an album that you could pay whatever you wanted to download it. I wanted to experiment if they were stupid enough to let anyone pay zero dollars to get it (my thought at the time), and voilà it worked. I clearly remember seeing the folder with all the songs in my old Dell laptop. I played it and the rest is history. Since the first beats of 15 Step I was hooked, and it opened the door to one of the most important bands in my life. In Rainbows became one of my favorite albums, I bought the physical version and over the next few years I bought all their albums, especially around the period when my father passed away. I have seen Radiohead live 4 times, once even having traveled overseas for the concert. Quite a journey that I couldn't have had if I didn't get that free download!

B sides is where you can find some really true gems that never made it to album, no matter the artist. Some of my definitive favourites are b-sides. I think “like spinning plates” has a b side version that is so much better that the one that actually found the way to the album. Also another I remember off the top of my head that is completely off topic is “Quiet Steam” by Peter Gabriel. I am not particularly fan of him, but that version is something to give a try. Also some other golden nuggets in my head, but just seems out of reach in my brain at the moment. I am getting old lol.

Jigsaw Falling Into Place has one of the best builds in any song I've heard. There's maybe one moment you notice a jump in intensity (when Thom goes up a key) but apart from that it's this slow, methodical build of every piece until the whole thing blooms. It's literally like a jigsaw puzzle - you don't notice the individual pieces going in, but by the end you somehow have this beautiful, complete work of art. Honestly one of the few songs I consider perfect.
