How I sharpen my belt knife. Bps Adventurer. Make your bushcraft knife super sharp easy !

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I show how I sharpen my belt knife, well all of my knives. I do not sharpen my knives in the traditional way. I sharpen in a way that works easy for me, so I hope this method helps other who also struggle with sharpening knives. #bpsknives #bushcraftknife #edcknife #bushcraft #sharp #sharpening #pennsylvania

This is the method I sue. I got to doing it that way from sharpening machetes which are a real favorite edge tool for me. I have never done it with the edge straight up but that makes a lot of sense. Over the years I realized that I was spending too much time rubbing the edge with my finger or test cutting paper to tell if it's sharp. After a life of doing that I finally realized that it really helps to actually look at the edge. I use a lighted magnifier. From that I learned that I was moving to quickly from the course stone to the medium and onto the fine stone. The course stone was the one I was not using enough and I suspect that most people are light on using a course stone since it digs in so quickly but it's important that you get your knife profile and edge profile correct before ever starting to sharpen it at the medium level. Same with moving to the fine level of sharpening. You got to make sure you are finished at what ever level you are on. I got another idea I need to share with you. I got the idea form a friend of mine who finished gunstocks on high end rifles. Rifles have the same problem as wood handle knives, hatchets and axes in that they are use out side in the weather and elements. Here is what he does. He uses Minwax Antique Oil. This stuff has been around for decades. Even the manufacturer seems to have forgotten about it and you rarely see it in Lowe's or Home Depot. It's some mix of solvents and Linseed Oil. My friend thinks there more to it than what the manufacturer is claiming. What is killer about this stuff is that it dies slightly harder, seems to protect better and after it's been on for a season your handle just feels like natural wood. It's not a night and day difference but the improvements are all in the right direction. Another important part of this is that he uses a burlap rag to burnish the finish. First off he puts on a thick coat and lets that soak in as much as possible and lets that dry. Then he starts burnishing it by polishing it with the burlap like you would shine shoes. After that he puts on light coasts and lets the dry a bit and burnishes each one. He puts on more coats than I do. I stop at 3 figuring I'd add to that finish every year. He also finishes the necks on custom made guitars in the same manner. He did one on my old guitar and it's the best finish I have ever seen on a guitar neck. It's dry and hard and feels just like the smoothest wood you have ever handled. Sorry if this is a little long but I get excited by this stuff. When I see your videos they remind how much I love this sort of stuff.

There's nothing stupid about that Joey! All my bush tools cop the same treatment, bush knife, leatherman, machetes, axes, butcher knives. I use little Norton stones for about 5 bucks each and have em scattered everywhere. Cheap, convenient and portable. About the only time I bother with a bench stone or grinder is if I really mess up the edge on a rock or something. Finish with a strop on your belt, trouser leg, or leather boot and it's good to go. Good stuff! 👍

Thank you so much Kurt !! Yeah man I try not to get to elaborate about it, I’ve seen guys spend 100s on different stones and sharpening systems to achieve this same edge quality. Funny you bring that up because I use to use my boot or my jeans as a make shift strop before I actually made one and it seemed to work just fine. I mean dude we’re using these tools in the bush not slicing tomato’s 🤙

There is nothing wrong with that. It’s more honing than sharpening, but so long as your life isn’t really dull or chipped it will definitely work

Thanks Kevin !! Yeah man I totally agree. I would have to say 90% of maintaining my blades sharpened is just done by honing, either with a strop for extremely fine stone (mostly a strop). If I’m actually going through the full sharpening process then yes the blade is either nicked or to far gone. Thanks for watching man !! I need to catch up on your channel I saw you have a lot of new stuff posted. It seems I can’t get a second lately to watch KZread !!

I use an unusual sharpening device called The Block sharpener. I had one back in the '80s and didn't know how to use it and recently I bought two new ones. Basically it's just too honing steels criss-crossed and you pull the knife through the steels. You can just hang this little thing around your neck and it's perfect for keeping your knife sharp in the field. Unfortunately I never seen a single person using one of these.

Thanks man for doing this video I bought my BPS adventurer knife based on your video review of it and I really like it a lot Probably one of the best knives I’ve ever owned I bought a worksharp field sharpener for it that works fantastic and is easy to use for a beginner and easy and light to put in my pack. I also struggle with keeping the angle correct. The worksharp field sharpener has an angle guide on both sides

I forgot the brand off hand I’ll have to look at the tag, but I believe it’s either and old field and steam or something of that sort. It’s an old hunting flannel 👍. They sure don’t mike them like this anymore !!

I can see where this would work well maintaining the angle. However, I would cut the crap out of myself. I have the Adventurer and love it. It is beyond wicked sharp. Like you, I struggled getting a good edge on my knives until I finally bit the bullet and purchased some Shapton Ceramic stones....amazing difference in speed and finish. That being said, the pocket stone is nice for in the woods touch up etc. Amazing how the BPS knives will take an edge. I do use the Shaptons like you are when doing when doing my axes.

Ahh yes truth be told I’ve myself many a time sharpening in this way. Oh nice, I’ve never heard of those stones. Sounds like you like them. I think I may look into them and give them a try. Yeah I usually do most sharpening before I go out in the woods, but it’s always handy to keep at least a pocket stone with you. I agree the bps adventurer takes and amazing edge and seems to stay sharp for a while as well. Thank you so much for watching !!

  • @WayneTheSeine

@@940joey2 The Shaptons are a bit pricey but worth every penny. They are splash and go so they do not have to be soaked. I think a three piece set, 320, 1000, 5000 runs about $129.00. I also like the 8,000 and have the 12,000 though strapiing will do just as well. When you finish the 8,000 you have a mirror finish, which I love and strive for. Another good feature is, they do not wear very fast, so it is easy to keep them flat. I never use the reverse side for anything but flattening my stone....one against the other.

That was a leather strop I made. It’s just a piece of 7-9oz leather on a piece of wood with a polishing compound on it. The strop is what I mainly use to maintain my edge unless they really need to hit the stone. The strop is meant for honing and putting and exacta sharp polished edge on your knife or axe. It’s pretty much the same thing you see old time barbers use to sharpen their straight razors before shaving. 👍 hope this makes sense ‘n thanks for watching !!
