Video Description:
In this video I decided to make a ring like I've never done before. I used a laser engraver to outline the shank and gallery rails. The ring was then cut out of 18K gold, and and the soldered together. The claw prongs were then soldered to the gallery rails and the 3.07 carat lab-grown diamond was then set into the ring.

I can't express how much I enjoy watching your videos of creating these gorgeous pieces, from an artistic and manufacturing perspective. Also pretty shiny things :)

Jordan, that's simply exquisite! You make it seem so easy, but I know there's years underneath that sublime talent! 👏 👏 👏
It's amazing to watch those 3 pieces become one 😮

Sooooooo beautiful. I love cushion cuts!!!
Sometimes, when I watch videos like this, I regret that I've didn't change course to goldsmithing, while I was at school 18 years ago. I feel like I would have so much more fun working like this :3

That was so lovely to watch!! Was it faster or easier to use the laser engraver instead of rolling out and curving little rods? The finished ring is so gorgeous!
Beautiful
I really love watching all the different techniques of making a ring. With this ring and other small things made out of page stock do you need to worry about internal stresses in the metal while working on it? Does the affect whether you choose to cast or make something out of flat stock?
Simply gorgeous! Simple design brings out the beauty of the stone.
Absolute perfection, that's a ring I could do with for when I pop the question pretty soon 👍

Beautiful craftsmanship and stunning piece of jewelry! 😍 I take it's lab-grown, or is it? How many carats is it?
@moderngoldsmith
Ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes it's a lab-grown diamond and 3 carat in size.
It's awesome. I'm wondering why you chose this method instead if lost wax method. IS one easier or IS the end result that much different? Both seem equally challenging...
Wow, that was so interesting to watch. It's exquisite, well done, love it.
@moderngoldsmith

Thank you very much!
What are we some kind of modern goldsmith?
I've always wondered if you're work station? was originally all neat and defined or bought round and randomly cut
Therre was a LOT my father didn't teach me before he died. How do you manage to keep pieces in place during soldering? As soon as the flame hits the borax, things always move?
@moderngoldsmith
Ай бұрын
It's tricky for sure. The gallery rails are fitted to be held in with a very small amount of tension. Repositioning is sometimes needed after the coating. The prongs were done being placed by hand, but carving notches into the gallery rails helps guide where they should go
So, I've also seen many videos of you making rings out of... I'm pretty sure you've used a specific term for them, but I can't remember it. Bars? Little bars of metal that you roll and bend and shape into a ring. Why was this ring not made that way? It seems like bending a bar would save on potentially lost material from cutting that plate with a saw. Just wondering! Thanks for the great videos!
@moderngoldsmith
Ай бұрын
That is the traditional way to make a shank, out of ingots (the bars you mentioned) I got a laser recently, so I thought it would be fun to try something entirely new. I first designed the shank in CAD, then laser marked the shape on a 2mm thick sheet of gold. I'm not sure that this method "loses" anymore material because 99%+ of the material is recaptured, regardless of which method I use. Thanks for watching and the great comment.

Why would you opt for this method instead of bending wire into a circle to start the ring?

Lot of waste sheet to make a simple shank.
I think that the band is far too thick. It would have been better made out of a rolled piece, as the prongs were.

Добрый день коллега. Почему ты не выпиливаеш кольцо сразу по контуру, на мой взгляд ты делаешь двойную работу, увеличивая потери материала.
