Kirk is an amazing, but extremely lazy, guitarist. Listening to Metallica now it feels pretty clear he was always trying to just cruise by on his raw talent rather than actually give a fuck on his writing the way guys like Randy or Martie would. He was amazing 30 years ago. Now, he's the laziest guitarist ever. All of his new solos on the 2 most recent albums sound totally uninspired. Heck, you can switch them around. Him only using the Minor Pentatonic scale isn't even the issue. It's the fact that he's just repeating himself, and that it's obvious how he went into the studio and recorded the most basic licks he could remember. Ffs, look up basic Minor Pentatonic licks on Google. THAT IS PRECISELY what he keeps playing, just at high speeds and with a Wah pedal. Look at Eric Johnson, in comparison, who absolutely knows how to make that (overused) scale sing. Kirk is so lazy. He's no longer "really good". He's mediocre now.

At least the one on the Harley Benton has chops. I know a few guitarists who are poor but could play circles around Kork Dammet

Mate, Alex Scholnick of Testament is doing far better than him. They were both taught by Joe Satriani, both from same area and played for thrash metal bands

That’s so true, I remember my dad saying his solos weren’t particularly great or well structured to me when I was younger, it was safe to say I felt outraged. Listening to him play now I’m older (and after improving my guitar playing) it only made me realise how right my dad was. The guy just tremolo picks the same pattern and moves it up and down the same string.

I got into an argument with someone who thought Kirk was insanely better than Mustaine. Lol. Like Kirk is good, no doubt but Mustaine plays all over the place and Kirk kinda sits in the same pocket for his songs. The guy didn't like that. Kirk is more controlled, Mustaine is just playing fast all over with no musicality or anything ... Guy was confused

@UCAHyRZgv98v82nmcIifQ2Qg bro, Dave wrote the majority of the music in his discography. The drums, the rhythm, lead. He can play it all on guitar, no doubt. But Dave has a better command of all the tools required to play his instrument. The only difference being that Kirk can do and does more radio/ ear friendly stuff and Dave kinda needs a bit more of an advanced ear to truly appreciate his playing and song writing. I started on Metallica, love them. Didn't get into Deth until after years. Love Deth, so good. But Mustaine was the leading force. I play guitar. Playing Metallica...a lot of kirks stuff is played the same. Variations on a theme, is what classical music might call it. Dave is all over the fret board. Playing rhythm and solos that are unique. Kirk kind of sounds the sound no matter what. Idk how to describe it
