There was also an earlier moment where Larry had no money, so gave some written comedy material to his comedian friend Carol Leifer as a birthday present. At the birthday party, Jerry was asked to read the material, and got big laughs from it. This is where Jerry and Larry came to the realization that Larry's writing coming out of Jerry's mouth was a great combination.

@@KurtI2525 No. Quite a few of the classic episodes happened after Larry left stuff like Elaine's dance, the yada yada, etc. They had a great writing staff for Seinfeld with people like Larry Charles, Peter Mehlman, etc. Plus one of the greatest jobs of casting ever even for things like one off characters that went on to be massively successful. No one person made that show. People went from giving Jerry all the credit to trying to give Larry all the credit. It's like or there were just a bunch of talented people working to make that show great.

@@DrHDoofenshmirtzphd well, Jerry and Larry are worth a billion dollars each and "George and Elaine" are just barely millionaires so equal doesn't seem like the appropriate Word to use.
Larry is the kind of guy to sign on to co-create the greatest sitcom of all time with annual royalties of $150 million to the cast(25 years after it went off the air) because he “didn’t have anything going on at the time”.

As a big fan of the show I absolutely love hearing this story!
This is the unique gift of Larry David. He has no pretense of being a rare talent that should interest anyone. He’s not selling anything. He has just milled around comedic venues doing what he always does whether on screen, or off and someone who was on screen invited him to be a part of that. And Larry had nothing to offer, other than what he does all day every day, and he has made two of the most enjoyable, enduring shows with the exact same format based on that. CYE just doesn’t pretend that the George character isn’t Larry.
I can't imagine Seinfeld without George Costanza!!

it was so unique, they came up with it twice!
They are both genius level creators. They not only see the humor in everyday interactions, they also found the comedic value of making a show based around those interactions.

It’s not a show about nothing - that’s a joke. It’s a show about people, about all of us, and how ridiculous we can all be. And that’s what the characters do, they turn ordinary life into plausible but ridiculous situations, maybe just a little over the top. Like the episode where they spend all their time looking for their car in the parking garage, and this very ordinary experience spirals out of control.

Here's the true genius of Seinfeld the show. Today, we have all these really brilliant, creative, edgy, cynical, insightful comedy shows like Always Sunny, Barry, Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman, South Park, etc. These are all shows that pushed the envelope so far that watching a show like Seinfeld today, the casual viewer would probably find it more similar to stuff like Friends or HIMYM. But there was always a very real and deeply entrenched darkness to that show and those characters, it was just very well-hidden. Seinfeld never had to have episodes involving hitmen, prostitutes, drugs, abortion, etc. in order to score 'edgelord' points. It was just a show about how pathetically and fundamentally greedy, spiteful, narcissistic, and petty people are. The fact that somehow, throughout its entire run, millions of people couldn't see that because they were so distracted by the whacky situations and catchphrases and goofy nonsense is what truly makes it unique and ahead of its time.

That's a good take. We didn't see Seinfeld here in Britain but many of us who are into comedy, including as part of that the history of comedy, watched it as adults and the things you mentioned are definitely a big part of what led the show to stand the test of time in a way that something like Friends couldn't, because it was too "safe". One that you missed was The Simpsons - that was shown here and we grew up on seasons 1 to probably around 15 when we still watched it on TV, and within those years were the golden years and seasons 3-10 or there about still stands up today as some of the best, most subversive comedy ever written.

How old are you? The cynicism was and has been known. All those shows you mentioned (SouthPark is one that may have existed if Seinfeld never did) were all blatantly inspired by Seinfeld. All that deep insightful humour from (always sunny is an interesting choice) is only available because of Seinfeld. Comparing it to to standard sitcoms like friends or himym is an undersell of the ages.
@chriscampbell6613

Also rick and Morty is not exactly smart and insightful. Cynical? Sure. Edgy? Is it really edgy if you have to try to be edgy? Like south park is edgy, but they have a point to make. R+M just use 'edgy' as a gag, it's entertaining. Not smart, insightful, or edgy.

@@chriscampbell6613 I'm 33. Used to watch Seinfeld a lot when I was 17 and 18. Among kids today, and even a surprising amount of people my age, Seinfeld the guy as well as the show is seen as 'soft, old-fashioned' humor. A lot of people think his rule of not cursing is really lame and just see him as the guy who jokes about completely mundane things like going to the supermarket or getting a haircut, material that's a thousand times weaker than what Dave Chapelle, Bill Burr, or Louis CK would talk about.

But I will say that Seinfeld predates Chapelle, burr, and pretty sure CK got his start as a writer, and an actor...something about muffin tops? I'm not a Seinfeld fanboy...know i sound like it atm, but respect is due where it is. Without a straight man, the show doesn't work. Without Jerry's stand up, his uncaring anti hero character seinfeld wouldn't be nearly as successful. Not to mention his writing.
According to what Jerry said, it was actually a phone call from NBC that started things. Without that call, they would not have started blabbing about nonsensical trivia in a Korean store. It was a serendipitous moment that turned to gold--two Jewish leprechauns bumping brains at the end of the rainbow. Add Curb Your Enthusiasm and Jerry's subsequent exploits you have one hell of a pot of gold.
