How K-On's Coming-of-Age Story Breaks Moe Convention

Фильм және анимация

Today, under the scope, I settle once and for all that K-On is more than cute girls doing cute things. Few series are more polarizing than K-On, with one side decrying it for ruining anime while others praise it for a charming, moving story about the importance of friendship framed through a circle of friends and a light music club. As usual, all media in the video belongs to the respective copyright holders and is protected under US copyright law for fair use.

I normally can't stand the slice of life genre, but I love K-On! As a fan of metal, I was really apprehensive about the series, but the music just blew me away. The riffs, the solos, the vocals are all top-notch. Yoko Hiksaka's voice as Mio is fantastic, and the contrast between her and Aki Toyosaki's (Yui) more cutesy voice works really well. The keyboards are so insanely good to the point that I think all bands need to have a keyboardist now. Azu-nyan's and Yui's dual guitar harmonization is god-tier, and their tone is so clean and orgasmic. Their songs are catchy and yet at the same time speak to the soul and I can headbang the fuck out of anything they play. Tenshi ni Fureta Yo! is one of the most emotional moments in all of anime. This is not those lame melodrama shows that shove the "sad" moments in your face and try to manipulate your feelings. This is the type of show which is more subtle and the main point of the show isn't to make you cry but you do so because of your attachment to the characters. I sat throw most of the show with the silliest grin on my face and an explosion of happiness in my heart. This is one of the shows that allow you to forget how shitty life is for a brief moment. If HTT was a real band, I'll be a fanboy following on them on tour around the world.

@@KasbashPlays Nah I don't really like K-on even after watching this video. To me it's hard to see the appeal in the show as the characters aren't really like what this video's describing in practice, and I was quite surprised to find out how much people love K-on when I think it's very mediocre. I even talked about it with my friends and pretty much all of them asked me why I would even subject myself to it lol. I really don't see the personality in any of these characters, and there really isn't any substance to speak of; it really is just a moe show. The messages mentioned in this video 100% exist and are easily defined, but since the show itself is pretty bad it's just an empty message. The show may be telling me to live life to the fullest with my friends or whatever, but a show can't be called good just because it's message is something people can agree with. This is just my opinion, but the show is far too 1-dimensional for me to really think about it in the greater scope of my life.

K-ON! struck a chord with me because I was Yui back in '95 when I became an exchange student at a all-girl school in Japan. I knew no-one in Japan except my host family, I had no friends and only had what I read in books and magazines to educate me about the finer points of Japanese culture before going to Tokyo. I was petrified that people would just write me off as that "weird foreign girl who reads books and doesn't talk to anyone". That was until I met the president of the "Otaku" club who invited me to join her club and that club was the making of me as for the first time in my life I met people who have the same hobbies and interests as me. I never liked school until I became an exchange student to the point that I was holding back tears at my graduation. I love studying in Japan so much that I ended up doing six years at Tokyo University studying for a Masters Degree. I cried when I travelled back to the US after spending 9 years in Tokyo but my time in Japan taught me that the only constant in life is change. Great video UTS, nice to see someone understands all art has merit and a show that most people wrote off as "moe-blob rubbish" has a message about growing up and life in general that everyone can appreciate and take something away from whether they're 16 or 60.

I want to add to Azunyan's character. I think the most important part about Azunyan is that she represents the fans of K-On. Azunyan is us, the fans, wanting to be part of the group, to be playing in the band, going on those trips. And when they performed 'Tenshi ni Fureta Yo,' it was for Azunyan aka us the fans.

Not only that, the show hits some deep themes a lot of people go through life. Being a little sister or brother, trying to catch up to your older siblings but not being able to only because of the fact they are older, or having upperclassmen friend knowing they are going to go away-it’s bittersweet, knowing especially you’re all transitioning to adulthood and change. It’s essential knowing that in life, and dear Lord, K-On makes me tear up always.

I love K-ON, it captured my high school experience better than any other show I've ever seen. In similar shows I just see tons of stuff that I was told would happen that never did, there was no romantic drama, no big fights, no one lit the school on fire. It was spent in a classroom with a small group of friends and we just kinda hung out, and K-ON just captures that perfectly. Another thing that sets it apart that goes unnoticed is just how fantastically directed and composed K-ON is, the team behind K-ON are masters of their craft and really don't get enough credit. Since you're a K-ON fan I assume you've seen Digibro's fantastic thesis on K-ON but I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't understand the love for this show.

I'm 43 and I just discovered K-on about a week and a half ago. I've since gone through it all and the feelings that it inspired in me haven't left yet. Mainly because I ended up getting hooked on the music. I've always been a rock fan, it's just been that way since I was a kid listening to my dad's music, then growing up and evolving my musical tastes. The music I really love is music that has meaning and passion and that is what I find here in K-on. Whoever wrote these songs, even the silly ones, did it with a lot of heart. As I watched the show, because it was about the relationship between these girls seemed to give every song even more meaning. It's like every note that rings out comes from your heart strings. The only way I could really sum up my feelings is to say that the creators of K-on plucked something divine and magical and pure out of the ether and somehow managed to keep it intact as it was planned and executed. It's a gift. I intend on cherishing it.

Fantastic video. Really gets at the heart of what I adore about the show. Hell, just you DESCRIBING that scene from episode 20 was enough to get my waterworks flowing. One minor criticism I want to mention though, is that I'm not sure I like the minute and a half of clips from the show with Fuwa Fuwa Time playing. I think your point that a lot of the show is cute girls doing cute things is illustrated well enough in the rest of the video, so it feels like that could've been cut. Or maybe have the music fade to around -25 or -30 Db and give a bit of commentary over top of those clips, sort of reiterating the point. Still, fantastic video. I'm gonna go check out the rest of your stuff.

Thanks, glad you liked it! The clips playing to Fuwa Fuwa Time were intended to juxtapose the montage at the end to U&I. The first uses nothing but clips of cute, moe moments from every episode (i.e. what people think K-On is), while the ending uses emotional, meaningful moments from every episode (what K-On really is).

Syy Yea that's fair. I chose to end it where I did only because that was the first real stopping point in the song, but I probably could've worked with it a bit. The longer use works more in the end because you can always just stop watching at that point, but at the start I see what you mean.

For me, this video was absolutely perfect. You Express my love for K-On! flawlessly and showcase not only Naoko Yamada's Brilliance as a Director, but Kyoto Animation's Style as a whole - Their ability to so effectively create and develop their shows' characters and plot solely through the animation is what makes them my favourite anime company - and shows such as K-On!, Clannad, Sound! Euphonium, Hyouka, Tamako Love Story, The Disappearance (And Melancholy) of Haruhi Suzumiya, Kanon and Nichijou among others are perfect examples of their strengths as a studio. Once again, for me, this video was perfect, just like K-On!

K-On is the show that really hooked me on anime. It was a bit of a struggle to make it through the first season at times (the Moe kept it firmly in guilty pleasure territory for a while) but the characters (and the music) kept me interested and the ending of season one coupled with the first scene in season two hooked me for the rest of the ride. I think you really hit on why the series works so well: beyond the "cute girls doing cute things" factor it's a show that is firmly about the characters and how their lives have changed as a result of the club and each other both in the writing and in the "KyoAni touches" in the art and animation department you've mentioned in a few of your videos. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone (it's character focus can make the show feel like its glacially paced if you don't write it off as completely episodic before the plot picks up), but for anyone that gravitates towards character-focused shows like I do it's well worth the watch. Great video, man (and nice editing)! Keep up the good work and here's hoping this doesn't get hit with copyright strikes.

At first when I saw this anime on TV back on 2010, i taught it was just some boring Disney-sing-along-show. Now 7 years later when I watched the whole series. I realized, it was not, it was better than that, from basic guitars, to different groups of music, I've learned a lot from K-on, and I was also attached to the characters, feeling like they're real life friends, and.. For the first time, I never felt so much emotion towards these characters before. That other show series never got to capture. (Forgive me for my bad English)

Them singing their song to azusa was tear jerking. I loved this anime so much. Never wanted it to end, everything about it was perfect. And also I want to add even though this video is many years old now. What Scope said about it being a show about finding the place and the people you are comfortable with and enjoying the moment you have with them is very true. I watched this show for the first time in 2010, a year after the first season aired and a few months before the 2nd season came out. I was in 5th grade and having to watch it as it goes to the end really helped me start out my highschool life. I thank this show for teaching me to choose the people that I spent my highschool life with. We just graduated college but we're all still homies. I hope you guys watch this show if you haven't yet.

What got me, as an adult male, about this show from the start is that it was so refreshing to see an anime about young girls where they weren't exploited or awkwardly sexualized. Not even your obligatory walking in on someone getting out of the shower or stylized beach bikinis, etc. Also what I liked about the show Minami-Ke. There weren't even any male characters. And for an Asian person like myself whose parents came from a social and scholastic environment more like that than here in the US, it was a bit of a glimpse into that (although obviously times have changed considerably). I liked that I could just watch these cute characters be funny and endearing and sincere. And the music was shockingly good. In fact, if I had daughters I'd want them to have friends and experiences just like these. There are moments that genuinely make you laugh like you would in real life. Especially when Yui loses her voice for the big show...I could just imagine being one of their parents and putting my hands to my face in horror, but at the same time nearly peeing myself laughing. Everything felt like it came from a place that's real, and again, not exploiting youth or dumbing it down, but celebrating it from the heart. Also, my mother had passed a few years ago, and I could see her as the Azusa character, so that chokes me up a bit too. Just look at the place it has in people's lives ten years after it aired. Just like friends you grew up with in real life.

I was like reading some YT comments on another vid while watching season 2. They said that they cried like crazy and they said that they don't want them to go and was like they cried cuz the series ended. And I was like... "It aint that dramatic right" and then Episode 20 of season 2 came and I was like "Ohhh please don't go T^T" That moment realizing that they'll graduate and leave Azusa behind was so heart breaking. As a whole, this series made me immerse in its world, I felt like I saw them with my own eyes and not through the screen or through the video. I felt like I was part of its world. And its the first time I felt that way. Taking into account that I've been watching anime for almost 7 years now. K-ON really has a special place in my heart :3

I find the argument that there's no conflict in K-On really odd. There's loads of conflict, it's just within each character instead of between them. Yui is in constant conflict with her tendency to lose focus and procrastinate, which risks making her let her friends down. Ritsu is in conflict with her tendency to run away from responsibility and her habit of showing her friends she loves them by teasing and annoying them, while actually they're the most important thing in her life by far. Mio is in conflict with her shyness and anxiety which holds her back from her huge potential. Mugi is in very quiet conflict with her tendency to feel like she's a guest or a fifth wheel in the group, and that she has to deserve to be part of the group by being unfailingly kind and generous. And Azunyan is heavily conflicted between her drive to work hard and her appreciation for the things she likes about her slacker senpais. I think everyone can recognize some of themselves in these conflicts, that's what makes K-On great.

Im in high school right now, and the looming fear of graduation is coming ever closer. This show had so many moments that had me relating to it on another level, like going to a music concert with my friends, or traveling to another city. That helped cement my connection to this show and its characters so when the end finally came, I was the most emotional and teary Ive ever been in the 4 years ive been watching anime. Watching these characters- no, these people grow and do things ive done, together, with each other as friends... It hit so close to home and now i dont think i can ever put down this show. I dont think I'll ever forget it. This is going to stick with me forever and ever.

I rarely cry from an anime, not even rezero, but it has made me get eye watery but not break down, but k-on made me break down in a different way, it made me realize that I’m going to have to leave some things behind and go forward, even though I just started my junior year in high school 2020 I can already see what I’m going to have to face soon, idk if I’m ready for it but when it comes I’ll be prepared, k-on really just brings the light to my body, either I was silently enjoying the show with a smile on my face, laughing at funny scenes, or crying to things that can relate to many people. I know some of us have and have not graduated yet, I haven’t but we all can see what’s coming up ahead. K-on will now always remain a top tier anime in my mind for bringing things that i can relate to now or eventually, all I know is im going to have to let go and find my way again, this was a really touching anime and will never leave my heart. ❤️❤️❤️ -Tristan C. 2020

I just discovered this Anime a couple weeks ago and have just finished watching it today. For me it's very heart warming and just what i need to help cope while i'm stuck at home.

This anime is so great. Because of this anime, i have a motivation to play a guitar Thanks to Yui. Also the composition of their songs are so great that i play all of their music almost 3months. This is the best

Many people get the whole "be yourself" thing wrong. This is why the show is relatable as everyone in the show is comfortable enough to show their positive weirdness to each other which is what you do around people you're comfortable with. You see how each character has their own weirdness. Negative weirdness is things that are more sexual or unhygienic in nature, while positive weirdness is more along the lines of what you see from the characters in the show. Like how a drink from mugi made sawako suddenly get the energy to carry the larger fish tank in her car from mugi's house to the school. Then when some of the bigger tank was in the sun, ritsu solved it by just putting a black piece of paper over the one square of the window that had the tank be in the sunlight. Another example is for the year book photo yui was caring so much about her hair style, she accidentally made it worse, and she tried everything she could to get sawako to change it, yet it didn't happen. This is what I mean by positive weirdness, in that in front of the people you're genuinely comfortable with, you're not always trying to look the best or be the best at problem solving, or always look mature and confident with everything you do. Sometimes they make mistakes, sometimes they make themselves look silly.

Wow, this is the best edited video I've seen from you yet. Feels like you put in a little extra into making this. Even nailed it with a signature Mio song at the end.

Honestly, the ending part of the video almost made me cry- You put U&I and We touched an Angel! (Tenshi Ni Furetayo!) into the video [my favourite songs from the show], that made me really happy cause the AMV you made was their journey- K-On is honestly my favourite anime, and you made me love it more
