Autism Potty Training | Big Update

Potty training is one of the hardest things we have had to do. There have been so many ups and downs. Having to learn the routine and voiding constantly to regressing and not voiding all day on the toilet on purpose. In this video I explain what I’m doing differently and how I’m getting Christian to be in underwear all day with minimal accidents! This is huge for us! Thanks for watching. Just wanted to say hello and let you know that along with some potty training books I read and along with your videos it has helped me come up with a great potty training routine. So, I just wanted to say thank you for all that you and your family do, you have no idea how helpful you are. My son is 8 and I started potty training him during school break this year because honestly like you mentioned everyone has to be on board. He wasn't ready, I wasn't ready, I myself had health issues and my family wasn't on board before. Sometimes you just have to wait for the right time for everyone. I also felt stressed because my son was getting older and not potty trained yet, so it was really weighing on me. My son is doing great it's only been 2 weeks now and he is doing awesome! I am planning on starting night time training soon. I am so proud of him, I knew he could do it but it was faster than I expected, but hey I will take it! I just wanted to say that I know now that things are going to happen when it's the right time. Every kiddo is different and they will be great as long as we love & support them in every way possible. If you have any advice for me regarding night time training, I welcome any advice you have! Thank you & May God bless everyone! :)

Wow that’s amazing 👏 👏!! Thank you so much for sharing this big win with me! My biggest tips for night time potty training is to stop all liquids 1-2 hours before going to sleep. Making sure to take him to the bathroom before going to sleep and as soon as he wakes up was very helpful to us. 💙

Thanks for information, it's very useful for us.My boy is non verbal severe. He is mad about the road signs. Everytime he sees a sign, he releases a vocal stim. If we go out, he runs by the road signs. He also likes numbers, car numbers, houses etc.

You could maybe try teaching him the sign language sign for potty or bathroom. Every time he goes potty have him use the sign. Soon he will associate that sign with going to the bathroom. Hopefully, he will soon be able to sign the word each time he has to go to let you know he needs to go. You're doing such a great job with him.

Congrats Christian 🥳 my son has been in undies for the past 6 months, but he is non verbal (almost 6yrs old) also so he cant tell us he needs to go, we just kept going through the routine and made him go to the potty, he eventually just started to go on his own, and is getting used to the other routines like wiping and putting his pants back on, I feel like they really just need a LOT of repetition and patience and for a little while it is definitely going to be messy there’s really not any way around it, and it’s ok if they don’t have it fully down for awhile, I’m sure it’s uncomfortable and scary for them and with no way for them to express that has to be frustrating for them but with time and a great support system like you guys he’ll get there

Kia Ora, Love 💖 your vlogs always!! Wow this vlog fills me with pure joy and I’m so excited for you all!!! This is absolutely awesome news and thank you for sharing such invaluable info. Such insight, help and true encouragement for those who know this struggle and those who are doing their best to assist their kids! I hope this channel continues to grow and thrive, especially because you are so relatable and have so much to share with others! An incredible update with hope for those trying to make potty progress. His muscles will gain strength and his awareness will grow. You are truly amazing for persevering!! This independence will make all the difference for him in the world. It took us quite awhile and I realised how difficult it was to understand the reason. To be fair I couldn’t tell him how difficult it could be changing him. We took full advantage of summer and plastic sheeting on furniture, beds, car etc and had carpet cleaning supplies at the ready. We used toilet book/simple visuals, undies ready too. Light and music toys and reward of iPad. My son Noah has food issues so alas unfortunately no food rewards. I think when we decided to use undies and comity to keep going, we kept also making progress. I completely understand the behaviours come out because our expectations and their frustration and efforts and struggle to master new skills. Accidents decreased over time and yes number two, oh my goodness especially when his dad was away, working overseas, that was at times such an effort. Though we kept going forward at times slowly but surely. I think he was scared of pooping in the toilet and of the flush, so that bit was delayed originally. My son turns 6 next month, he wears undies at night now after mastering daytime bladder control. Although we have accidents sometimes at night, though we still use protective sheets/padding and they have been our saving grace. All children are unique and I wish everyone courage and success in their potty training journey! A great journey begins with just one step. Many Blessings Beautiful Whanau from Aotearoa 🦋💜🌈🌟 Ps. ☺️ I’m Reviewing your tips for self care again too... great advice Mama! 💫

Thank you! It really is the biggest blessing to have him in undies. It really is when the time is right it will happen. I truly believe that and want other parents not to feel the weight of all the pressure of not getting it down immediately. Our children learn different and patience is key! I’m so happy to hear your kiddo has it down now. Accidents are normal, I’m going to focus on night time soon as well. 💙💙🤗

Love that Mama and you are so right... when the time is right it can begin to happen... it’s such a lot to take on and parents should not ever feel defeated, for the fact perhaps timing is just not quite right. It can and actually does take time. We often feel as parents judged and/or constantly advised regardless or our circumstances. We were fortunate despite not being able to access ABA (it’s hugely expensive and not funded here. I want to do a parents course though. I know it could help us in so many ways. Most professionals here do little more than chat to parents, about what they could do with their kids and actually do not provide one to one help with the child’s learning. Frustrating when all you here from them all is about the importance of early intervention. I feel sometimes Uu have to learn to be all the therapists. We have paid for private SLT where mostly I learnt what to do at home as at the time his sensory and transition issues were so great, lil progress could be made. He learns when and if we can find the holy grail, of what motivates him to want to learn. Trying to do our own ABA research as well, slowly and ever so surely moving forward), we had at the time some professionals who really supported us to strategise a way for when we were could really try and were ready to potty train. Confession though... please don’t judge people, with number two I washed many clothes and multiple times daily, though when I was on my own, there were a few times with no help for days/weeks, I could feel overwhelmed! My dirty lil secret... just a few times undies were disposed of. Before starting potty training I actually had no idea, that there are so many potty training songs/stories on You tube for kids. This vlog though for us as parents speaks to us and that means everything in the world! Again Thanks 💜

Good luck!!! I know it’s very very hard and bowl movements are the hardest ones especially with nonverbal kiddos. We are still having some bowel accidents from time to time because our son won’t always express a need to go he just goes number two on his undies sometimes but don’t give up hopefully with a lot of repetition and time they will get there 💙

That’s amazing!! 👏 👏 It’s hard for our kiddos to let us know when they need to pee. My nonverbal son is fully potty trained but he won’t tell me when he needs to go. He goes independently when he knows where the bathroom is and I have to guess when out in public by following his nonverbal cues.

Emmett does potty dances and touching himself more to let me know he needs to go potty. Emmett only let me know for number 2 is after he goes because he give not sign he is going number 2. He goes to potty when I go to potty. He still in pulls ups at 6 years old. I have Emmett put number 2 in potty if he goes in pull up.
