How I learned to feel Moe Norman's swing with a broomstick

Спорт

Watching Moe hit balls for the first time, all I could ask was "How can I learn to feel his swing?" This video explains how Moe had a club-to-body relationship that allowed him to repeat impact better than anyone who ever played the game.

Todd, this is one, if not THE most insightful videos that you have done relative to club plane. Forget about “guessing” HOW to take the club back or even your drill with pointing the club at a ball six feet behind and one foot in during the backswing. Simply replicate the feeling of the broomstick in contact with the lead side of the body going back five feet and then hinging the wrists to shoulder height. Proper and on-plane backswing ACCOMPLISHED!! This video explains and shows how. I especially like unhinging the writs at the top as a checkpoint. THANK YOU!!!

When I started playing golf regularly back in the 90's, my drives were dead straight or with a slight draw, but I held the club "funny" compared to everyone else. I didn't play often, but I usually played bogey golf. I listened to others" comments, read some articles to learn the "proper" way to swing and everything went down the toilet! I quit playing for many years and have recently found your videos and others that spoke of Moe Norman. I never knew there was a one plane swing or a two plane swing until last week. What I realized was that, years ago, my "funny" swing was a one plane swing. It feels like an awakening. I've ordered your instructional video and am so excited to get started once everything opens up again. Thanks for the inspiration! Mark, from Vancouver Island, Canada

I started playing in 2018. I was inadvertently swinging (almost) like Moe. I started listening to other people’s instruction and jeers on “proper” form. I immediately began to struggle with consistency trying to look like the pros. Same exact thing happened to me in basketball. I was a natural shooter and became an average shooter after listening to form critique. After watching these videos I’m dropping what I’ve been told and following my instinct and using moe as a template. My best hits felt like “nothing” for over 300yrds. Using the popular swing methods I have to put everything into my swing for a like drive and it’s rarely straight. Thanx for the videos

But now I’m swinging again with easy sissy swings with single plane, and I can drive 175-200 yards consistently, and straight. Also, I lost about 50 lbs and got off sugar, and that helped my osteoarthritis A LOT. I wish you all the best!

When I discovered you and learned more about Moe Norman, BOOM! Single plain swing is brilliant! I’m sticking with it. Also, what I leaned from Moe Norman, you don’t have to look good on the tee to hit good. Hit good to look good. Thank you for sharing GB-Striker’s videos Sir.

Thanks for this simplified explanation! I have a large property and am able to go outside and try golf swing tips immediately. Just went outside and focused on starting my swing with the club pointing left of my belly button like you diagrammed, with the club head a foot behind the ball. Took it back with my usual grip and stance and returned it pointing a little below that point. Unbelievable, nothing but dead straight shots hammered away from my club head. Todd, this might be the best secret of great golf, even if you don't emulate Moe with your hand sway from your body!

I COMPLETELY AGREE with your statement "the center of rotation is the lead side of the body" !! I have discovered a few months ago that if my mental image of my swing is a rotation around a line going from my lead foot to my lead shoulder, I get all the sudden easy and consistent strikes. I did not know, untill I watched your video, if I was right, but this simple swing thought (rotate around lead side) helped me a lot in my game. It produces straight shots or slight draws. Thanks a lot for this confirmation !

I think it is a great tribute too Mo that someone has taken Mo's swing seriously and is attempting to encourage others too swing like Mo! Thank you so much Matt for being that someone! Mo was a great, sorry- a fantastic striker of the ball and there was no pro who could strike the ball so straight, not even Tiger! He won more tournaments and broke many course records, so that tells us we are ALL swinging improper! I have mastered the wedges and irons, but am still a bit off the mark with the driver, but I have learned a lot from your videos Matt, many thanks for your time and input, I am a pensioner and this swing of Mo's has really eased my back pain!

Todd this is the best video I have seen about how to understand, translate and feel your own natural golf swing. I will also say this... I have only just started back playing golf this year and prior I was only an occasional social golf player, but the bug has bitten me and I fully into it now. Having said that my biggest issue was slicing, so like everyone else I went and got a lesson and yes it helped, but it was complicated and it still didn't feel natural and I would still slice it. Today is the 30th September 2019. After watching your videos and a few others on Moe Norman on Friday the 27th September 2019 I thought I would go out and give this a go on Saturday 28th September 2019. I found it bit strange for the first 60 or so balls on the range, but something started to change after I hit about 80 balls. Then I decided I would hit another 120 balls with the driver only and I would use my alignment sticks to position my feet the tee and the rest of my body each time so I could make sure I was postponing in the same way every single time. I was really shocked I didn't hit any slices at all. I felt like I had way more power and control than I have ever felt before and I would have probably only hit 15 balls out of the target range of a fairway. the rest went straight down the middle. Also my right arm has been working through some golfers elbow and it wasn't even sore after hitting some 230 balls. Conclusions 1) Finding your now natural golf swing is critical if your going to play the hardest ball game in the world. 2) if your getting golfers elbow or other parts of your body are sore after playing golf then your not working with the natural biomechanics of your body and its telling you that your not. 3) Being pedantic and exact about setup is worth the effort as your going to be hitting the ball where you want more often and that = fun and satisfaction. 4) When you start to discover and embrace your own natural swing you will hit not only great shots, but I would say some magnificent shots. I was stunned as to the difference of some of my shots with the driver... incredible... and this is only after one practice session. So today I went out and practiced again and this time I was able to translate the same results to my 7 iron and again I was amazed at the power, control and accuracy I was getting. I am sold on the Moe Norman natural swing. Completely sold on it. Thank you so much for the videos. I am in Australia and there is no-one teaching like you are here in Perth, not that I know of anyway.

This is a excellent teaching. I don't hear it anywhere. To do this you have to make sure your weight stays on that inside right foot. Ken Venturi use to put a wedge in his right shoe. That had to feel funny walking around the course. I guess whatever works. I use to struggle with hooking. I know why know. My hips would move back a little and rotate from there. Too bad I am learning about this at 64 yrs old. Great video!

OMG!! I started by watching your 1:06 minute video, and then this one came up. It greatly clarified a basic swing principal of this swing. So much so that I had to stand up in my living room and try the swing (in slow motion) with my driver, hybrid, and 5 iron. OMG (again) because it seems to work perfectly as to club head path into the ball, and contact point into the ball. Can this be real? Has to be because of all the great shots you hit in the first video. I can't get to the range for a couple of days, but I have no choice but to try this swing!! I have subscribed to your channel, and am going to watch more of your videos. Thanks so much!

Former baseball player, frustrated as all get-out every single time I’ve tried hitting a golf ball. Almost always slices like crazy. Watched one of these videos randomly the other night, went out yesterday and the driving range was closed for maintenance. I was bummed, but I decided to pitch instead. I’ve maybe hit 500 wedges in my lifetime, 15 or so have been straight. I hit 15 wedges using this method (all my son would allow as my partner), and they were the best 15 golf shots I’ve ever hit. Every single one straighter than my regular slices. 6 of 15 within 5 feet of each other. Another 6 within 15-20 feet or so. The other 3 were straight, but I got a little excited and launched them farther. I am hooked and so energized for golf now!

A little deep and technical when watching for the first time, but the lead side club to swing plane, and the club going on the inside on the backswing becomes clearer after watching two or more times. The highlight for me was Todds’ explanation as to why Moe always grounded the club way behind the ball at address, and how that distance disappeared at impact due to body rotation and maintaining the direct line of the lead arm to the club shaft. Very interesting!

Hi i would like to share my thoughts with you. i'm 52 years old playing golf for 17 years and watching a lot of golf tips on youtube .watching Moe Norman's swing i can see 3 elements he has in his swing 1- one peace take away 2 - he is fully hinge his wrist 3 - he start the downswing with his lower body (left foot). Although his swing seems easier to learn i thing that most amateurs golfers and myself struggle the most is to achieve those 3 essential elements that without them it's very difficult to swing freely, one plain or two plain those 3 elements are against your natural instincts, unless you are a full time golfer it's very hard to achieve .

A couple of weeks ago I was doing some work with the “broomstick” and it dawned on me to try and hold the pivot point relationship throughout the chip. The difference has been dramatic. Chunking was my problem and it has completely stopped. I am gradually getting confident chipping off tight lies and starting to get good distance control and most importantly up and downs. My swing thought is “maintain the lead wrist angle and forward shaft lean and keep the butt of the club pointing to the pivot point”. I also tend to set up with the club head further behind the ball than previously. I am very excited to tell you I won my first competition on Saturday. Thank you for all the great teaching you have given me and the Graves Golf members. It has been hard work to make the changes but love the way I am playing now.

Hi Doug...how is it Down Under? Regarding Chipping EXACTLY!!! See, the hands are always in a position to lead whether you are chipping or hitting full shots. Good to hear from you.

So I have been watching your videos, and found them very fascinating. It seemed that you were basically describing my swing. The extended arms, the lower back swing. So I tried to recreate some of the things you talked about that were somewhat different than mine. The grip and the alignment of the club. The tilted shoulders. I immediately noticed that I could hit a chip shot the way it is supposed to go. I could hit my 3 wood again. My driver had a slight fade, when I normally have a slight draw...guess I need to work on that ...but it was only the first night I tried it

Hey Todd, I just rewatched this video tonight after viewing today’s putting video. It came at exactly the right time for me! I only discovered your brilliance a couple of months ago (I guess quarantine hasn’t been ALL bad) and it has resulted in immediate improvement- specifically, with my consistency. I have struggled with the 16-20* spine tilt at address. I have found that my trajectory, with all clubs, is higher than ideal. This video made me question where my hands are at impact and viola! I will be practicing with a broom to dial in that forward shaft lean until AFTER impact. I’m looking forward to the results. As I have told you several times already, THANK YOU for your work. You are growing the game and making it more fun for so many people. Happy New Year, sir. Keep it coming, please 👍🏻

I would say he is not maintaining much leverage coming down into impact but releasing it and throwing it away, and he is extremely good at it. Great explanation of the left side relationship to the swing release point, that’s why swinging the club with your left hand/arm only can help sync up your swing Cheers

What I find most amazing about Moe’s swing is how far forward he gets his hips at impact relative to address position

Agree. And it practically impossible for a mere mortal to have hands ahead of the clubshaft at impact when the ball is so far ahead. That is so much hip movement and moving parts, confusing for sure

Thanks for this great breakdown of the swing------no wonder I've never taken a divot except for behind the ball. Hopefully, now I'll take the divot after hitting the ball, compress it for distance.

Thanks this video was very helpful. Keeping the shaft to the outside of my left side at impact is good cure for my hand flipping thru impact. It also promotes forward shaft lean at impact.
