This just how I do it - there are MANY other ways but this seems to work best for me...

Question, some of the grains look long and stringy, as opposed to pelletized, because of the way they were pushed through the screen. Does this affect in any way the effectiveness of the burn? Also what is the grain size? I'm an amateur, but most of these vids have guys making 2F-3F grained powder. Yet they never do a close up like you did (thanks for that, btw.)

If I remember correctly I think it ended up approx 3fg. The longer grains break up after it dries - sometimes I will screen it again to remove larger grains. As far as burn rate yes different sized grains burn different. If your want to use for fireworks Skylighter has a chart that gives grain sizes & uses

Corrections what you are demonstrating here is actually" corning" not gaining nor granulating this is 15 to 16 TH century corned powder. Grained or granulated powder is 18 TH century up to modern day black powder and requires compression into cakes under high pressure and then grinding into grains of different sizes such as FFg or FFFg as needed. Also you will never make a very good powder with pine charcoal with the exception of balsa pine, willow or grape vine is recommended with a few others.

donald barnett I’m glad you bring up the FFG and the FFFG. I’ve recently been very interested in making my own black powder. The one question that I can’t seem to find answers for is how do you make and separate FFG from FFFG. Also I see that you mentioned about compression. I’ve seen a couple videos were people compress the powder very hard with their palms to make the pucks or cakes as you mentioned. What I was wondering is if you can make a compression Device to help really compress the powder, would this work? If you really compress the powder, does it help with the granular process? Thank you for any insight to this

Corning is done after its pressed into pucks under great pressures... Then it is granulated... I skipped the corning process since ive been doing it this way for MANY years and works great for my purpose... And yes pine charcoal makes fantastic BP if done right... In all my burn test even on tissue paper its left zero burns or char...
