How I sift out cocoons and easiest setup ever

The easiest way to sift cocoons and set them up. I reuse the bedding, I later add a little more bedding and start the cycle again. I only reuse the bedding 2-3 times. This is standard practice for commercial worm farmers.

    I love your videos. I have a similar harvester that I made. Try taking cardboard and make a wall on either side of the drum. As it spins, the castings hit the cardboard walls and fall down into the bin.

    Great video on separating the cocoons. I have found a new product to sift the worms. I’ll keep you posted. Just posted a poor man’s sifter for compost. I tried counting the cocoons and gave up.

    I just realized that I already had my own mini-Harvey for seiving out large items in my kitcgen worm bins,, a small, office mesh paper basket. The mesh is plastic covered so it's soft on the worms and it has mesh at the bottom and sides. So I stand it in my spare tote, put in a scoop of bedding, tilt it on its side and turn it gently, then tip out what is left inside into another bin.

    You already have the makings of the tromel you want. All you need to do is leave each end open, the crank turning the two small wheels on one side and the whole thing set at about a 15 degree angle. Doing that, you can add a funnel to the uphill end and as you feed material, castings and cocoons small enough to pass through the mesh will do just that, while larger things like dizzy worms, will tumble downhill, finally spilling into a bucket (to their relief!) and you can work batch after batch, constantly turning the bin by hand or by employing a small motor to roll the bin.

    I'd also add a some plastic where the worms come out to funnel them into the bucket neater. It looks like a good trommel already. 😁👍😊💚🎃

    If you are doing composting outside, I would throw the cocoons in the compost. They will hatch and the worms will grow up there, but the trick is you have to make sure it maintains very moist.

    What do you do with all the tiny hatchlings everywhere?

  • @TheGardenAndWormLady

    @TheGardenAndWormLady

    I remove the adult worms and I leave the hatchlings which are actually called wisps in their bedding. I add a little more bedding, but not much. I rewet it and I’ll give them a chance to hatch and grow up.
