How is Hikaru so strong? | Nakamura vs Caruana | FIDE Grand Swiss 2023

Спорт

Hikaru Nakamura beats Fabiano Caruana in the penultimate round of the FIDE Grand Swiss 2023. It was a beautiful attacking game that showcases the power of opposite coloured bishops in attacking positions. As all the other games are still in progress Nakamura is now the sole leader and has great chances to make it to the Candidates via the Grand Swiss route.
This means that the rating spot could be now open and the fight will be huge for it.

tough to say, I think caruana might become number 1 in classical because both hikaru and magnus are not much interested in classical as they used to. Just imagine...Hikaru had online chess for around 20 of his playing years. You know that when the guys play online, they don't play 3 matches in a day, they play 300. Now imagine the volume of someone having been born after 2000, with online chess available from the toddler stage. If guys like AliReza and Gukesh improve during their 20s as Magnus and Hikaru did, they will be 2900 beasts by the time they turn 30 Just because they will have played 10,000s of games more than Magnus and Hikaru did at their age of 30.

False equivalency. Naka is playing according to his true strength these days because he has learned to control hia nerves better. He has time and again said that the revenue from his streaming career has made him put less stress on his OTB chess. Fast/online chess does not improve classical chess on the contrary it harms it. Just look at the example of nihal whose bad habit of playing too much bullet and blitz has hampered his classical strength. On the other hand prag, gukesh and Arjun have continued to grow way past 2700 as they stayed away from bleeding hours playing bullet/blitz.

An algorithm puts moves in order of what it THINKS is best, then proceeds to the next level or PLY in its calculation, spending time looking at what it believes to be the best move(s) in this candidate move list. If a player makes a move not in the top of that list, and suddenly, the search algorithm sees that this new move, once made, allows for a better or worse path forward, the evaluation may move up or down accordingly. This threshold of not being able to see beyond a certain distance is called the "Horizon Effect" and it illustrates that once a new move is made, there is often enough clarity to see further ahead enough to alter the evaluation. Thus making a move reduces complexity and improves clarity. - j q t -

It is just something I feel belongs to classical chess, in the same way wearing a suit belongs to a theatre, or a christmass-tree belongs to Christmass. Why, that is difficult to explain. I guess, I am of the opinion that classical chess is the most important, prestigious kind of chess. So, writing the moves down stresses the importance of the occasion. Both players have to sign the sheet after the game to verify the result, etc... Also it is a tradition. And I am just used to it. Also, I am collecting all my gamesheets, I have a pretty nice collection after ten years. Without writing the moves down, there would be no collection. :D Edit: obviously it's good if you want to analyse the game.

I want Hikaru to win the world championship so badly, he always said hed never win one because hes already in his 30s and theres this guy called magnus carlsen that plays...but now, magnus has essentially retired from classical chess and I don't think there is any other player that is better than him. What I mean by that is thay Hikaru is just as good as any of the other top players in the world and has just as much ability to win the candidates and beat Ding as anyone. On his best days, he's the best player in the world sans Magnus. Its just a question of if he can play to that potential when it matters most. Don't forget, he came within one game of being in the championship match last year.

Hikaru had two connected passed pawns and they both recognized that there wasn't any way to stop him from getting a queen.

Connected pawns for white against an outnumbered king in that position is winning, especially for a player of super gm caliber they are not going to blunder a well know theoretical victory.

It could be a pre- arrangement game because with this Hicaru win it would be a great chances that Nakamura will participate in candidate.

@@KNNY61 No way Fabi is giving up rating points like that. A draw maybe, but never a loss. Especially since this is his third loss in classical to Hikaru in a row.
