I'm studying youtubers and KZread in general (I'll be big soon), but it's refreshing to see someone do a video breaking down one of my favorite creators, because I came in on the initial wave of James Jani content and seeing his virality broken down is extremely useful. It's a good thing for notetaking because it shows just HOW far filling in a niche and providing legitimate content can take someone when they sit down and apply themselves; it's a prime example of why you should study, take notes, prepare, and practice before you start making KZread content. Thanks again for making such an amazing video on James, John. Particularly the part about emotion linked to virality and the responses elicited from audiences by viral videos was very interesting and informative. I hope you do more content like this in the future!

But honestly in all my latest videos I've tried to incorporate some of these techniques; obviously putting my own twist on things too, but I just think that kind of editing style is more engaging to watch. They also look the exact same. Coming from a white guy, they have extremely similar facial features their voice sounds the same, age, hair color, etc. I litterally was questioning if he was talking about himself in a weird third person narrative for the entire video. I've watched both channels, but usually stream when doing homework or on a long drive, so they may not look as similar as I think.

I think its James' effort and quality he injects into the video. He posts average 1 video per month, but each one is gold.

He frames his videos around you, and us, and people as a collective. It's a far more powerful message and makes his videos immediately intriguing and engaging. I can only sit through a few seconds of Ali talking about himself and his latest habit before scrolling to the comments for a summary

Haha I definitely agree framing the audience around the audience makes it much more engaging! In fact now that I think about it, MOST 'normal' youtube videos I tend to scroll to the comments section incredibly quickly after opening it - just like you said.

Very true. I think there are many different routes to success with youtube, but we know for sure what metrics the algorithm seems to value most, and so that's why in this video I was trying to focus on the things James did that sent the right signals to the algorithm (like the ways he's increases watch time, clickthrough rate etc). Always gonna be a bit of trial and error to find what works best for you, but I think it's always useful to analyse what others are doing who are getting the results you want :D

Can't wait till your channel gets picked up by the algorithm the same way. Your videos are on James level so keep this up and you will be there in no time. Also great idea doing the collab that always boost a channel!

I was dead serious when I said I'm scouting you bro.

This was honestly one of the best videos about growing on youtube! I am an artist and mum of two. I started my channel back in october 2019. I thought it would help keep me accountable to do art if I commited to posting once a week, but all it really has done is make me do smaller quicker artworks, so I will have content. I have been breaking myself with the pressure of weekly uploads. All my enthusiasm is evaporating and I think I'm in Seth Godin's 'Dip' for a few months now turning into a pit. This is such a great insight you shared here my take away is that its ok not to post every week, one awesome video a month with an equally awesome artwork may actually be a better path to take! Thanks so much for this! 💜

Thanks for sharing, and I'm really glad this video was useful for you. You have already summed it up perfectly yourself, but I just wanted to say I completely agree. In my experience of analysing channels, one awesome video a month almost always beats a rushed weekly video. Especially if it's affecting your enjoyment of the process. Now of course, you don't want to become a total perfectionist where a video never gets posted because you're always trying to improve it even more, but I definitely don't think forcing yourself to stick to a weekly video is a good idea if it's negatively affecting your art and your enthusiasm. James Jani is proof that prioritising quality over quantity pays off, and now that I am focusing on 'documentary style' videos myself, I am starting to see a similar thing. Best of luck! :)

If you don’t mind me asking, is there anything you do to keep yourself from burnout of editing or not bored during the editing process. Ik it must’ve taken an extremely long time to edit this and Ik how monotonous the editing process can be, any advice would help thank you josh :)

For someone like me who has subscribed both you and James this is a dream come true. I wish both of you become most subscribed KZreadrs and also make a collab video one day.

This Video feels like a masterpiece. You tell the story of James and do the things you talk about the same time in the video, thats so genius. (Or I'm just noticing it when you say it) You tell a story I want to hear the end, the music gives me so many emotions and the editing keeps it entertaining. I love it!

You're videos are sooo well made! Seen 2 or 3, I've rewatched parts and done the whole way through. I hope one day I can be somewhere near your level. Honestly really well made videos that keep you watching!

It's so detailed and easy to understand even my little brother he's 12 and he can understand your videos as you don't use many difficult words. Thank you for this! This particular video was about 250 hours in total (research, script, editing, refinements, finding music/sfx, etc). Some of the documentaries on this channel are faster than that as they're shorter in length. However I'm working on a couple of projects that will easily pass 300-400 hours in total. Those still have a lot of work still to go though.

As I found your channel, I was thinking the exact same four pillars. Great work on producing this content!

lol, just finished watching "How To Be A KZread Millionaire" video....at that time the subscriber count was 29.9K subscribers right immediately after, I clicked this video and it's 30k...….You're going places definitely. That's a good number of gained subscribers within such a very short time frame....

I watched this video because it’s about James Jani. I watched just a few videos by him & I can truly say that his contents are not only engaging but are also value-loaded. Substantial info packaged in a very approachable manner.

i was just passing time watching on youtube for more updates of what's happening instead of watching news on my regular tv , i also started my own youtube channel and i used my own profile too , i guess being me as a regular person as me this is quite learning for everyone to watched , well done !!!

I've found you through the Whatsapp video and realized that you were on a very specific formula I'm familiar with especially with the emotion and narrative aspects of the videos, and the feel I would often get from channels that are rising quickly. When I reached this video, you just explained everything and it felt like everything just clicked on my head. I rarely leave comments like this but I do appreciate the hard work you've put into your videos.

Thanks a lot James! Check out the end portion of the video, I mention a specific skillshare course that James said he used, and that I've been looking at too. You can try it for free for 14 days too with link in description so don't have to commit to paying anything. However I also think just watching other videos for inspiration, and then looking up free tutorials on youtube of how to achieve similar effects, is a great way to improve as well. I'm now in a position where I can have an editor help me too, and I would definitely recommend that if it's an option, as this kind of style can be time consuming to do everything yourself (although I still think it's worth it long-term). To be honest, the first time I came across your channel, I thought you were James, and I had to go to About section of the 2 channels to check. Glad that I know both of you. Love your video styles.

I watched one of his videos and on the second I subscribed. In matter of hours I watched all of them and most of them even are not the content that I normally go for. But they are so good and I was hooked! :)

Note taken! I'm familiar with much of this from my study into marketing and psychology. James was an inspiration to me too.

You've hit the nail on the head there - a lot of people think KZread is just about art/creativity, but there is definitely a lot of marketing/psychology/business that goes into it too. Glad it was helpful. Are you working on a channel of your own Nick?

After I came across your video about tencent I started to watch your other videos and they are all sooo good. I Love the stoytelling and the information you put out and shared it with my friends. I started watching his video on the fake millionaire guy on my phone, 5 minutes in I had to stop and watch it on my tv. It was a documentary that was presented as if it were professionally made. It deserved a bigger screen ❤ I subscribed instantly! I ADORE long YT videos that are well made 🎉 I can’t quite believe it’s free 🙌🏻
