Ten Years Later: Some Thoughts on Nichijou

Ойын-сауық

According to Keiichi, today is also the 15th anniversary of the manga. Ain't that something?
On April 3rd, 2011, Keiichi Arawi's Nichijou came to Japanese televisions for the first time. Now, a decade later, I made a video of significantly lesser quality to talk about why it's my favorite anime.
I think it is quite noticeable that this video was rushed to meet the April 3rd deadline. I probably should have either just scrapped the anniversary idea to give myself more time to work on it or started editing it together sooner. The video recording quality is inconsistent (I can see the watermark too) and my punishment for not having a DVD player on my laptop. I think having to insert footnotes rather than just re-record my lines is also sloppy, but I was running out of time when I spotted most of the errors. I hope you're able to enjoy it despite its faults, and that you'll give Nichijou a try.
This video doesn't cover the manga, though for what it is worth its pretty similar to the anime. The manga is chronologically and tonally a bit different than the anime, and the manga continued for several years after the anime's conclusion, but for the most part I think it captures the same spirit as the comic.
And yeah, this video uses the subbed version. Or a subbed version. An English dub of Nichijou by Funimation does exist, but I elected not to use it. I've never seen the dub in full, but from what I have seen, it seems ok. It can't really replace the voices I've come to know for the characters through the original audio though. It also kind of just comes down to my incomptenence. I couldn't record this off of my DVD, so it had to be off of a website, and they don't use the dub. Most Nichijou clips online will be of the sub, as the dub has only existed since 2019. I don't wanna get into the whole spheel that is Nichijou's licensing history though.
I don't really know what else I can say. Nichijou is really important to me, and I think the best way to experience it is to go out and watch it or read it yourself and see what you get from it. I'll leave some links below that might help with that.
Oh, and make sure to read CITY as well! It's a blast.

The relation between Nano and Hakase is so wholesomely weird. Usually Nano acts as the grown-up, the mother figure but when it relates to Nano itself, her gadgets, her key, her being allowed to go to high school, suddenly the dynamic swaps and Hakase becomes the parent. The scene where Nano gets her school uniform makes me choke up everytime. She's so pure!

Hey, I just wanted to quickly say how amazing this video is. As someone who genuinely loves Nichijou, it’s always so hard to explain to people what about it makes me want to keep watching it and talking about it over and over again. There’s always something I can’t fully explain or ways of wording it that could always be better. Even recently after making my own Nichijou related video retrospective, I can’t help but feel like this does a better job at voicing the main appeal of the series in 15 minutes that I couldn’t do in 2 hours. With that being said, I can tell you put a lot of work into this and your passion bleeds through it all. It’s something I always love to see in the videos I watch and it’s rare to see it as genuine as this. Keep up the good work!

It warms my heart to know the video resonated with you. This video was rushed to meet the April 3rd anniversary, and I was worried that in addition to not being able to say everything I wanted, the lack of polish would do a disservice to a show that has tremendous meaning to me. To hear from people like you in the comments that it helps put feelings to words despite its flaws makes me smile. When I read that you made your own Nichijou video, I decided to take a peek at your channel out of curiousity. I must admit; It wasn't really my vibe. I'm actually kind of a boring person, so that's more of a fault on me than you. I was quite impressed by your editing, though, particualrily on the "NichiFaithJouMore" one! I couldn't even begin to figure out how to integrate those clips with the OP like that. I also saw that you made some music! ...It's also a bit out there for me. I play some instruments and have made a few bad MIDI tracks in the past, so I can sympathize and appreciate the effort there too. Even though your stuff isn't really my style, I can see you have talent, and I hope you continue pursuing creative activities. I think you have a lot going for you, and I hope you keep up the good work as well.

Thanks! That means a lot and yeah, this is 100% worth the support. Just so you know, when I meant my own Nichijou video, it wasn't any of the ones on my channel. I made a 2 hour long retrospective on a channel called Marcosatsu (it's a collaborative channel I edit for). The video is called History Of Nichijou if you're interested. The other ones were more me screwing around with friends as opposed to an actual celebration of the series. Either way, the reply means a lot and I hope to see what's in store for your channel in the future!

@@idontgetcha I checked out that two hour video on Marcosatsu. It's quite the beast! It must have taken some doing from all of you guys. You should be proud! Working for five months on anything seems like an unfathomable hurdle for me, so you have my kudos for that dedication. And you have overlap with the MAD/YPTMV world too! I've always had respect for those videos, the editing and music knowledge needed to make those is wild, even if they don't get much attention. MADs were what actually introduced me to Nichijou in the first place. Honestly, I think I'm a bit jealous of you. Still, I think this video and the one ya'll made were produced under different circumstances and by different people, albeit with the same goal in mind, so it my not be fair to compare them. Or at least that's what I'll tell myself to keep my ego from bruising. It was really nice hearing from you! Like I said before, I hope you continue to work at this stuff. Nano and Mio both. Actually, all of them, to a degree. But for example much of Nichijou is about Nano trying to hide being a robot (feature she can't change, born with) and Mio trying to hide that she draws Manga (feature of her personality that she's passionate about and could change, but doesn't want to).

Greatness of the series aside, there's something... Weird, that I've felt with Nichijou. It's like the ultimate voyeuristic experience. Starting from the hidden camera transitions to the various sky high angle shots, to stuff like Helvetica Standard that... Man it's so weird. It's like... There's something beneath. It could be an ulterior joke or something, but it's like we're observing a little world, like a doll house from the eyes of God or something, and maybe that's the only way you can witness the real message of this anime. There's something absurdly abnormal beyond all of this. We're watching life, but it's like we are hidden observers. I think this idea is even more clear with the ending montage for the second season, where we see the entire town from above. And also, the classical music soundtrack, the soundtrack! It's like it's used as a parody for cinema d'auteur in contrast of a delirious animation, but ultimately perfectly fits with some of the deepest scenes of the anime. It's like they're joking around, but they're always ready to deliver a meaningful message. So obviously is a comedy, but the melancholic feeling is always there, always. And you feel like the soundtrack it's something that the supreme observer decided to put there. In a certain sense, it's like all the silliness from the perspective of this supreme observer is melancholic in the first place, he observes the characters play around and he feels nostalgic. This uber-analysis aside, the great message of this anime is that life is a sequence of miracles, and miracles exist. It's very funny, and also very beautiful. Nichijou is a tribute to the beauty of life.

There are very few anime that can capture this ineffable feeling you are describing. Windy Tales, Girl's Last Tour, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou: Quiet Country Cafe, Tatami Galaxy, and Mushishi all manage to create their own unique flavors of that feeling and are worthwhile experiences. FLCL manages to pull it off in a more manic and frenetic manner although it hits quite differently from the others I've mentioned.

This is a perfect encapsulation of why I love this show so much. In 2015 I was recovering from some terrible stuff, feeling kind of aimless after an existential/identity crisis in 2013. Some classmate randomly recommended Nichijou to me, I don't even know why. But I started watching some scenes on KZread, and since I was going through a deep *deep* Digimon rabbit hole to the point I was rotating the show in my mind so I wouldn't think about anything else, I decided to actually give Nichijou a try. And it just clicked. It was like the final piece that made everything make sense. I suddenly became able to appreciate life in its mundanity, in its weird ways, in its absurdity. Nichijou immediately became an element in how I write scenes, especially comedy rooted in slice of life. I realized just how Extremely Online I had been for two years, and even though I would still go back to those habits now and then, Nichijou was the final piece that allowed me to find life exciting again, after a long time feeling like I was just "faking it". This is why I recommend it so much, not just because of the memes, not even just the humor, but because it literally helped me realize how precious daily life is and I want everyone to understand that.

There's not much to add to the video, but I'd like to put my grain of sand to the concept. It's been a number of years since I watched the series, and my life has changed since then, but back when I sat through the whole series with two of my friends, I remember having many connections with different people. I lived my last years as a teenager partly in the middle of an, at the time, intoxicating social turmoil. Meeting so many interesting people, learning about their lives and gradually discovering how many kinds of individuals there are with different experiences, and an everyday as complex as any I may have, was one of my most pleasurable experiences those days. The amount of characters the series introduces, most of which reveal only a side of their self and leave you with questions about the rest, living room for the imagination (the series lived so rent free on my head I wrote and drew my only two completed one-shots to date focusing on some of their side-characters) gave me at the time the impression I was being showed the inherent intricacy and chaos of a multi-layered "everyday" life where many individuals coexist in the same spaces, rather than the "main characters" and "side characters" narrative that I subconsciously resort to all the time.

I also first watched the show just entering high school, and I think that had a pretty major impact on how I related to the characters and the environment they existed in; I think maybe if I saw it for the first time now it wouldn't have quite the same resonance as it did back then. Something on the long list of things I didn't mention for time and because I'm lazy is that the show doesn't really feel like it has a main character and is more of an ensemble piece, and that made me think about what you wrote here about the characters being a complex amalgamation of different and unique lives all with their own interesting circumstances colliding in one area, one show, one life. I think it's really great that this show had an impact on you, and I'm glad you took the time to comment on my video.

Nichijou is incredibly unique to me and i can't find any other anime like it. That's really all it takes for an anime to make it to the very top of my lists, when it's really good and i can't find any other anime that makes me feel the same way. Like One Piece, Gintama, and Fruits basket. The feeling that all these animes give me is one that i can't describe and can't find anywhere else. Yes there's other animes that are amazing but sometimes it just doesn't hit as hard as i need it to

I only found out about this from the "Smoke Weed errday meme" when it was gaining traction. Just from that joke OP, I was curious to see what it was about, what was to ensue was my horrible fondness for the Slice of Life anime genre. Everything you mention about Nichijou I agree fully with and that's what makes this show so endearing, this is comfort viewing for me, if i'm feeling crap I put this on and suddenly things don't feel so bad. Though you don't mention the sound design, I feel this is what makes it that much better, it's just incredibly comforting to watch.

The editing in this video is on point. Every clip shown holds relevance to what's being discussed. Also, what you say at 4:26 is the most accurate description of Helvetica Standard yet. Nichijou holds a special place in my collection (that being the only place in my collection) due to it's perfect blend of comedy, animation, and pure unadulterated wholesomeness. The genius edit at 5:25 is way funnier than it has any right to be.

Well, what's curious about it is that the gag originally appears in the manga, which means a conscious decision had to be made to re-adapt and contact Snickers for copyright purposes for the sake of the joke, which seems especially odd for what is a really out of place product placement, so to me the origin of this flagrant display of branding is mysterious.

I'm actually crying. I have absolutely nothing to add to what this video said. So maybe I'll just add my own experience instead ? Ever since I was a child, I've been terrified of death and the fact I'm gonna die one day. When I turned 15 I had my first major crisis of clinical depression because of that. Though it had mostly subsided by the time I watched Nichijou, I still had a pretty bleak approach to life and thought nothing much of the passing days, seeing no worth in them at all. And then...there was this show. 26 episodes of pure, unhinged absurdity on every conceivable level. And what better way to describe our ordinary lives than with absurdity ? Nichijou made me happy to live again. It is the dearest anime to my heart for that reason, and as with you, its impact on me can never be overstated. So when I clicked on this video, I was very impatient to hear your point of view. But by the time it ended, tears were welling up because you didn't just _remind_ me why I love the show - you made me feel the way I did when I watched it for the first time, a way that I've never felt again since. How can I thank you enough ? I don't know. Perhaps by asking you to please, if you want to, feel absolutely free to do "five hours of gushing over the metaphorical intricacies of scenes like this". Please. I'm ready to help write the scripts, actually. I'm ready to do everything to put into words what this anime really is - not just "funny random" comedy, but so, so much more - a portrayal of human life itself.

I appreciate you taking the time out to share your story. I have received many comments like yours on this video and what has always interested me about Nichijou is how it has the ability to resonate with people so deeply despite it's initial appearance. That is to say, at it's core, Nichijou is a very silly show about cute high school girls performing vignettes that don't go anywhere, but is filled with thematic and heart, so the emotion flows through the episodes regardless. What is wonderful about art is that it can convey thoughts and feelings not even imaginable through words. We never really know what's going to impact us in a meaningful way, what life is going to throw at us, but I suppose that's what makes it fun. "It's like baseball." I've also dealt with clinical depression and a fear of my inevitable end for most of my adult life. I grew up with Autism and tried to embrace being kind of a "freak" for attention but ultimately only succeeded in further isolating myself from my peers. Nichijou's character's often felt like the things I wanted to be; funny and optimistic like Yuuko, normal and artistic like Mio, cool and quiet like Mai, but I think in truth I was Nano; meek, shy, a bit odd, but just looking for companionship. It gave me hope that one day I could find my tribe too. The first time I saw the show when I first started high school, I deeply related to the characters who were roughly my age, and it cracked open a heart I thought cold and dead for a long time. Things aren't perfect now, but at least now when I feel depressed I feel sad, as opposed to feeling nothing at all. I hope you're feeling better now, and that you know that you are not alone. In regards to making anything more videos on the subject, consider it highly unlikely. I have become somewhat disillusioned with the prospect of making content for the foreseeable future. Many works of media I've played or viewed in my life, Nichijou among them, have inspired me to pursue of a goal of creating something that can be both fun and deeply meaningful to an audience. Something that can be both funny and enjoyable while also being thought-provoking and emotionally challenging. What I have done so far is create some very lackluster video essays and some painfully unfunny home video skits with decades old equipment. Having investigated my motivations for such creations I have come to the conclusion that I may have been chasing easy viewership and that ten years in is a little late to realize you don't especially like video editing. Thusly, I think if I were to make any videos in the future it would be important for them to be important to me. This video is a rush job, and to me the cut corners are very apparent, but perhaps it is not so to the average viewer. I was trying to push it out to meet the deadline of the show's tenth anniversary. I think it not being five hours of gushing is for the best though; what I said in the intro was true, I've tried making longer videos and they indeed never got done because they were too much work. So having this one, concise labor of love able to come out is perhaps all that I need. I appreciate your offer though. I'll think of you if someone gets black-out drunk and decides to fund a CITY anime. Sorry if that was a lot, especially about petty content creator stuff no one is really interested in. I don't get many chances to talk genuinely on the internet. Again, I appreciate your comment. Best of luck to you, friend.

I sincerely am flattered that I could prompt you to speak unfiltered and, frankly, I hope it made your day better. I appreciate you opening up like this. Though we don't know each other, I sympathize greatly with everything you say. Not only because we've had similar struggles (dealing with autism and trying to belong but only becoming more of a goof, chasing attention through these means, trying to create something and never having it done...), but because this is the perfect setting to sympathize over the whole of the human condition. This is "ordinary life", after all. I don't mind that you don't want to do videos anymore. I was expressing the fact that I would wholly be behind you if all that stopped you was making too long a video and that people wouldn't be interested. But I certainly sympathize with not liking video editing too. I haven't read CITY, though. How is it ? Once again - thank _you_. For this video, and for expressing yourself so openly. @@blara2401 I appreciate your comments. CITY definitely reads like Keiichi wrote it. In many regards it feels like another Nichijou, so it does not surprise me that he eventually decided to restart the series. In general it feels a lot like the later manga issues of Nichijou (the ones the anime missed) where Keiichi has said most of the important sentimental stuff he wanted to say and is largely focused on his abstract humor. It makes me smile, but it may be disappointing if you're looking for the really wholesome stuff you might find in Nichijou. However, it can be interesting to see both how far he's willing to take his abstractions now that he doesn't feel the need to have a central message and how his work in CITY leads into his future projects. Given the low sales numbers it's something of a miracle it ever got an English release at all; something of a quirk of the show's weird licensing history and being tossed around over the years.
