    Very useful video Joey, thanks. I always mark the thick end of the wedge front and back ^u saves mistakes later I would recommend using a 6 inch length of flat bar say 2 1/2 wide and 3/8 thick as a drift when driving the wedge. I have 1/2 dozen or so different sizes in the tool tray. Makes for easier more accurate wedge driving. I fit with the handle in the vise and the bottom standing on a secure block. When the wedge is about 3/4 the way home, take it out and a couple of sharp smacks on the end of handle, will correct any 'slippage' of the handle through the eye. Put it back in the vise and drive home. I absolutely agree with you, fit with linseed rather than glue. In general, wedges pop out only if they are too thick in the first place. One thing that is nearly always ignored is that, fitting one main wedge only, compresses the handle in one direction, ie side to side. When axe is in use, the biggest stresses by far occur in the other, longer axis, ie at the ends of the eye. I always fit a pair of cross wedges along with the main one, to provide good compression in the long axis. In many European axes, there is so much taper in the ends of the eye, that I need two pairs of cross wedges to fully compress and close up. Yes, I could use a couple of steel wedges, but if you later need to take the head off, you are pretty much 'stuffed'. Takes a little longer to do and a bit of practice, but the head stays solid for longer, and the effort is well worth it. thanks again for the video ... OG

    WOW !!! Awesome comment, thank you so much !! All great ideas here man thank you. I haven’t tired my hand at cross wedges yet. I definitely agree that could be a great help in some of the larger eye European axes. I have a couple very large eye axes, so I’ll have to give it a shot. Thank you so much again and thanks for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed the video !! 🤙

    You said it in one part of the video ( just from experience ) . The best way to ensure a good fit is to have a few beater hangs under your belt . Keep the axe stuff coming axe man🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓

    @@940joey2 Lol, I recently had to re-seat an old axe further down. That part of the handle had originally been below the head and got chewed up at the front, so theres a small gap. I didnt have any hardwood besides my wedge, but I had some 1/4" welding rod and I really wanted the job done. I ground the rod-core into a slight wedge, instant regret, its hideous. Looks like I pounded a big nail in there and its stuck tight, I just know its going to last forever.

    I will actually BLO the area the where the head is going also on the last seat and the wedge. Then I apply the wood glue but on top of the BLO. I'll be uploading a video on how I do it later today. That is a very nice hang on that very nice axe.

    Great job, very informative. I have found during my last few hangs of axes (and hammers) that I get great results when driving the wedge by holding the axe upside down, resting the wedge against a flat surface, and striking the butt of the handle. It helps jump the head fully onto the handle while ensuring the wedge is driven in straight and makes it almost impossible to split the wedge. Try it sometime; it may surprise you.

    Love this video man. Love the rambling too. But I have a major problem. I do this with axes, hammers, anything that needs to be hung. When fitting the head, I shape the head so it’s a tight fit at first. As I keep checking, fitting, and filing to get it to sit lower to the shoulder, I end up with a handle that it’s way too small for the eye. Like I’m taking way too much off but I’m not. It might have to do with the eye being larger on the top than the bottom but looking at yours, you don’t have that problem. Before you even touch a wedge your handle is perfect fit in the eye. I’ve about given up I’ve screwed up so many now lol.

    Awesome video. I sometimes still struggle with shaping wedges perfectly I actually like them longer than the eye of the axe head so I kinda if taper it both directions. Also I love that handle man it’s the whiskey river NEC it’s a repro of a Tatem handle which I have a bunch of the old originals as well. They were from Connecticut but used often on axes from Maine and New Hampshire where I’m from.

They feel awesome, super thin, and the feel great in the hand, I think it’s going to make an excellent chopping axe handle !! Oh that’s awesome thank you for the history lesson, I know they were obviously from the New England area but never new what they were modeled after that’s badass !! Awesome man I really hope this video helped out a bit, I’m really happy you enjoyed it !! Thanks for watching 🤙

    Also I love the stormy kromer hat and leather suspenders. Where I get the suspenders? Looks like your axe collection has grown I’d love to see a series on you sharing the collection if I ever start videos that’s what I’ll do first. On the wood glue note. I used to love using it, I have my favorite true temper FSS cruiser on a Killinger Adirondack red elm handle that has loosened in the frigid temps here. I need to work it down the shoulder more and thin and taper the shoulder but I glued the wedge and am dreading drilling it out. I prefer to try to go without glue now.

    Thank you so much my brother got me the hat for Christmas, I’ve been wanting one for a long time and oh the suspenders thank you, I actually made them myself. I made them with some super thing Herman oak harness leather and all the fittings are brass. Yeah man the collection grew quite a bit. I’ve actually been getting rid of some recently, come to think of it I got rid of quite a bit. Ahh man I love an axe head stamped FSS I think I have 1 or 2 but man they’re awesome such cool history and dang you have a stamped cruiser now that’s awesome !!! Killinger handles are sweet I have one on my kelly perfect and I love it, wish I bought more I didn’t think they would come to an end. It’s funny you mention tansu because I’ve been asked a lot to do a video of the collection and I’ve shot the video a few times but I’ve never been happy with the out come. I’m trying to film it where it’s not boarding and I don’t want to come off pretentious. Heck yeah definitely give just oil a try when you re hang it I’d love to hear what you think. Yeah drilling out a glued wedge is annoying but take your time and be careful not to damage the handle and you’ll be good 🤙

    Great job and good advise regarding blo vs glue. Question how do you handle humidity when hanging axes? Being wood expanse and contracts with various moisture content, do you run a dehumidifier or only hang on dry days? How do you work that?

  • @940joey2

    @940joey2

    4 ай бұрын

    Thank you so much !! So as far as humidity goes yeah that’s tough for me. My basement where I keep all my axes is very humid and damp in spring and summer and in winter and fall it’s very cold and dry. Mg basement also floods a lot like every time we get rain I can guarantee I’ll have water on the floor, now the real question is how much 😂.. so what I do remedy humidity is a dehumidifier and hope.
