The Research Ethics Process as a PhD Student at the University of Birmingham!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey wonderful humans,
Today we're talking to all about the ethical review process at UoB! I guide you through my application and what I did to get the ethical approval for English Literature PhD that uses surveys, focus groups and interviews!

My name's Lucy and I'm a humanities student focusing on queer romance novels of 21st century, so obviously this won't be the same as science people. Also everything I say is my own opinion! If you have any questions about PhD life or studying at UoB feel free to leave a comment or contact me on social media.

So basically because of the pandemic a lot of funding was cut/cancelled last year and because of that I’ve kind of just given up on getting funded on a larger scale. Instead I’m working on applying for smaller funding pots for smaller projects etc

@@LucyHargrave do you think its unrealistic, then, for me to think i may get another shot at funding in my first year as i start the phd in september? i just feel like giving up on the phd already. how on earth am i going to work full time and visit archive which only open on certain days at certain times. my english lit dept encouraged me to do the phd part time because they really seemed interested in my project and didnt want me to take it anywhere else. but the logistics just make no sense. i just feel like giving up already

Sorry YT didn't tell me you'd responded to my comment so I've only just seen this! So there is funding available throughout the year but as I said in my first message it tends to be smaller - you'll get it for a conference or a trip rather than a stipend to spend however you want like fully funded PhD student. So I would agree it will be very difficult to do a PhD full-time and work full-time. Most people either work full-time and do the PhD part-time during weekends, evenings etc or do the PhD full-time and then work part-time around their research. The only person will know what is realistic for you is you, and possibly your supervisors. But don't feel discouraged! A lot of people have this struggle, especially when they start.

What is an argument in literature research? Because sometimes authors are overt in their purpose and theme. For example Dalit writers write about their and their community exploitation, humiliation, discrimination in various fields of their lives. Is just researching about protest and anger an example of an argument?
