    I enjoyed this video & learned a lot. Thanks Young. I came back playing after an 8 year hiatus. I had played real golf for 32 yrs when starting WGT. I was laid off from my job, & had lots of time, but no money to play golf, so WGT became my replacement. When I stopped WGT, I was at level 41, Tour Pro, with a 71.6 s.a. The only aid I enlisted was paper ruler I made & taped on my screen. That was replaced with a virtual ruler. I know that it was my real golf experience that helped me to accomplish my WGT numbers. In real golf, I was a 9 Hdcp. In layman terms, I shot 9 over par for 18 holes. I'm a fierce competitor & want to compete with the big dogs & I know I need math to get me there. I don't clearly understand one area. The divisor you employ with the head & tail wind comes from the angle of the wind direction. I understand that a circle is used & in general it's split vertically down the middle with the decimals .15 & .50 on each side. I know that 9 & 3 o'clock are .15 & .50 are 1/8th of 12, 3, 6, & 9 on a clock face. I'm not clear how you got .20, .45, & .85? The 3rd hole you used .20 I saw the wind pointing at the 16th minute. Is the 12 & 6 directions both .90? I don't think zero would be a divisor, being the force of the wind has the strongest effect on the ball in those directions. Please help & thank you in advance. My email is PinseekerPDX@gmail.com

    This is a great video on explaining things Jason! Question on the 180 & 225 numbers.........were these derived based on your clubs and an upgraded ball? / Will they need to be adjusted to a players setup or should they be common across the board?

    Jason when you use this %'s of wind to calculate distance , are you converting what the angle is to what % of a right triangle that translates into ( using trig ) to use as your figure ? Or is it truly an estimate / "feel" based on your experience ? ? i.e. a wind angle of 30 degrees is 25% , etc ?

Would you list the percentages for me in say 5 minute increments. Thanks

  • @graymouser5609

    @graymouser5609

    So, the way he explained it was 100% equals any quarter hour (say 12-3, or 3-6...). Each minute increment then is 100% divided by 15 minutes in the quarter hour, or just around 6.66% per minute and, thus, 33% for 5 minutes. A simpler calc would have been, in hindsight, 100%/3 = 33%, given there are three 5 minute intervals in the quarter hour...LOL (at myself)

    A few questions regarding the wind calc (they all are based on the light to moderate winds - heavy winds are a whole other can of worms for me!): 1. When you come up with a fraction for the amount of head or tail wind, are you trying to estimate the sine of the angle between a full side wind and the wind direction shown or the angle as a percent of 90 deg? I assume it is the angle as a percent (since Hole #1 looked like a 45 deg angle and the sine would be .71). 2. Hole #2 looked like a very slight headwind yet you used the factor of 225 for a tail wind. It makes less difference for winds very close to a full side wind, but just curious about the factor. 3. Can I assume you ignore distance effects for full side winds? (seems logical) 4. I noticed that you were using an on-screen protractor for a while (I even asked about it) but now you seem to be using the calc method described in this video on more recent play. Does this method give better results? I wonder because I estimate the angle from 0 to 360 degrees (clockwise from top - full tailwind) and base the distance and drift calcs on that number. You certainly get better results than I do, but I will compare this method to what I am doing - I think I am not handling the differences in head and tail wind factors properly. Your drift calcs and ruler have helped me a lot and I only made one mod to that process to account for spin percent. (I use 80% of the predicted drift for full backspin or full topspin, and proportionately up to 100% predicted drift for no spin.) Now if I can just learn the different quirks for each course and each hole!! That is taking some time! Thanks - you are generous in helping the community.

  • @Young46

    @Young46

    Estimating the % not the SIN. Side winds are tricky but you do have to take them into account. Used the protractor but felt like it took too long and threw me off rhythm so I started using the calculator instead.

    Hi Young46. You lost me in the end. Can you finish the caculation? 97(distance)*6(Wind)=582 - (225(headwind)/0.5(50%degree))=450 - 582/450=1.29 - 1.29-97(distance)= -95.7 - Here im lost.

    I just realized I didn't proofread my reply I left 3 weeks ago. I'm notorious for fat fingering adjacent keys when typing. I believe I figured it out. I've been trying it & it seems to be working. I say seems because occasionally it doesn't work. I think my inability to ding or come close is the cause, Lol. Here it is. On approach shots, or any shot requiring precision, elevation will affect the actual distance to your target. When the target is above your position, the actual distance is more, so you'll need use a longer club. Conversely, if the target is below you, use a shorter club. You probably know that, but I'm not gonna assume you do. Anyway. The elevation variable is divided by a divisor. I guessed it as being 2 or 3 & the result is either added or subtracted from the distance result after accounting the wind. Which one to use depends on lots of situations, such as how high or low it is. I use 2 when it's a lot higher, because higher makes the distance longer requiring more club. Ex. say it's 35 feet up like the 2nd shot on the 524 yd par 5, 6th on Pebble Beach. Dividing 35 by 2 is 17.5, Where as dividing by 3 is 11.66, which may not be enough. 6 yds is a lot to be short or long. That really isn't a good hole as an example because the approach has a lot of roll. Anyway you'd add it for higher & deduct when it's lower. The take is, I go by my gut feeling. Unless Young 46, Jason replies, give it a twirl, tweak it & see the result. I could be wrong, but at least you can be using the formula in the meantime. Cheers

    I don’t know. I’ve been playing this game almost since day one and that sounds like a lot of work. I mean all that math and honestly your results aren’t significantly(if any) better than mine. It’s a game ...”randomly” generated code. And when the game wants to cheat you(steal a ball, mess the meter) it will. I’m not trying to dis the way you enjoy the game but that’s a lot of effort for the average or even above average player. Like you said, a good portion is feel and you just need to play to learn that. Good luck.

I agree with most here that during live play there is little to no time for any of this, but it is excellent information for practice and solo play where there is no shot clock. I am not looking for preciseness anyway - simply playing hand grenades and trying to get close enough to make the putts something other than white knuckle affairs.

NO shaping of the ball AT ALL ....probably the biggest thing a golfer can learn to increase his skill in golf...when i say golf im referring to the real thing not wgt lol....many of the physics of wgt does not match reality...probably the biggest one that chaps my ass (out side of the lack of draw and fade) is its EASIER to stick a elavated green than harder becuse the green is higher into the arc of the ball and spin begins at contact so a higher elavation the ball has much more spin. Dont even get me started on greenside 🤨
