@AlexElliottGolf, carefull when you mention Moe Norman, I tried going with his philosophy, when I started 10 months ago, before I "discovered my swing" and you need to explain to people that Moe Norman was different. Starting stance, distance to the ball, rotation to strike the ball. In my experience the swings feel diferent and in order to do "Moe Norman" swing you will destroy your "Normal Swing". Vice versa is also true. So I would suggest a disclaimer for people to try to mimic this drill specificaly... not Moe Norman. Moe´s swing is a product of hard work and genious. Shame there is almost no coaches teaching it. Keep up the good work Alex, love your videos.

@@kindered Moe's Master Move was his way of saying start your downswing in a clockwise rotation and you'll automatically shallow the club and develop and inside to inside swing. Every person has to develop then their face squaring technique. Moe's gift to us was the clockwise rotation of the right hand, the right wrist, and the right shoulder external rotation to start the down swing. 99.9% of pros do this, almost imperceptibly unfortunately. Learn also the biomechanist tip on dropping the center of mass of the golf club below the hand path. It's part of squaring, part of automatic shaft lean, and part of low angle of attack.

Excellent! Practicing the vertical drop brings the right shoulder joint down it maximum of twenty degrees rotation clockwise as opposed to going OTT that brings the right shoulder up to its maximum twenty degrees rotation counterclockwise. Both Moe Norman and Ben Hogan felt their heavy buttocks as if they were sitting on a stool that gave them both springy lateral knees that were instrumental for their upper body swing giving them both the vertical drop necessary that shallowed their clubs back to its original plane of action to strike directly through the ball. Cheers 🥂👍😊👌

I also have adopted the Graves Golf single-plane swing over the past 2.5 years with some success. They teach that in the set-up the left arm is above the right in the down-the-line view because of side tilt. This swing thought that Alex is giving completes the thought of maintaining that orientation thru the transition and downswing as well. I love it!

  • @rickstevens9628

I discovered the Moe Norman master move a few months ago. If you move into his Master Move, you'd say no one can hit a ball from there i.e. right arm lower than left, left hand higher than the right on the handle and right elbow into your side or in front of right hip. But, if you take that Master Move back to the top and then down into the Master Move and do that a few times, that's the arc of the hand path down and you begin the downswing with a clockwise motion. The same clockwise motion of pro golfers. You also feel the right shoulder external rotation, you feel the elbow leading the swing automatically, you feel the automatic shallowing of the club behind you, almost automatic shaft lean after squaring, and maybe more importantly, you feel what Sasho MacKenzie, bio mechanist, says about having the center of mass of the golf club must drop below the hand path to facilitate squaring of the face automatically. Moe’s Vertical Drop behind him was shallowing and Sasho’s dropping the center of mass below the hand path. Getting the feel is tough for amateurs, but Moe showed us the way years and years ago. It's a crying shame, especially for me wasting 50 years on a counter-clockwise swing, that more people didn't show us this years ago. I applaud you for leading us out of the wilderness, and inconsistent golf.

I’ve watched Moe for years, but never quite mastered his technique until I recently had a hip replacement, and was diagnosed with severe carpel tunnel syndrome in my right hand which caused me difficulty in gripping the club other than with a baseball grip. With this in place “Moes” action became 2nd nature. My iron striking has gone from a typical 12 handicap to superb, I recently scored 1 over par on tricky par 3 course with holes varying from 90yds to 165yds and a single Par 4.

Hi Alex. Excellent! You are right! This absolutely stops overactive hips on the spot as long as one learns how to preset their athletic stance with a heavy buttocks and springy knees as Ben Hogan taught on page 55 of his 5 lessons Practicing the vertical drop as you have brilliantly shown us brings our right shoulder joint down it maximum of twenty degrees rotation clockwise as opposed to going OTT that brings the right shoulder up to its maximum twenty degrees rotation counterclockwise. Back in 2008-2011 I worked as a starter and the pros were part of the Todd Graves franchise and teaching Moe’s single plane swing. Learning from them how to swing like Moe made me realize how much starting the downswing by moving and accelerating body and arm mass down and toward target with side bending an letting the club force to fully release and whip the hands thumbs down before impact increases club head speed and control of the club face. What most don’t notice which is the key, due to his unconventional club behind and inside starting position is that he first aligned the club face by putting body and hands (with full ulnar deviatIon) where he wanted them at impact / ball release off the face (at target).

I don't know if this feeling I'm working on is right or not, but aims the same goal in the transition. What I look is to "invert" the hands positions (on top of the backswing the trail hand is "on top" of the lead one) but using the body movement, this implies to roll the lead hip and tilt and roll the torso, to get the lead hand on top of the trailer, ready to discharge thru the ball. Thanks a lot for your videos, Alex and greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷

Alex, I related to you earlier about Moe and Sasho MacKenzie's advice on the downswing. You get it, but still don't refer to the start of the downswing being a clockwise motion of the right hand, right wrist, and right shoulder external rotation. That's the key. But I've also figured out why that's necessary to golf and why the pros are better than we are. Sasho MacKenzie's scientific knowledge that the center of mass of the club should drop below the hand path to facilitate squaring is what Moe Norman gave us with his Master Move, and it's automatic shallowing and vertical drop behind us. Now, here's why starting the downswing in a clockwise motion is required,......................The whole difference here is that "the golf club never drops below the hand path when you don’t start the downswing in a clockwise rotation", and you never realize the proper hand path and angle-of-attack into the ball that the pros enjoy.

  • @MrWastingmytime59

The thing about Moe's swing is that it is built on a foundation of the set-up, i.e. a lot of tilt to the right, ulnar deviated left hand, etc. That sets you up for mechanics like the one you're describing in the video, but they happen somewhat naturally if the set-up is correct. Pulling out just one of Moe's moves without the set-up components is missing the bigger picture.

  • @TheHawkwatch

His statement regarding the master move is “the lateral shot and the vertical drop”. I wouldn’t run off with this with out creating synchronized motion between the LATERAL SHOFT and the VERTICAL DROP.

The problem with this tip is that its exaggerated so much the club gets behind the hands and the body and most people hit a right shot and inevitably start fiddling around with the wrists. The key actually is to let the club head start the downswing at the same time as the body so the hands are with you body.

  • @robsaxepga

I agree with your assertion that the bulk of golf instruction is about "pressuring the ground" or otherwise completely unproductive lower-body action, completely ignoring the fact that the arms of most amateurs are completely broken down at either the top or at impact. No amount of lower body work will improve any swing if the arms and hands are doing the wrong thing. Moe knew it, and the best players know it. Just another crappy golf instruction trend. Great video!

@@AlexElliottGolf will do. I guess today's tip is probably helpful here. I think I'm probably throwing my hands out towards the ball too much causing a toe strike.

Ben Hogan said a straight shot was an accident Moe Norman said come watch me hit 100+ accidents .....❤

You need to watch more of Moe’s lessons, the master move was the relationship of the lead arm and the trail elbow with the trail elbow being way underneath the lead arm - which he said was the same ‘secret’ as Hogan had - and Hogan didn’t drop the club like this, just had a similar lead arm/trail elbow relationship (see kzread.infoFOJGxGPA4vU?si=xpEP-9M86NDycB-2 for Moe and kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYWl06hqhavPYZc.htmlsi=7l5oCzV9CGXR9OQI for Hogan). The reason it felt like a drop and Moe didn’t use his hips was that he was so far away from the ball - using his hips was impossible without missing the ball. And then when you look at your demo swing in slow motion you see that you do the same swing as you normally do, with the transition being lead by the lower/body and hips before the backswing has fully completed - same as every decent golfer and not doing Moe’s move or what you prescribe at all. The reason the tip seems to work is it gives the receiver one clear swing thought to concentrate on, which is often the case with most ‘tips’. It normally takes a fair bit of practise to actually make a change, with the required feeling being a massive overemphasis of the movement to start with. Witness some of the extreme practise moves you see pro’s often make.

IMO this is much easier to do when you incorporate the other things Moe did such as having the left arm and shaft forming a straight line at address, keeping both heels down on backswing and at impact, and placing the driver a foot behind the ball at address.

It's cause and effect, it's about the fold and the crease you create..once you fold, the crease makes a move at the ball..which cause the body to drop , which causes the club to get slightly behind and forced though by retardation of the motion of the hips into a braced left side

Wow, at 4:09 and 5:09 you REALLY get a huge wrist cock with delayed clubhead release until your clubshaft is parallel with the ground - so close to impact but a blink of the eye before impact you fully extend your right elbow to COMPLETELY straighten and extend your right arm at impact for fantastic clubhead speed. Even viewing your slow motion shot, I love to press the "Gear" icon and change the Playback speed to .25 to study your awesome swing dynamics! Many thanks Alex.

I guess another way to describe this "feeling" while in your swing is to try and hit yourself in ypur rear ankle on the way to the ball. You can't hit yourself in the rear ankle. Its essentially physically impossible. But if you try, it will set your body, hand and club in the proper swing path.

In the drill you dropped your right hip very early (3:19). When you you smoked the shot, your right hip stayed high (3:48). You need to clear the left hip away from the ball and not dip the right hip too early. So flatten the swing but don’t do it at the expense of dropping the right hip early.

Don't sway back doing the drill or in your swing. At least 60/40 percent on lead side. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you took Jack Nicklaus in 1962, brought him to the 2023, gave him a modern driver and golf ball, he would be the longest player on tour. Just look at video of his swing back then. Amazing. What I'm really getting at is I don't think there is some modern version of the swing that is better than the classic swing. I think what's important is what works best for each individual. Just an opinion.

That move is only for one plane swings so be careful.. the only drill moe did that can help normal golfers is the placing of the clubhead in centre of stance for all clubs to stay in the turn

Alex as you are aware Moe Norman was to say the least eccentric and so are most of his drills yes they worked for Moe but so did Trevino,s work for Trevino also a point all to often missed is Moe Norman was at best 5,6” and stocky so his method is unlikely to suit all similarly Faldo,s method / technique is not for the Ben Hogans of this world it’s horses for courses , your initial Moe Norman set up would for 90% of recreational golfers have them block it miles right .
