How I Potty Trained My Nonverbal Son | Autism and Potty Training
How I potty trained my nonverbal son.... this has been a long journey with lots of ups and downs but I can finally say my son is independently going to the potty and having no accidents! In this video I go over all we have tried and what I think really helped and what I wish I hadn’t done.

My daughter is 7 and in pull-ups. This gives me hope. Thank you!!!

Well done Christian😭💙 Hats off to you mum for all the patience and never giving up❤️
My son turns 4 this June and lately I’ve been thinking about ways I could possibly start with him. Because he is under the spectrum as well and nonverbal. I absolutely love your patience and the amount of times you said you had to reinforce over and over. I too, am constantly trying to stay and calm as long as he’s comfortable and okay it should not even be much of a struggle as it is for us than it is FOR THEM! They are definitely amazing in their own way. Your story definitely sounds like a challenge but I honestly believe they would totally eventually catch up to us and try and try as well. Thank you for sharing you gave me hope after being depressed as to HOW DO WE DO THIS?!!!!! Amazing!👏🏻
Love this! Congrats! Such a huge milestone. I'm hoping my 5 yr old daughter will potty train this year. Thank you!
Thank you sooo much for this!! Sooo proud of Christian and everything he is accomplishing!! 😇💖 New autistic mom here, so it’s awesome to hear from people who already experienced things!!
Congratulations that’s great news 🎉 I just started potting training my 4 year old son who’s on the spectrum as well as my 2 year old son I’m hoping potting training them together will help them both ❤
I really needed to hear this!! My son is also autistic and three. He’s speaking but not in sentences and he does not communicate if he has to go potty we just take him every 30 min and he’s pretty good about that but, he doesn’t care either if he’s peed or pooped, need to try the briefs soon!! Thank you!!!
This has given me realistic hope with my 3yr old. We've only just began and it honestly seems like it won't happen. Thank you @rockingthespectrum 🖤🇦🇺

So happy I came across this video I’m a first time mother and my son is 3 and has autism and is also non verbal and I’m finding it very challenging so this help me out a lot thank you
Just found this video. Want to start by saying thank you for sharing this. My son is 3 almost 4 and is on the spectrum and nonverbal. We've been trying to potty train him for months nothing is sticking. I started to get a bit discouraged so this video gives me hope. I'll definitely try some of these tips. Thanks again for sharing. 💛💛
Thank you so much for this video 😭 a lot of these videos I see make it seem like 1…2…3. I beat myself up for not doing what all of the world was suggesting such as putting my 4 year old on the toilet every 30 minutes because I’m a single mom and I have a daughter as well so doing that and trying to manage the household and retain energy and patience was detrimental to my mental health. However I am now in a place where I feel like I can take this on with Gods grace and your video truly made me not feel so guilty for not being ready sooner. My son still isn’t interested in using the bathroom on his own consistently but he will be 5 so I wanna try and see what progress can be made with ABA. God bless you and your family and thank you again for this channel. 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂
Thats such good news.. I cant wait until my son finaly learns to go in the potty. Hes 4 right now.

Yaya i knew he would get it and his success is bc of his parents.
Thank you for this video
Good for you mom.. you are great 👍
Amazing video!
Great tips!! And I love the part you said about kids developing differently and that they may not be ready at age 3, or 4, or even 5! That's so true!! I read something the other day that said something like "popcorn kernals all go into the same temperature oil, but they all pop at different times". Same is true for kids, they aren't going to get it until they're ready!! My oldest son was pretty much potty-trained by age 3 (though he's almost 5 and we still have accidents every now and then). My youngest is 3 now and he shows no signs of being ready. I'm okay with that too!! We'll wait til he's ready! So proud of Christian! That's such a huge step of Independence!!
Thanks for this video very helpful subscribed 👍🏽
So helpful tysm!
Ya Allah please help me I need to do this for my son
Congratulations 🎉🍾🎊🎈 @rockingthespectrum 👏👏👏👍🎉🎊our son is 3 year and 6 months and also nonverbal he finally go to the potty all by himself at home and school. It was a long journey to get him to finally potty train and believe me all your tips are being very helpful for us to fulfill that goal. 👏👏👏👏 the only thing we have been struggling is when we go out to public places or a long drive we still have to put him on diapers because since he doesn’t talk I haven’t find a way for him to communicate and let me know when he needs to go to the potty. I have been trying to use the sign language for potty, but still no success any advise? I appreciated it 🙏

That’s a hard one. I would always just take him every time we got to where we were going and also right before leaving. I would be stressed but that was what we a had to do. We Just made sure he went every 30-45 min. For long road trips I still had him in pull ups for a while. This last road trip I made sure he didn’t have lots of liquid and we stopped every 1.5- 2 hours to potty. My advise would be to try to have him point to a toilet pic if he needs to go. I would make sure to have him sign or choose the picture even if he doesn’t do it independently, just to try to get the repetition down so hopefully one day he will do it 💙 Even if he doesn’t tell you with words you can also look for the signs like (potty dance, hyper, fidgety)

Rocking The Spectrum thank you for your respond 🙏 my son is doing pretty good with PECS and your idea sounds great 👍 to have the Toilet Pic close to where he sits on the car so he can exchange the pic when he needs to use the potty. Thank you very much we are together in this journey and learning strategies for each other it will make our journey easier and hi5 to Christian 👋

I am 22 my and my gf adopted her little cousin because her uncle couldn’t take care of him anymore… when we first got Clark he wouldn’t communicate with us.. he wouldn’t make eye contact he couldn’t stay focused for long… I feel like he thinks using the potty is punishment.. I have no idea how to make it fun for him

You can do it, try not to stress, my son was also fully potty trained the summer after he turned 5, # 1 wasn’t much of an issue for us but was inconsistent at times, #2 was what took forever it was rough but we got there. I hope you dont mind me chiming in. I know its easy not to stress but if your stressed it may make him worse. I would also say be consistent ( But also know its ok to take breaks), try not using pull ups during the day either ecspecially if your home ( I put a tarp on the couch to protect it) and then gradually try that when out. Potty books are really important, and anything that distracts them to stay on the potty. I found w us giving him independence with it really helped, i tried not to be too intense. The day he got it he was in the bathtub by himself he got out to do his business i was so surprised. Be patient and know he will get it in his own time. I hope this helps.

No we haven’t
How did you dedicate so much time to take him every 5 minutes or 10 minutes? At home does he have open access to the bathroom without an adult? I am afraid to let my son roam the house so we have a gate in the playroom. He elopes all the time and will go out the doors leading to outside. He can open doors even with child locks on them...
@ROCKNSTIMS
Жыл бұрын
It was extremely hard and not something I would recommend now. I think every 15 min is the shortest time in between I would do but 30 min to an hour is usually good. He does have access to bathroom without an adult at all times. Have you looked into getting Chain locks that are high enough for him not to reach ? Eloping out the house is such a scary and dangerous situation. I’m very fortunate that my son never tried leaving the house but he has tried eloping in public.
My son is 6 yrs old and he's still not going. 😞🙏🏽

Man I have a 9 year old who just won’t go in the toilet
My daughter is 5 years old and is on the spectrum. She understands when I say “come on let’s pee pee in the potty 🚽 “ and she’ll walk right to the bathroom and go. She’s semi verbal . Our problem is she can’t tell us she have to use the bathroom. She’ll stand by the bathroom door 🚪 and if we aren’t paying attention she’ll have an accident . Any tips or tricks for trying to get her to tell me or show me that she has to go?

Just saw this video and noticed your comment. I don't know if this is still relevant, but maybe you can put a bell on the door, so when she has to go and you guys aren't paying attention, she can ring it. I thought of this, cause my dog had one as a puppy and learned to bump it with his nose when he had to go. Just a thought.
