From the time I was about seven or eight unto high school I was expected to help my grandpa in his garage where he built horse trailers or at the apartments doing remodeling. On the most part it was usually a lot of fun (plus grandma would pay me on the sly:-). It was always hold this or find that! When I was in my mid 20's I started my own print shop in my basement which eventually grew unto 15 to 20 employees. That's when I realized how much I learned from Grandma and Grandpa. Throughout their lives, I never let them forget how much they taught me by mistake. I eventually told Grandpa that Grandma paid me and he just laughed and said, "I figured that because you were always so eager to help." They were parents to me and I'll be forever grateful for how they helped me. I'm sure your children will look back some day and feel the same! Great job your doing Ray. If your going on the road you might consider going Solar for some things. If so you will want to leave some space for the batteries! They take up a lot of room. I also wanted to say that I've known Ray for around 25 yrs and he's a great guy. He and his wonderful family are just what you see, excellent people, very loveable. As you can see in the video's, Rays best quality is he loves to laugh, and his wife and kids are jewels. Keep up the good work.

Many KZread creators are good because of their OCD/perfectionist nature. It’s not a criticism, just an observation. I’m sure I’d be the same way. I’m guessing my goal would be to create my best product in the least amount of time possible... while at the same time battling the task of capturing the work on video. This would definitely be a challenge. I say this because it’s really great to see someone working through these challenges while at the same time involving others in the process... especially your kids. This definitely doesn’t make things easier but your kids will always remember these times. You’re giving Bart a new life but he won’t live forever. The skills and the experience you give your kids can live on for generations. Good for you! This is truly sizing up to be one of my favorite KZread builds. Keep up the great work!

Nice Work..... I built 3 slides in my MCI bus conversion 3 years ago except I used a cable system to power them called Accu-Slide, I looked at the rack system and really liked it but had difficulty sourcing them and the cable system came up so I went that way, I think your system is a little better, the cables work fine but I think the rack system is a little more precise, I have a full video series on my channel if you are interested ... again, nice work, I'm interested to follow your progress...

Omg! Sir...I applaud you! I've been searching for a way to engineer a manual system for slideouts and have been searching and racking my brain for months! Your design is the definition of simplistic! I didn't want to do a hydraulic system or cable actuated system as that just things that will fail long before a manual system. @@5TonsofDiscovery I certainly will! One question though. Where did you source your racks from? I just contacted McMaster-Carr yesterday and am probably going with them. I'm going to order the gear assembly from Amazon but replaced the drive gear as I want to make sure I match the gear and rack so there aren't any premature wear issues down the line. I'm just curious where you found yours as you said you ordered the wrong one a couple time(hence me replacing the gear lol).

I actually couldn’t get the correct gear rack from McMaster Carr. So what I did is contacted Lippert directly and ordered the gear rack from them. Great work! Motorized would be nice but in the meantime you could weld a bolt into that shaft and have the option of using your new makita impact to open and close it. Just in case you still need some purchase justification for the wife ;) Looking forward to the next upload.

I don’t think they make it in aluminum but I don’t know 100%. Slide outs will add some nice space to your boat!

Hi! The material I have chosen have almost no deflection. The slide out move 3’. I could have gone farther. The slide outs are probably 600 lbs on each roller( being conservative) so total 1800 lbs per slide outs. I’ve been very happy with how it’s working out!

Consider A wiper motor to a gear reducer with some limit switches and mechanize the slideout, with your skills I'm sure you will be able to cobble up something that will work. Enjoyed watching your little people acquire new-found skills, that's how it's done give them guidance set them free to learn on there own but keep an eye from a distance. I purchased a tarp motor that 90-1 ratio for a prototype leveling jack, this is very powerful, cost around 125 dollars, should work for you if you'd like to go powe someday

Wanna do another one? Will be guinea pig here....doesn't have to be able to handle constant travel as I intend to plant it somewhere. Bought fifth wheel sight unseen and did'nt realize it had no slide. !999 trail lite 5270 in perfect condition but I'm a tad claustrophobic. Will do what I can with guidance and tools...but I may have to cut a hole in it anyway so here ya go!

Yeah, great idea, !!!! how bout you come to Pueblo Colorado to build mine on my flat bed trailer I'm going to buy, & build a small cabin on, but I want them on but sides of the trailer, well it would be nice, but disability don't pay you enough to enjoy the finer things in life, so I'll just have to settle for the small cabin on the trailer

Well, sounds like you have a good plan! Having 5 of us we needed the extra width, but for 1-2 person, slide outs aren't necessary! We just got back on the road after having some health complications so I'm enjoying this time with my family and not working on another project!

With a little bit of redesign on the inside rollers and if you had a way to lock the walls together so that it wasn’t bouncing, it could potentially work.

I am building a camper trailer and I want to add 2 slide-outs like you are doing in this video. I have looked for all of the parts you listed, but I am having a problem finding the 125774 Gear rack 48x.5x5 20 PA/ 10 DP. I want to make sure I get the right rack for the slide-out gear. Can you tell me where you got that?

A word of caution.....start managing weight now, or this will become 10 Tons of discovery. You’re using some really heavy duty materials in that frame.....I’m not saying that you’re wrong to do so, but if you approach the whole build with a zero deflection, maximum strength approach you’ll end up extremely top heavy. I, like many folks, tend to overbuild and I’ve worked hard over the years to skinny down my designs. So far I haven’t run across a bad result with the lighter approach. Love the build, keep up the good work.

Make life easier. Install an electric motor. DC so you can reverse it

Cool design! You could add an electric motor when you get tired of hand cranking the slides! Is there a motor that is both electric and a manual bypass?

This was a very difficult thing for me to locate So my pain is your gain! It turns out that gear rack is a custom item but Lippert components has them. After many phone calls I finally got through and saved the item #125774 Gear rack 48x.5x.5 20 PA/10 DP. Lippert Components # 574-537-8900 These are compatible with the rolling bearing gear I left a link in the description. It was also very affordable!

Is there anything in the tube to help the gear track from rubbing the outer tube? Is it metal to metal? If so, now that you are using it, does it give you any problems? You have overlooked the friction caused by the extended slide on the inboard end of the 2" slide structure . No roller ?

Can I ask where you ended up finding the gear rack? Or at least if you remember the teeth dimensions; like Pressure Angle, Diametral pitch etc. I’m doing pretty much this same exact build, with the same Lippert rollers and 2”x2” with 3/8” barstock on the one side

Hows dose the floor/pullout mount to that .?

Will they need to be greased or will that just be a magnet for dirt and grit? If not greased, how will you avoid having them freeze up from rust?

I have seen slide outs using a light spray on grease. When traveling down the road, they are closed which keeps water off them for the most part.

Sorry for the late response. Been having issues with infection from a broken leg surgery! The rollers I have a link to it on the description called Lippert slide out gear. And the track is a custom item from Lippert. Item #125774 gear rack 48x.5x.5 20 PA/10 DP Lippert # 574 537 8900 Hope that helps!

@@5TonsofDiscovery Not exactly what I was asking but good one. I was referring to the innermost edge is not attached to the track in any way. This could cause a pinching on the inner side when extended out. I was asking about how you're going to fix the unsupported side.

If I understand your question correctly, on the innermost side of the slide outs is resting on rollers along the bottom. They roll on the floor as you move the slide out in and out. On the mechanical frame inside are bearings and HDPE to eliminate friction. Let me know if that answers your question. I’ll try to do a video on it soon!

I am using some teflon wheels for the inside. You could design something different, which I would probably do.

Most of the weight is on the front bearings. There is a set of bearings in the rear on the top. And a piece of HDPE on the bottom as a guide slide.

@@5TonsofDiscovery Awesome, did you encounter any sagging? I'm designing a similar 12'x3' slide but opted for 3x3x1/4". Looks like 2x2 would be plenty... My plan was to have some out-rigger feet to support the slide if it felt "unstable" once we are docked.

Put a motor on the end of the shaft so you can use a motor for the bump outs

So there's only one weel or gear at the front, so in the back it's metal on metal ? I'm having a lot of trouble with these concepts, it's a hard thing guys

Thank you @@5TonsofDiscovery, I was wondering about this myself! I wonder if you could put thread inserts on the nut side of the tube and Loctite them in rather than tack the bolt? BTW, totally stealing this brilliant idea on the slide outs! I want to try and change the design to be hidden by a floor under them as well. Also, it melted my heart to watch your wife helping and have that huge grin! You are a very lucky man!

I am interested to see if anybody is using pneumatic actuators instead of the mechanical mtr\gear type. I am considering building a slide-out to support a ~6'ft hide-a-bed/couch in my 16'ft all-aluminum box (think U-Haul).

@@5TonsofDiscovery My box (Bay Bridge) is all aluminum, U-Haul's are plywood sides (at least). I like mine better.

@@5TonsofDiscovery Did you consider pneumatic rams? If not why? Most rigs carry an air compressor for tires if not airbags. I know enough about pneumatics to know that equal extension etraction might be a problem without fancy sensor measurement. btw....I spent many years watching my father work (mostly carpentry) fetching him coffee and cigs....he never taught me or let me do anything. Stand and watch. I applaud you for letting your children participate hands-on. They will remember and learn from that. Seems to me that's the real joy of being a parent. To this day I don't understand why my parents had children other than biology taking it's course.

@@Mark-gg6iy I didn’t put much consideration in the pneumatic because I didn’t know a lot about it. Its not always “convenient” to have the kids “help” but long term in life it’s what’s important for them and us as a family! I’m sorry you weren’t able to experience that with your father.

I don't think welding the flat bar properly to the square tube is going to cause enough of an issue. Maybe a tiny bit, but you're going to grease it I assume anyway, it will wear as much as it needs to. I would be much more concerned with not getting the holes lined up properly and causing problems that way.

It’s been working out fantastic so far! I have not greased up yet as it’s not touching anywhere!

Pretty much how I operate! And worth buying good quality!

I saw those younguns working and I thought child labour But they where enjoying what they where doing I had my 5 year old on a building job and he insisted on helping with knocking gib nails in so I gave him a job under the stairs he did 21 nails in 300mm he loved it We where the only ones on the job Brill job

Couldn't you have just welded some motorcycle chain to that shaft... yes it would be a little more expensive but instead of waiting for that other thing...

I think its a great idea. If I do it again, I may incorporate that. I could even do an easy gear reduction with motorcycle chain. Thanks for the comment.

Just a little concern I had immediately upon seeing the young girl with the drill press. Long hair and drill presses do not mix! Otherwise, thanks for your video.
