I am really impressed with you and your plot, sometimes it does feel like an upward battle especially with slugs, but when you look how far you have come you must be really proud.😊

Pouring here for days but I’ll share the watering with Mother Nature 😂. Powdery mildew isn’t harmful just cut off the leaves. Through some chilli flakes around the plants or diatomaceous earth or both 😂. It’s all coming along and a learning curve every year because it all changes. Have a super weekend hope it cools down a bit, Ali ☔️🇨🇦

Powdery mildew can also be caused by insufficient watering. I have noticed that you don't water your crops very deeply and I have mentioned this before. I know it's difficult if you rely upon water from a water butt but the crops do really need more than just a short sprinkle of water. The yield from the potatoes was also possibly because of too little water as the compost did look very dry. I would have left the potatoes for another 2/3 weeks before harvesting. I have also mentioned putting shielding paint on the glass or some shade netting on the greenhouse glass - it really does help.

We all have days like that. I don't have a greenhouse or allotment - just a tiny back garden : so I go back inside, get a cold glass of cider, buy some compost, contemplate the Slugapocalypse where Caped Superheroes save all plantlife, and generally chill out😢 I feel your pain. Basically (and I'm a beginner too) I would only put in the ground bigger plants, water much more, and increase soil depth and organic matter. Compost the world!❤😂❤😂

You've probably already heard the usual approaches to tackling slugs... the (in)famous slug trap of a ramekin with beer... apparently people have mixed results with that. One that seems like it might work is copper tape. Another gardening youtuber I watch made rings from the copper tape (not sure what they attached to to make the rings) and put that around the base of plants they wanted to protect... so that might work? I was just thinking you could raise that netting by getting longer sticks and putting the hoops on them and a moment later that's just what you did... there's a bit of engineering in you ;) Re the powdery mildew... I have a feeling Mr D. either said there's another thing that can show up on leaves that isn't powdery mildew but does look like it, and or he said it's not really anything to worry too much about. I think like the rust on Garlic it won't kill the plant it will just reduce the amount of sunlight they can process... apparently a spray with milk can help? I've never tried so I don't know. The sweetpeas do indeed look lovely... I can imagine the smell :D

I feel like I’ve tried all the slug defences and some seem more effort than they’re worth! But we will see - if my replacement plants get eaten then it’s war!!! 😂 a lot of people have mentioned the milk spray - my courgettes seem to be doing okay regardless so it can’t be too bad 😂🐸

Some squash leaves do naturally have a white patchy look to them. It may not be powdery mildew. Rub the white area and see if it wipes off. If it does then most likely is mildew but I have had many squash plant leaves look like yours and it wasn’t powdery mildew.

It's been such a tough year, but you are doing great! I really do recommend Nematodes for getting rid of slugs, but be aware they dont really help if you have alot of snails as their life cycle is different and they dont spend time under the soil. I round up snails and either chuck them in my compost heap or take them for a trip and put them in the nearby park on the walk home! 😅

I’ve not seen any snails - it all seems to be slugs! We used nematodes on our home garden and it seems to have helped 🧡🧡

Now Emma, everyone knows you need to make a sign saying 'no slugs allowed' for your allotment! I must admit we use slug pellets, the sort that kills them but doesn't harm the birds or anything else

Hi Emma, your potatoes weren't ready, next year take flowers off as they take a lot of energy that should be going into producing the spuds, when the foliage drops or starts to turn or different colour then they are ready, I always scrape the soil away in my tubs too see how my main crop are doing, I reuse the compost and add well rotted manure, fish blood and bonemeal, its a learning curve, Steve

  • @HouseOfTedYT

You’re not on your own with the powdery mildew and slug attack on the courgettes. I’ve had exactly the same thing happen. What I’ve done now is cut off the damaged leaves and leave them on the floor and I’ve noticed the slugs are eating these and leaving my plants alone! I’ve now got one fabulous courgette growing. Having said that I’ve now realised I’ve left a gate open at my plot and the rabbits have probably eaten everything!!
