How I Stay Motivated as a PhD Student!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey wonderful humans,
Today I'm giving you my tips and tricks on staying motivated during the 3-4 (or more!) years it takes to complete a PhD! These are some of the things I do keep myself on taste, excited about my PhD and motivated to work.

My name's Lucy and I'm a humanities student focusing on queer romance novels of the 21st century, so obviously this won't be the same as science people. Also, everything I say is my own opinion! If you have any questions about PhD life or studying at UoB feel free to leave a comment or contact me on social media.

Great points. When I have been struggling with a "boring" task, I have noticed that I have forgotten to set up a progress measure. Having a % number or a graph helps, whether the work takes 3 days or 5 months. For the latter I also calculated the likely end date based on the rate so far. It turned out to be rather far away, I got stressed out and without meaning to communicated my panic to my advisor. He pointed out that I already seemed to have enough data and might consider ending earlier that originally planned. Best meeting ever!

Definitely! Sometimes for the ‘boring’ tasks I find I need a way to measure my progress more! That’s great about your supervisor! Sounds like he is really supportive 😊

Thanks for your great videos, Lucy. I'm doing English Literature too and expect to come to Birmingham soon. I wonder if there is w student portal or online group that helps you stay connected with your mates and get some living tips for an international new comer. Thanks in advance!
