For me it was waking up at 5am to play Counter-Strike 1.3 before school. My parents thought I was insane, but some of my fondest gaming memories were from those times. I remember getting really mad if I missed my alarm and didn't wake up in time to play it.

I think most games have stopped making memorable experiences like having stylized artwork like Jak and Daxter. I'm not saying games like Skyrim cant be appealing to play but even the people who made the game took the time to make it's greyish environments still look amazing. It can be full of greyish colors but how you merge environments is key. That's where subnotica below zero failed and even the first subnotica game excelled at which made you feel immersed.

Best way to enjoy games, is to not read anything about it. No guides. No steam forums. No Reddit. The fun part is discovering things by yourself, if you spoil everything and instantly play the meta OP thing, you're ruining your experience.

Let's be real. The best way to enjoy a game is whatever method you personally find to be the best. Play the way YOU want to play, whatever form that takes. Whether it be meta, off-meta, griefing, using cheats(in single player), following guides or exploring blind. Playing on easy or hard. Hardcore or not. Don't play how others expect you to play. Or how others tells you to. Try that sure, but if you don't like it that way, try a way you yourself believes will be more enjoyable. We all gotta remember that the best way to enjoy any game, is up to us on an individual level. What is enjoyable for you, might not be so for me.

My experience --> Key Notes 1. Don't watch other playthroughs or anything related. Ex - I planned on beating Metroid prime 2 & 3 but then Metroid 1 remaster coincidentally came out then I ended up watching a whole playthrough and lost interest in my original plan without even starting.. I had everything set up too with an HD mod. -_- (gotta recharge my interest now, give it a year or so) 2. Games vs Other Media (YT, Anime, TV Shows) If you stick around long enough it's eventually gonna soak up your time & "Media Energy" thus you don't feel like playing games or as much as you would that day. --> Play as soon as you wake up or before jumping on the internet. 3. Don't force yourself to play in a certain order, you wanna play dark souls 3 first instead of 1 for the first time? Go ahead, who cares, it doesn't matter, you're gonna have fun either way. If not, you're more likely to end up burning yourself out and playing a game you don't really enjoy as much, thus never really getting to the main game you truly wanted to play, whereas you would have had a better experience if you went with what you truly wanted to play in the first place. 4. Ignore critic videos, watch only early gameplay & core mechanics to truly determine if you would really enjoy playing through it. 5. Play whenever you want & how you want & have fun. Easy mode hard mode no one cares. It's your experience that only really affects you. I'm also an enthusiastic gamer :D My lineup right now is Monster Hunter Rise 130+ Hours in (Didn't even feel like it), Tales of Vesperia, Final Fantasy 7 Ps1, Breath of the Wild, Dark Souls Remaster, Final Fantasy Crisis Core, Mario & Luigi Dream Team, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 1 and whatever indie game or nes, snes, gba etc. classics I feel like beating in between. You only have 1 life after all, manage your time well.

Yea I agree, especially about the doing stuff in the order you want to and playing games how you want to even if it doesn't "make sense" to others. I love messing around in MH:R. The friends who introduced me to the game were total tryhards who only speed ran the game and did "meta" builds. Super serious about the game. While I love them, I think speed running MH and taking it over-seriously is just pointlessly stressful. You gotta enjoy the grind, and sometimes that means being a little silly. Building a full shock elemental glaive build is stupid? Call me the bug zapper. I shouldn't build a greatsword build based only on aesthetics and not whats "meta"? Well, I'd rather feel like a fashion icon while I hunt than one shot the monster. The "real game" doesn't start until master rank? Well i wanna have fun today, so i'm gonna do some easy low level hunts and just hunt monsters i enjoy.

The actual problem is that people let themselves be told what to play AND LIKE nowadays. Different opinions used to be OK. When a friend came over, we played GTA 2 because he didn't like Tekken. Nowadays, for example, I don't actually like Dragon's Dogma 2. I'm not having fun with it. Try telling that to anyone. They won't recommend a different game that fits you, they'll tell you you're dumb and clueless if you don't like it.

DD2 is a bit of a weird one right now because I think a lot of people also feel the need to defend themselves. Normally I'd say yeah, people get overly defensive of the things they like. But in the wake of just how much misinformation there was with DD2, and all the comments being slung around calling people that enjoy the game "the problem with gaming" and stuff... Yeah it kind of got a little personal on both ends of the spectrum here. Messy business all around. Your nose is red, mine's blue, but we're all still clowns at the circus and all, y'know? Generally speaking though, 100% agree. People are way too butthurt when people don't like the thing they like. Emotional immaturity is so draining to deal with.

Staying away from the toxicity of others that don’t even know what they’re talking about is the best way I can actually breathe while playing. I want to play to have enjoyment, not play only to think about the stupidity being said about it. When I’m not playing games or working, I write. It’s usually something in my head that I want to write out as a story and doing something like that is a good way of taking a break from playing games. Tangentially related to the end of the video: I used to make a lot of purchases in mobile games at a low point in my life because the instant gratification dopamine hit was some of the only joy I felt. This was, I don't think I really need to say, very bad for me. I didn't remove my payment info from google play or anything of the sort however, I just made one small change. I toggled it so that whenever I want to make a purchase, I need to input my password. Just that one, small barrier between me and a purchase cut down my spending by over 80%. Because I would either be too lazy to bother, or - more often - in that time I would be punching in my password I would have time to think about what I'm doing and stop it before I finalized the purchase. It worked wonders, and now I don't do it at all anymore! So I believe the trick to culling bad habits isn't strictly just mustering up willpower from nowhere and quitting on the spot, but rather making it more difficult or less rewarding. At least in this case. I know it's not exactly what the conversation is about, but it was tangentially related enough I wanted to share. Thanks for reading!

I think the main reason why is because most of us are 20+ year old dudes that have been gaming since we were 7 or something. So it's obvious that not every new game will peak our interest because not every NEW game is a FRESH game. God of War 2018 is good but it's nothing I haven't seen before, Starfield is not terrible but it's just Fallout in space with worse characters. A newcomer will LOVE these new games, so they aren't bad, it's just that's harder to surprise a veteran audience. Think of like 30 year old horror movie buffs watching whatever is coming out today. They see the same kind of monsters, the same kind of plot, the same kind of jumpscares, and they will rarely be engaged with the movie as much as a 14 year old kid will. That's just my pov tho

Absolutely agree with this. It's hard to impress someone who's been playing videogames for years because they've probably seen it all. Many companies nowadays prioritize new audiences because that's where the most money is rather than capitalizing on their OG communities. A one-size-fits-all game is like a big trawling net; even if some fish escape you still get a large haul either way. The problem with a game that tries caters to everyone is that it ends up catering to no one. But they don't care because by the time people realize it, the corpos already got their money's worth.

I agree with this. Every time I sit down to play anything new it doesn't take very long for me to start feeling like I've done this a hundred times before. Indie games are the only thing that can seem to keep my attention for very long. Balatro has been fun. What's kind of weird is that I do occasionally like to go back and replay games that I've literately played a hundred times before. Not sure what that's all about.

I stopped really playing video games probably around 2013 or so, last console I ever bought was a 360. And I caught a game here and there since then, but it wasn't ever anything like it used to be. I grew up as a "gamer", had like 8 different consoles and handhelds, sending my mom to Blockbuster twice a week for rentals. My brothers, friends, and I all got it in. But after adulthood the AAA space started taking a nose-dive and my interest dropped at the same time. So when, sometime over the last year or so, I subscribed to Gamepass for a couple months I came to find there were some absolute bangers on there. Dishonored 1 & 2 were so sick it made me feel like I was playing a classic the entire time I played them. I probably sent 5 total back-to-back playthroughs combined in various different ways. Played through Gears 5 which was pretty solid all things considered. Even though I only really got 3 games out of my time on gamepass, even if 90%+ of the games offered looked either awful or boring, I'm glad I got to experience those. There's still gold out there, it's just a lot harder to come by. But the point Josh & Asmon are making about being willing to meet a game half way is 100% true. It's so easy to lock onto and pick apart all of the flaws of a game as you play, and it'll undoubtedly ruin your experience of the game. And sure, some games are just better than others. They make it harder for you to identify horrible flaws because there are less of them. But you're shooting yourself in the foot when you aren't willing to try to look past the rough edges.

I am a Resident Evil novice, and although I am old enough to have seen RE1 release onto the PS1, my only experience with the franchise was over my brother's shoulder and then later on some no commentary full playthrough videos on KZread. In a fit of madness I recently bought Resident Evil 5 as it was on sale for super cheap, a game that released in 2009, and decided to say "What the Hell, let's do it". I had so much fun. And the reason for this is because I was so intimidated by the franchise, I started on the easiest difficulty, and played the whole thing through. Really enjoyed it. Then I upped the difficulty, and went through it again, unlocking infinite ammo weapons and familiarizing myself with the game to the extent I felt confident to play veteran difficulty and completed it. I'm stuck on pro difficulty at the moment at the giant boss, but I still boot it up a couple of times a day to have another crack.

This is why I love single player games and I appreciate them more now that i'm older. I have very little motivation to play something like Apex or Destiny like it feels pointless and mind numbing, but when I play something like RDR2 or even Dragons Dogma 2 it doesn't feel like a waste of time. In those single player games I can immerse myself in their world and escape reality. Now that I take my times more with games instead of rushing through I start to notice more details that I didn't used to notice before and I get invested in a lot of the lore texts around the world. There's always a time to play those multiplayer games with friends, but when that really good single player game comes out it can truly change your enjoyment for games.

I had the experience when I was a kid playing Majoras Mask where I thought to myself "this is not fun and I'm wasting my time" after trying to do the games stupid sidequests. I never really shook that feeling again, some games just hit you on a meta level of being so unimmersive they are intolerable. A long time later of not playing games I picked up Breath of the Wild and loved it, played through Dark Souls, Hyperlight Drifter and a bunch of others and enjoyed my time with them. And then games got boring again, as I caught up the current ways games are made and the immersion is gone and playing games just feels like hitting plus 1 on a calculator for hours. Novelty is critical for games to be fun, but only a few games really break the mould. Most games are not designed well and have features that are literally just traps to waste your time. I do think the less you explore off the main path of a game, the less likely the curtain is to be pulled back, generally the more enjoyable the game is, although there are lots of people who like completing every part of a game. I can only assume those people have more free time than god.

It was the Medal of Honor, duke nukem, doom, unreal tournament and early call of duty fps shooters I enjoyed. I DID however play the original Army Men games. So when I happened to find an UNOPENED Diablo 2 battle chest at a thrift store I grabbed it just to keep, I downloaded it and played 1 and fell in love with the grainy graphics that I loved from the army men games. The story, the Tristram music, amazing. Diablo 2 was amazing. And I’ll play them again. The fact that games 20 years later cannot capture the imagination and excitement like older titles is telling.

the video is entirely correct and ive weirdly had to teach myself to enjoy games due to playing MMOs for such a long time. ive been stuck in the mindset of getting to the end and doing the end game content for way too long because its honestly just how games are geared now... asmongolds point at the end is a bit weird tho.. hes rich.. he never has to worry about the price tag of a game.. i garantee you that he does not experience buyers remorse.. personally i will debate about buying a game that i KNOW i want to play for way too long before i do.. i literally wait years for games to go on sale.. not because i just cant afford them.. but because i feel weird spending 80$ on average for a brand new game i may not even enjoy.. legitimately played through the borderlands series and all of the dlcs just this past year (came out in 2019 lol) because the bundle went on sale for like 30$.. absolutely do not regret my purchase. it was one of the best experiences ive had in a very long time.. but it took me years to justify that purchase.. his average gaming experience is not what it is for most people.. just saying. . now i am in no capacity saying most people are like me.. im honestly a bit of an an oxymoron.. i work only to live and after that i dont care about wealth or money whatsoever.. but at the same time, i am extremely careful with what i do have... so an 80$ 60$ tag on literally pixels on a screen makes me question whether ill regret it or enjoy it. a game could be 29.99 and go on sale for 12.99 and ill still be like "yeah but am i actually going to play that?" these are not questions asmongold is ever going to ask himself due to money lol... i understand i probably spent twice that amount on fast food for my wife and myself for one meal.. but its still a thing.. i have never been able to shake buyers remorse even when my wife says "just buy the damn game who cares?" BESIDES ALL THAT.. zack doesnt have the annoying as fuck voice in the back of his head that's constantly saying "if you keep doing this, you'll be homeless and no one will ever love you" as he literally gets paid to do it lol.. THAT is the real issue here.. most of us just have WAY too much stress from responsibilities and legitimately cant enjoy our games.. there are days where i actually think about and plan out what im gong to do in game later when i get off work, but by the time i get home take the dogs out feed them do my routine stuff.. i dont have the mental capacity to achievement farm do raids or antying else that i really wanted to do.. so instead, i doomscroll while netflix is playing something i dont care about in the backround as i eat and then eventually watch an asmongold video or two on youtube before i go to bed. the only time i truly feel like i can enjoy playing video games is late friday or saturday night where i dont have to worry about next day responsibilities or anything other than enjoying the weekend with my wife. not sure why everyone acts like the main issue is microtransactions or pre-ordering.... (but you should also stop fucking paying for that shit too dumbasses)

You really have to decide do I really really want this game? Or is it literally just something I’m buying to cure my current boredom? Because generally when I was buying something to just cure my boredom, it does , VERY temporarily then I was even more bored after AND had less money because I just bought a game I actually didn’t want.

How I do it: - I play a game if I think I will enjoy it. You might barely know your own tastes, but e.g. If a game is "overwhelmingly positive" on Steam, it has consistently been a game I enjoy. - If I'm not vibing with a game, I will just stop playing and move on. I don't have to force a completion. - I now and then dip my toe out of my comfort zone and try another genre I rarely play. This also has consistently introduced me to games and experiences I love. Maybe sometimes take the time to actually try out those "filler" games you get on Humble bundle. - Allowing yourself to like what you like. If you enjoy only the first half of a game and want to stop playing midway everytime and start a new game instead, do it. If you have more fun speedhacking through the boring running segments because there's no fast travel, do it. If you want to make a cheese build to destroy every boss, do it. Play how you want.

It makes the game much more immersive and enjoyable, that even if i get tired of it after hours of playing i end up the session with a smile thinking about the funny moments i had with my friends and what will happen the next day. In the end we play to have a good time and make memories.

I got through a LOT of backlog which was awesome. Got to deep dive into games that I wouldn't normally be able to. It made it possible for me to change my gaming habits going forward to no more live service games unless they are with friends and to keep the story mode games to 2-3 a year. Back in the day, we had discs. Devs had a passion, and vision, and they would put out games that were as close to fully complete as possible. More recently, alot of that passion and completeness is missing from corporatized games. It's a big reason why indie games have been feeling better and better to play, while AAA games have been feeling worse and worse. There's still a small issue of completeness on both ends, due to the way gaming has evolved to be consumed faster (every game being "early access,") but with more bugs, which may be a net positive. But, in general, gaming has felt worse overall, even though there are a decent amount of good games out there. In that past devs had alot less room for error and nowadays they (probably the suits at the top, not devs,) think they can get away with releasing mediocrity, then fixing it later. It's important to keep pushing back against this so that we can see more well done games in the future.
