@@JerrytheJdude, it's just an expression on how much they want a K-ON themed rhythm game. Don't be such an uesugi on people. And as the matter of fact, I do too but doubt that it'll happen any time soon. The anime was aired during the early 2000s so I don't think anyone's milking the anime anymore this time around.

There's a secret item you unlock by clearing a song with full combo. It activates hell mode in each song which gives you a whole new chart with a higher difficulty. It's even more fun then. I love how this game emulates playing different instruments, it's pretty unique.

the "judgement line moving with the music" is actually a pretty common subgenre of rhythm game, the most well known one is prolly Cytus on mobile, or DJMAX Technika on the arcade/mobile. it's indeed quite daunting if you're used to playing VSRGs (vertical scrolling rhythm game), but you'll get used to it pretty quickly.

Man, me from 2012 played the PS3 version to death. K-on! was my favourite anime back then and I've always loved rhythm games, so I imported the PS3 version from eBay. Didn't even care that I couldn't understand the menus, or the cutscenes. I could figure out enough to enjoy the game and unlock costumes. I also never knew about the cinematic mode until now.

I'm a massive K-ON fan. I watched the anime around 10x, learned all the songs on the guitar and even got to the point of traveling to Japan and visiting every place that served as background for the series. The scenery is mainly from Kyoto (there's an episode the characters travel to Kyoto, but in actuality they were there all along), but the school is based on an old building at Toyosato town. That school is something like the K-ON Mecca, with lots of stuff the fans brought. You can see the corridors, the staircases with the rabbit and turtle statures, the classrooms, the club room. Everything is exactly like in the anime. There's also a little souvenir shop managed by a very nice lady that even offered me some coffee when I told I was a brazilian. With that being said, I also got the chance to find a second-hand copy of that PSP game at some shop and my totally unbiased opinion about the gameplay is that it is very, very bad. (read the manga, btw. they go to college.)

great video, ive literally never heard of this game in my life so thanks for introducing it! honestly with the rhythm game section i think it just comes down to lack of experience, like there's definitely a number of rhythm games out there without static hit positions (cytus, phigros, djmax technika, etc) so it seems like mostly a nonissue once you get used to it, the staff moving around the screen is a bit meh but i kinda like it as a visual gimmick. tbh the charts are so simple anyway (at least from what you show in the video) that i think making the gameplay have more visually distracting elements to make up for that lack of difficulty is fine. ofc, its all preference so i understand why you might think its unnecessary but im still diagnosing you with skill issue :tf:

  • @Totaraum

This was a good review and pretty informative. I learned some new stuff today. And yeah, I'd say a 6/10 is about right. Regarding your point about the characters being lifeless, that was something I noticed right away. It felt especially noticeable when you were going through the dress-up mechanic actually. It was also jarring to see they had a version of the original ending music video with Azusa in it, which is all I've ever wanted in this life, only for them to not have the amazing outfits from that music video and to look devoid of emotion. And since you brought the animations (or lack thereof) up, I can't unsee it. Although I'm more forgiving of that. The mischaracterization is something I'm less forgiving of. That's pretty disappointing. These are actually some really deep and complex characters who best shine when you can see the nuances of their personalities and dynamics rise to the surface. And it's especially strange given, as you said, the game clearly has love for the source material poured into it. I can tell the developers were fans of the show. So I'm not sure how they got the characters so wrong. I get the lack of expressiveness and animation, as that's its own thing, but the characterization is just about being faithful or not. Regardless of that, none of this stuff completely ruins the charm of the game for me, at least not as a rhythm game collectathon. I'd still be willing to play through it just for the music and collectibles. Although I do wish we got a Western release so I wouldn't have to rely on Google Translate (which, as you demonstrated, sucks ass) or learn a new language just to (barely) understand what's going on. I do wonder how much of these issues are resolved or at least not so bad in the PS3 Remaster, if any? From how you described it, it doesn't sound like it changed a whole lot. I do gotta wonder though... assuming the PSP's smaller screen did influence the development of the sheet music layout, is the layout any different on the PS3 version? Because that would be using a larger screen. Anyway, I hope we get access to those arcade games some day. They look pretty fun too. Dunno how you'd get that card mechanic to work on an emulator though, which is sad because it is a really neat mechanic.

I’m gonna need the entire game Google Translated now, please. But seriously, this game is pretty average, but it’s great for one purpose: learning the songs on your instrument of choice. The boosted volume for your chosen character is perfect for nailing the part. I personally often have trouble picking out Azusa’s rhythm or Mugi’s keyboards, so this feature is a fantastic aid. Worth downloading just for that if you want to learn even a single song on the game’s playlist.

Thanks for the video. I stumbled upon this game because I love rhythm games and love k-on. I thought it was fine, i found it pretty clever that every song has 5 distinct tracks for each of the girls and that mio plays the d-pad because shes a lefty was a neat detail to me. I did not understand anything as i don't speak japanese, but seeing an item that looked like 2 loose pages and getting exactly the outcome i expected when giving that item to Ritsu made me real happy. But i do agree with you on the sliding key. Thats one thing where they should have broken from the "it simulates reading sheet music"

You might actually not be as bad as you think, PPSSPP and all emulators for that mater introduce a not insignificant amount of input lag. its not too noticeable on most games but when it comes to rhythm games its enough to make the game feel pretty hard to play. i can near prefect extreme songs in project diva on psp but i struggle to clear even normal on PPSSPP. its just something to note when playing rhythm games, might be able to use latency correction settings in game if it has any but portable system games usualy dont.

It's true though, like the game just doesn't function. For one it's on the wii so it involves movement which is fine whatever, cool. But Here's the kicker, almost none of the inputs actually register half of the time. So you're there just waving the wii remote, pointing in every direction possible like a insane person, and to the people who casually walk up on you without knocking on doors. They'll just be there silently judging you as you're transforming back into a monkey. I don't know man, It's just really frustrating. I've played a bunch of "bad" games during my existence on this planet. But this is the one I just can't stand, I wish to go back in time and throw a pipe bomb in the vents of the studio who developed that garbage. 0/5 IGN wouldn't recommend, looking at static on a crt tv would be more fun than that game. Fucking hell I hate it

@@Totaraumone possible reason I've stumbled upon is that MS had to swap A and B buttons (as well as X and Y) on their Xbox gamepad, to make it a bit different from SNES and don't get sued by Nintendo. But since a lot of existing printed game manuals stated that A is "Accept" and B is "Back", they inadvertently created this misconception when the "back" is on the right. And since Xbox-1 was a better deal in US, than any other console, everybody would just cope with it.
