How Jarin Blaschke shot The Northman

Фильм және анимация

The Northman is one of the greatest epics of the year, it was also one of the most mesmerizing watches of the year, and for that, we have Jarin Blaschke to thank.
In today's video, I cover the equipment Blaschke used, his use of lighting to further the story, as well as how he and Eggers crafted the look.
As always if you have a recommendation for an analysis, let me know below!

The night photography is really amazing. The moonlight is neither blue nor grey but an immersive blend between. Read that Jarin Blaschke wanted this light after he saw minimal light pollution in the Eastern European sky

I was really surprised of the quality of the picture in those super dark situations. It look so clean, i thought it was an LF or something

Some shots had a very mythological look to them, which looked beautiful!

What’s really cool about the 2:1 aspect ratio is it way older than anyone ever account for. The first version was universal studios basically doing which day would be a super 35 2:1 then RKO superscope. Which is a very similar process and then Pana scope which was in the 35 or 65 mm cropped in

I didn’t do too much research into it for this video, but after reading this I’m going to have to take a really deep look!

Idk why but there’s something about the look of this one I just don’t click with. The colors and clean lenses are just a little too simple for my liking, my preference is for images with a little more grit and personality I guess. Btw you ever thought of starting a discord?

That's a fair assessment, I guess for me, there's that realism in the image, but without it being too distracting. It's crossed my mind, but I probably wouldn't start one until maybe 10k+, but if there was more interest I'd definitely do it sooner!
