Surprisingly, advertisements do help a lot depending on the company. I remember when my old company massively cut marketing budget and the company quickly went to absolute shit. It was funny to see them scramble to get marketing department back up and running again.

1:17 4 years ago I walked in on my mom watching this EAXACT commercial. She was all up in arms about her car being used to spy on her. It took almost two hours of explaining to her the reality of the situation. There are tens of millions of people like my mom without someone to talk sense to them. It's sad and terrifying. What this ad campaign is attempting to do is make it illegal for you to have your car serviced by a local mechanic. They want to make it so you HAVE to take it to the officially licensed mechanics than will charge you an arm and a leg. They're using the mental vulnerability of boomers to scare them into giving up their freedom. It's unbelievable how evil ad companies are.

With no explanation other than "if you vote for this, this is what will happen!"... i.e. if you are allowed to repair the circuit board in your own car.... :-/ It was terrifying for people that had no idea what was actually going on.

Legit. Companies cry like bitches at the notion of Adblockers and go "SOB SOB YOU CANT SKIP THIS IT GIVES ME MONEY TO KEEP ME AFLOAT!!" while they put "Hot single moms in your area" ads on their websites that lead to Trojan viruses and malware. You just can't feel bad for these people. They compromise the safety of people who browse their websites and then cry like babies when people block them. If they did their due diligence and paid attention to WHAT they advertise and make sure it's honest and safe advertisers, then it's fair game. As it stands, that's probably like 5% of websites. This is true. I saw that disclaimer that you have to agree to on the Roku channel while I was helping my mom stream a show she wanted to watch. I read the terms and it makes you waive the right to file a class action lawsuit vs. them. So I explained it to her and asked "do you think you might have a reason to sue Roku at any time in the future?" And she said she didn't care, she just wanted to watch her show. So I agreed to it and let her watch the old episodes of Gunsmoke that she wanted to watch. TV used to be free. I talk to my dad a lot about the good ol' days back in like the 1950's when when was growing up. There was no cable subscription, you just had an antenna and that's what you could get and the way the monetized it was commercials. I absolutely hate how much technology has allowed us to spy on each other and take advantage of each other. I hate how greedy our society has become. Some greed is ok, even healthy to some extent. But it's so easy for the companies to do this because of 1. how addicted people are to technology. 2. don't care. and 3. are technologically illiterate. And our boomer government officials who can barely turn on their computers to read an email are the ones who are supposed to put laws in place to protect us, which you know they will never do. Protect yourselves as best you can.

We should be able to refund and return any product that they change or force you to accept terms and conditions that you do not agree with. If there is no "reject" button and/or if you cannot use the device without accepting those terms, you should be able to return the device and get a full refund, no questions asked. The terms and conditions were not visible to you before buying it. So you should be 100% able to return the device because you can only read the terms after you bought it. I have no idea how there is no legislation for this yet... not even in the EU.

I brought up Yoshimitsu from Tekken at a party one night, we were in the living room(she doesn't play games). She went to go check her facebook later on in the night on her laptop in her room and got ads for something Yoshimtsu related and it freaked her out. Somehow that wasn't enough to convince her, so she bought a wire tap (alexa). The relationship ended up falling apart for unrelated reasons. Now people just say "well I have nothing to hide, so let them spy." The future is bleak.

"high end TV's subsidizes low end TV's" Nope. It's actually the complete opposite. in 6 months in a electronics store in a area with ~70k people I alone never went a single day without selling a TV. Most bought TV? The ones that cost ~700 bucks, maybe closer to 900. Did we have a decent margin on those? Yes we did. The amount of times I sold high end TV's? Those select few, at most once a week, that came walking into the store knowing exactly what they wanted and half the time the store had a 10-20% loss at _normal_ pricing. 2500 bucks and we lost almost 300, because we had to have that model in store or they'd go someplace else. The regular models? If someone bought both a cheap wall mount and they opted for the first decent soundbar (second or third cheapest we had) they would likely be getting the wall mount for free, or if it was more expensive closer to 50% off because margins were already good enough on the TV itself which allowed me to make those deals. Either way, putting in roadblocks or majorly altering a bought and paid physical product that is now in your ownership withing 5 years of purchase is grounds for a full refund here in Norway, especially if it severely diminishes the function of the product as advertised upon purchase. It's not legal and the EU won't let it fly.

It was the same with my LG TV. I thought it would be cool to turn my TV on and off. Instead I had to create an LG account, consent to data collection, link the two accounts, consent to more data sharing between the accounts, and ended up with this response when I said "Hey google, turn on my TV". "Ok, asking LG to turn on your TV." followed by an 5-10 second pause before it finally turns my TV on. It was so useless I could just go find the remote and turn it on myself.

I think a reason that they’re pushing ads so hard right now is because of the switch from cable tv, to streaming services and personalized content. Everybody in the world used to watch commercials for 5 out of every 25 minutes it seemed, now you can just get a free blocker and watch KZread or ad free Netflix or any other streaming service, with zero commercials. Imagine if you’re building a new company with tons of promise and you’re trying your damndest to spread the word about your product/services. Or you’re an old well known company with a new service and you’re trying to get the word out. But everybody is watching ad free Netflix and nobody reads newspapers anymore, everything is through Facebook and KZread and instagram and X, and everybody’s using ad blockers, like how tf? I think we need to be more okay with ads, the problem is we can see the same ad 5x over again like raid shadow legends. It would be better if there were actual good ads, instead of the bottom feeder ones.

Louis Rossmann is an amazing man. Fighting for the rights of people to repair the shit they already own. Laughable that the guy who commented to Asmond thinks he needs ad revenue from youtube, as if its his main source of income, when the video content is for consumer awareness and education. Its also a gripe outlet for him that he uses to complain, justifiably, about all the shit the governments and companies do that piss him off. Trust me guys Louis is not doing youtube for ad revenue. Its exposure and marketing for his right to repair business and cause. I also love my 20 year old Sony Bravia 58 inch, flatscreen, 1080p TV. What little "smart" features it had, have all been abandoned and no longer work, and I love it. I never used them, and I never will. They were and are garbage. The TV's picture is beautiful and I will never get rid of it. Most the shit I watch is streamed from my PC to it via ethernet cable with HDMI to Ethernet dongles on each end. Its fucking amazing, I pirate everything and havent seen a TV ad in at least 15 years. I avoid anything with advertisement. My computer, podcast and audible books supply decades worth of content beyond anything I could ever consume in a lifetime. Go Ad Free Life guys, you will be so much better off for it.

So if you pause the video, after a few seconds it will replace the space below the video (such as comments) with a giant ad until you hit play again. I don't know if it's intentional or "just a bug", since I've also seen normal ads replace literally every second video in my recommended feed.

As a professional software engineer, I see no benefit in using tape to cover up your webcam... They sell webcam covers on Amazon, 6pcs for $4, and they have a little slide so you can still use your webcam when you need it. Much better option than getting tape residue all over your phone or laptop.

I once thought to myself 'Eh, what the heck? I'll go ahead and pay for youtube Red and stop using adblock.' And I did, and everything was great... for about 5 months before youtube started giving me ads on videos again even though I was paying them not to- the only difference being that instead of the usual ads, I was getting ads that were urging me to upgrade my subscription plan to a higher tier. That was their one chance, and they blew it. If I'm going to pay for no ads, I expect to get no ads. No exceptions.

Tbh I have no idea how ads are even sustainable. Even when I'm not going out of my way to avoid the products they sell out of spite, I can't imagine ever going out of my way to find something I see in an ad. Like my ass can't even relate. Even when purchase is completely accessible, I can't even bring myself to pull my credit card out for things I actually want. Let alone a product that feels they need to sell me on their product for anyone to buy.

  • @BunjiKugashira42

I believe the first step is to create a subconscious desire for the kind of product they're advertising. Like if you see enough car ads, you'll think about replacing your old beat-up car with a new one more often. If you see enough ads for chips, you'll get hungry for something salty and fatty. Once you're in the supermarket it's just a matter of name recognition. The advertisers bank on you not remembering why you know the name of the brand. As long as the name and packaging seem familiar to you, you're more likely to take that product. Sure, you, me, and many people here will actively avoid products that we got annoying ads for. However even we can't remember all the ads that slipped through the filter and most people don't even bother setting up such a filter.

Why do I spend some of my precious free time going to the forums of companies I dislike and explaining, in detail, why I hate them? Spite, pure spite. And I always put a reminder in: that their practices were so bad that they managed to convince a customer or prospective customer to actively campaign against them. Edit: wait... am I fucking Karen!? GDPR is only there to protect any consumers data. I work in Retail and have done so for the last 20 years. Many store chains I have been in had to remake all their membership lists and only include those who agreed again after GDPR was established. Any Retail company have to maintain the laws on a daily basis. Not having any consumer data laying around like phone numbers, addresses, old recipt. Even goods that have been returned we have to remove old delivery stickers. GDPR is a good thing.

I think what Asmons talking about around 10:40 , is already existing. It’s called being grandfathered in. When you buy a service package, then that package changes in the future, your service isn’t affected, unless you change to a newer package then you can’t go back to your grandfathered package, because it doesn’t exist anymore. That’s why a lot of elderly people are against switching from their older tv services, because they have some grandfathered package and their perspective of it’s value is out of wack because they haven’t kept up with modern services, because they have this special “grandfathered” service. Some of them are getting basically scammed, paying insane amounts for tv services when they could just switch to KZread tv or directv stream and save like $40-$100 a month usually. It’s sad how they’re being taken advantage of, but money is money I suppose.

I pay for all the content on the internet by way of the subscription itself. If the media companies that provide the connection are not distributing the funds based on ratings or traffic, then it seems the system itself is flawed and that isn't my fault. If I am going to get ads on a service I'm paying for, then why am I paying for the service? They are treating our internet service like it's free air-wave television from the 20th century, and that's the problem. The last time I watched ads on youtube would be in 2018 ish... got about 6 ads in a row, all blaring loud and high resolution, while the actual video was buffering like crazy and super quiet (someone covers how and why the ads "sound" louder without being louder than the content, as per regulatory definitions). The few ads I have seen since, after installing Brave, are blocked after an update, usually a day later; about 7 times in the past 6 years I have used my phone and found youtube to have updated their ad system, and 3 of those times I waited over 12 hours before an update on the app, all being under 24... Louis Rossmann has several videos covering how people will start pushing back if they try and push more and more ads.
