OMG Clare you should be so proud of yourself. I can’t believe you’ve done all that in just a year. It has got to be one of the best allotment/garden/growing spaces on KZread. Just to make the rest of us feel happy can you show some failures🤣🤣🤣 A quick tip re the parsnips, when it comes to harvesting them be very careful as I believe the sap or whatever they call it from them is quite caustic to the skin. I saw a video by Terry King once and he got badly burned by it. Well done again Clare.

Ooo now you mention it, I did see a video by Gemma too, where she mentioned this with parsnips. I remembered thinking I’ll remember that… clearly didn’t! Thanks for the reminder 🫣🤗 It’s been such a crazy year. I can’t get over how fast it’s gone and it’s such a reminder to think how things have changed in 12 months. Crazy to think the plot didn’t exist a year ago isn’t it? It’s all so addictive. Those sweetcorn are going to be the biggest failure this year 😂

A woodland garden would be lovely. What a nice thought, especially the wildflowers. I don’t think we are ever 100% satisfied. It’s human nature to want something different or “more”. That’s part of our natural ambition. Who knows what the future holds ❤️ Thanks for being part of the community and for supporting me this year ❤️❤️

Haven't commented for a while due to my tablet dying but been watching on the TV but can't comment on it. Congratulations on your first year the plot is a credit to you. I sow 8 lettuce seeds every fortnight in little mini cells thats enough for us, I think you might regret having the Cosmos and Calendula plants in the veg beds,yes they look lovely but they will drop seeds all over the beds. Wait another 2 years before harvesting asparagus best be patient it'll pay off again I take my hat off to your first year, beautiful plot.

Sorry to hear about your tablet. I’ve recently had a new iPad for editing on and I’d be lost without it now. I can’t believe a whole year of gardening has passed. It’s flown by in such a blur. Still find it hard to think how much the growing space has changed in a year. I have made a few jokes about being fed up of calendula in years to come. If quite like to plant it on some of the farm tracks. It’d look lovely if it took over those ❤️❤️ I don’t think I’d harvest any asparagus at all until the spears were thicker. The plants we recently put in are the year old crowns and they are most definitely significantly ahead of the year old crowns planted more recently as bare roots. I’m excited for asparagus, whichever year it is ready ❤️

The big mistake my boss made a few years ago was to take the spears too early, I did warn him but he couldn't wait. Since retiring as gardner at the big house on Thoresby I've got Quadgrows for my tomatoes and cucumbers as I can now take holidays and these are good for up to 10 days. Therefore after over 20 years at Thoresby we can now go away during the summer instead of the autumn and winter, I'd thoroughly recommend them from garden sensations x

Thanks Danny. Hard to believe it’s been a whole year already. Give it another couple and I might finally see that imposter syndrome fade away and refer to myself as a gardener 😂 I did direct sow some peas, which have all come up, so I might try beans next. I have less beans seeds so was seeing if rodents found the peas before I tried the beans 😅😅 I’m loving the garden now. There’s so much work but also so much to be pleased and happy about when I look around and see so much starting to grow. It’s addictive ❤️❤️

Wow carrot and onion beds look great I’m doing a third sowing in a new (old) raised bed. Your excitement is palpable and well deserved you have done a wonderful job. Poly is awesome and holy look at all those marigolds ❤. I love the old shed it reminds me of a log cabin 😂. A wonderful video Clare really enjoyed it, have a marvellous day, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

I was thinking you meant the garden room on the lawn for a minute. You mean the one we need to mend or replace lol. I’m so pleased with the way the plot is looking but completely understated the amount of work and the amount of pests I’d have to contend with 😅😅

Those Bloody Mary nasties are fab. Pink lemonade BB's are our favorite tasting BB's. That is an incredible amount of garden space that you tend. Good on you for a job well done.

There’s so much garden here.. I need to get on with sorting out the in-laws old side, especially the borders at the front. It’s so much work. We also have a lot of grassed areas along the driveway we need to keep tidy too.. and I’m not getting any younger myself 😅😅 I absolutely love the Bloody Mary nasturtiums. They’re so pretty. I did like them anyway but was drawn to them as Mary is my mother in law’s name. She finds it hilarious 😂

Such a lovely uplifting video Clare, well done for everything you’ve achieved. Also good to share the things that aren’t going as expected or hoped. I haven’t posted for a while due to time and the relentless slug damage. I totally get it when you said there are times you just didn’t feel like it. But I’m glad you did, always a pleasure to watch 😊

Congratulations 🥳 on your first year it has gone by so quickly but has been an awesome journey. Male flowers always show up first to attract pollinators to the girlies when they arrive. My beans 🫘 are insanely slow, only ones doing well are the purple queen pole beans. Great job on the arches Sir Duncan of the Shorts. Broad beans 🫘 look awesome 👏. Calendula is stunning I really love them 😂😂 and your sock 🧦memories. I’m commenting in between jobs 😅😅 so I’ll be back. So far absolutely amazing work, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

Oh those fluffy towelling fluorescent socks (and leg warmers). The 80’s were so much fun! I am hopeful we get some consistently warmer overnight temps, as I’m sure that’s key to the issues this year. We had a wet summer last year but temperatures overnight were warmer than this year. I’m so sold on calendula. I would love to see it flowering along some of the farm tracks. Wouldn’t that be amazing? You’re always busy too. So much to do isn’t there? Hope you’re all well and the weather is playing ball for you now. Hard to believe it’s been a whole year already 😍🙃

Happy Anniversary Clare! Certainly a huge transformation! Those marigolds are unbelievably fantastic! I wonder if it is the heat in the tunnel keeping them away? Only 2 of our marigolds have survived being planted out as the rest were munched. Polytunnel does sound a tad too warm for the tomatoes. Maybe look into solar panel fans but you would need a big one for the size of the tunnel. The tomatoes should recover now that the temps have come down now. We had that in London in 2022. I would love a polytunnel but i think it would just be too hot and humid and not enough air flow. I really want to get things like shade cloth and polytunnel fabric to go over the trellis framework but is can be quite pricey. The poly plastic is mainly to keep the rain off like a canopy. If you aren't doing single stem on the indeterminates, then just make sure to prune the lower leaves that gives the most air flow, not just between plants but also any leaders that touch the main leader. Yes you should try propagating some tomatoes if you haven't already? Even if it is just to experiment for yourself. I always try to over winter some but i do that later in the season. Just make sure to remove any big leaves from the sucker as well as flower stems. I love experimenting in the garden and indoor plants and will try to propagate anything i like to grow! lol My issue is trying to find people to take my spares and propagations! lol It is also hard with no family near and extreme social anxiety and dyslexia .... Love your main front garden. Very cottagecore and suits the beautiful house. So do you live the annexe side with also the dog section? It's great to have a play space and we try to balance that in our garden with the lawn section. Definitely a great idea to have a dog play section too if you have the space. We definitely knew where our fur daughter went for a wee but kept her "nuggets" to the gravel, which is now full of containers! lol We have just levelled off the grass area as it used to be a mature landscaped garden full of shrubs and a small tree. We moved some of the decent shrubs to the border and the tree down shortly after we moved in during a storm. We put a play sandpit , with a canopy there as it was more in the shade, but now they are older we have used it as a veggie bed this year and our courgettes that didn't do too well are thriving as a 3 sister bed. Growing Black Beauty and a yellow courgette. So nice to be able to access that lawn area and also upcycle something. It's 1.2msq so perfect. A bit crowded on the gravel/shingle side but able to grow such much more now in the garden. I know you don't like yellow things and it's the first time growing them but they are really nice and juicy and the skin is softer. We are also growing sweetcorn and yellow kentucky pole beans (another new for us) and they are just flowering. As a new trial bed it is doing great and as a courgette lover, it is so lovely to have home grown courgettes again! They just cut and taste so much better than shop ones! I have noticed myself and other growers mentioning it, how much of a bonus crop we are getting on soft fruits. I also haven't seen any cabbage or general butterflies in general this year, let alone wasps. We did have bees and lady birds late spring but nothing much since. Lots of aphids, blackfly, ants, woodlice and of course tons of slugs and snails. The fungus gnats and fruit flies have been about but also not so many mosquitos?? I normally would have been eaten by now! Anyway, yes do keep showing your updates, if you can. Like you say it is a great community here on YT. I love seeing honest successes and failures. It may not necessarily be the same as someone else but sometimes, if there is a common theme like the weather, germination, compost or pest problem, etc, it is good to know about and also if you are in the same boat as some people. Love seeing the livestock and wildlife too! Take care x

Thank you. It’s hard to believe how fast the last year has gone. I actually grew yellow courgette last year, as one was given to me. I don’t much care for the colour of them (surprise surprise) but I did use them for courgette fritters and chocolate courgette cake 🤪😂 Well done on the new beds you have. Lovely to find extra space from repurposing old areas. It’s been a crazy ride this last 12 months. Here’s to the next 12 ❤️❤️

We have an amazing community and you have done well from a slightly overgrown garden to now. I have a huge space (Allotment) like a jungle and attempted it, but it is slow. Any advice on clearing large areas is welcome. Well done on your achievements so far.

Thank you so much for your encouragement. I think I’m probably not the best person to ask as I have across to diggers, being farmers, so that’s always our go to. A little and often if you are having to do it by hand and maybe covering the ground that’s cleared to suppress weeds from returning. Good luck with it 🥰

All that cardboard might have been a faff but you've done a great thing for the planet by sequestering carbon😊 👏 👏 👏 Also a favourite of the worms 🪱 Also saw a great tip once...a gardener put a mailbox in the middle of his garden with a few hand tools for very easy access. Keeps them handy and safe from the weather 😂 📭

That’s a lovely tip about the mailbox! I love that idea. Thank you.. I might be able to make that work somewhere. I do use cardboard a lot in the compost too, so I’m not against it. I was expecting the cardboard beds to have less weeds but they’re all pretty much the same. The worms definitely love it. My beds are teaming with worms and the compost bin is a thriving worm palace too ☺️

I find it hard to imagine what the farm looked like prior to the bed/greenhouse explosion. It’s been a pleasure watching your journey and the enthusiasm and excitement along the way. Thank you for dragging me along on this fruit and veg escapade, with the added bonus of spending time with you, at times we have cried with laughter. Duncan however might have a different opinion😂😂 Now with my insider information hmmmm Frankie goes to Hollywood, you were into the beastie boys 😂😂

Wow congratulations Clare on your youtube anniversary and also your amazing plot. I have a question if you dont mind, if you could only have either a greenhouse or a poly tunnel which would you have…..or buy first! I keep going back and forth and changing my mind what to invest it first. Thank you 😊

Ooo decisions! Cost per sq ft a polytunnel is cheaper than a greenhouse. If you only had space for one, I’d say a polytunnel. You generally have more space to play with in one of those. Personally I couldn’t be without either, especially at the start of the season when I’m sowing, as the greenhouse is warmer overnight than the polytunnel. Bizarrely the polytunnel can actually be colder than the outside temperature. No idea how that happens! I do think something like the Polyeco type tunnels, in a decent size, could actually be a good compromise between both I still can’t believe it’s been a whole 12 months of KZread videos. Flown by. Thanks Maiju. It’s been a whirlwind but connecting with so many other people along the way has been lovely. It’s made it so much more enjoyable be able to share our gardens with others on this platform. The nasturtiums really are lovely. The pink ones are just starting to come back out now too. I all love the colour and being able to enjoy the flowers amongst the vegetables and fruit too. I’m so pleased to hear your grandmother grew them the same way. I keep meaning to put the one in the polytunnel on the horse manure yard. Keep forgetting to get around to it. Here’s to the next 12 months for all of us ❤️❤️

My French beans have been rubbish too.. Eaten by slugs or yellow like yours. I knew it could not be lack of nutrients as it was fresh high quality compost with balanced fertiliser. I thought, maybe too much fertility, but I read it can be when it's too cold, they can't extract the nutrients, even if there enough in the soil. Mine are also now starting to look better and my newer ones have stayed green! Here's hoping! I love the red nasturtiums! I have a mix and i hope i get more red ones. Lol, I also throw weeds over the fence into the field ... and also, this year, slugs!! Oooh. I did the same with my garlic! They came out really easily though. Thanks for the tip!

I had no idea I should use a trowel. I will next year now. I filmed this on Tuesday and have to say they have greened up a bit since then. Must be the overnight temps and the wind/rain we had. Makes sense to think they can’t use the nutrition from the soil when cold. Thanks for sharing that. I’m glad I’m not alone in the fence fling! 😂

I have leaf curl on my tomatoes in my greenhouse, it's caused because they are under stress due to getting cooked by the sun. Need to use better shade.

The whole tunnel is south facing. I’ll have to see what I can rig up. Not quite as simple as in my greenhouses. Thinking cap on 😅

I have rhe same leader at the end thing with lots of my tomatoes. Plus zillions of side shoots. I stuck them in 9cm pots and inside 2 weeks they have roots poking out the bottom and need potted up or planted up!! Excess fertilizer maybe, or maybe just the varieties? I love your black beauties!

I think it’s probably a combination of everything. Heritage varieties doing whacky things, the heat and maybe the fertiliser was a bit strong. Who knows. I may try to pot a few up, not that I need more ☺️🙃😝

When it comes to Asparagus the male is more profilic in producing thicker and more spears than female Asparagus plants. Most people end up removing female ones and only planting male plants.
