Long post, but helpful: With the sinking funds, gather a list of sinking funds that are your “for sure” items throughout the year. Ski pass, Christmas, etc. add them all up. So if they all totaled $1,800. Then you divide that by 12 and save that much every month all year. If you do it with everything you can think of for the whole year, it smooths out your spending for the year. That way, when you make extra money, you don’t have to think about what you “should” do with it, you know everything else is covered and you know what it truly “extra”. Then you can decide what you want to do with it, blow it on whatever, put it towards saving goals, etc..

I love your new segment! It’s something I try to do in my own finance journaling, and it’s so empowering and encouraging to point out the wins. This past month, I was able to use a retroactive “bonus” (cost of living adjustment) and a magic month to pay off a good portion of my debts and get ahead with next month’s bills. It was a great feeling, because I usually feel like I burned through any bonuses that I had gotten in the past - to the point where I’d wonder where the heck the money went lol! I do a no spend week at the end of each month. This encourages me to eat out of the fridge freezer and pantry. It also makes me use up all the last bits of cleaning supplies and toiletries. This means I can put the money I don’t spend in this week into my savings. I have a gifts sinking fund which covers Christmas and birthday etc. I them allow myself all the extra food budget money from October and November for food and drink over Christmas and the New Year.

great question! I use one month ahead every single month to pay my rent and take out cash. Then I re-fill it throughout the month. My emergency fund is for situations where I don't have enough money... in tougher times I've used it to pay rent but fortunately I've not had to touch it for many months!

My money highlight this month was realising that money spending is so connected to emotions. Understanding when I am overwhelmed makes it easier to prevent feeling out of control and spending recklessly.

Hi Zoe! I’m new to your channel and love it so far! I just have one thing lol, I’m a retired banker so it’s the banks fault but when I see bills going in every direction, it drives me crazy!! lol it’s so much nicer if all your bills are facing the same way and organized. I remember I had customers who would bring in cash to deposit and every single note was disorganized so honestly just to show them what we had to go thru I would organize the bills in denomination and all facing the same way face on top of face, and they would huff and puff lol. Next time they would come, their cash was in order! 😄😄

I feel you on the old thoughts coming back! I'd recommend taking some time to really reflect on the purchase and how it will make you feel on a day to day. AMAZING!!

✨My money highlight of the month was taking 750CAD$ in cash while travelling to visit my family to offer this cash to some family members that are so thankful for it. I combined the budget of several spending categories for the month, such as shopping, personal expenses, gifts,… to be able to do this and it’s so rewarding. I feel very appreciative of the fact that I have the capacity to do this and I’m also happy about doing it within my monthly budget somehow.

Great addition. I bought one for myself when I bought my first home. That was in 2005 and I still use it, nearly every day. You don't have to use Nespresso capsules. I'm currently travellling and have learned there are other brands that work with nespresso. Plus Costco often carries some by Starbucks or Peets for Nespresso machines.
