    Thank you for posting this! I'm pivoting careers to data science and your videos are helping so much! I'd say purchasing and logistics are a great transitional career path to data science. Lots of jobs you can get in logistics without any degree that will give you experience with large data sets, ERP systems, and data tools. Great way to get your foot in the door if you're young or don't yet have professional experience.

    I'm not sure you came right out and said it in the video, but your story certainly supports the idea that data scientist roles are not entry level. Not only does it take a technical skillset, but it requires a level of industry knowledge and ability to manage stakeholders that you don't get from learning math/stats/coding.

    @@BoltRM That's why I always say, for the professional jobs it will be always the domain/field expert who either part of their degree program will get some DS related courseworks or a separate MS in DS will actually lead the sector as data strategists. Persons with math/stat/coding background will do better for generalized fields such as walmart sales of toothpastes but these guys are not well-equipped to deal with specialized sectors. Aren't you agree?

    I was an intelligence analyst in the Army, transitioned into an intelligence analyst role in the intelligence community once my contract was complete. Leveraging my experience and skills, I later pivoted into a business analyst role in the private sector. I then pivoted into a data analyst role in the public sector and finally a data science role. My path is obviously meandering and it’s taken me more than 15 years to get to this point, but, then again, I never set out to be a data scientist - at least initially. I also have no degree or certifications.

    There are basically two paths to becoming a data scientist. One, get a data science. Two, start as a data engineer or data analyst, learn data science on the job and get promoted. A data engineer has an advantage in the second way over a data analyst because he/she is coding up the models developed by the data scientist and so is more familiar with the work.

  • @tkmonte1908
    @tkmonte19082 күн бұрын

    Respectively, she didn't become a data scientist (DS) with no experience, she had over a year of it., She said how she made DS w/o experience and then explained how she got the job after a year of experience within her own company. This same scenario wouldn't work if she hadn't already worked with the company, got an opportunity for DS on-the-job training (OJT), used that OJT to build a portfolio, and presented that to the hiring manager (which still would have been a no-go if not for the DS vouching for her). I like your videos, but this doesn't help those who TRULY have NO experience other than telling them to think out of the box.

    Who is a Data Scientist? Wikipedia : Data science is an interdisciplinary academic field that uses statistics, scientific computing, scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract or extrapolate knowledge and insights from potentially noisy, structured, or unstructured data... mmm sounds like its a mouthfull. I do a lot of some of these functions from different levels [NOT ALL]. But it sounds interesting. E.g i have done SQL for more than 20 years and still learning things like how frames are determined in window functions...

    It’s amazing that none of these companies learned anything from the early 2000s, in particular from 2000 to 2002. When the bubble popped and all of these engineers got laid off, many of them went into different industries and gave up development altogether. Fast-forward to 2009. These same companies were screaming and crying for mid to senior level developers because they didn’t have any. Why? Because they didn’t bother to train any new ones from 2000 to 2008. The same exact thing is happening now. They don’t want to hire any entry-level developers or engineers or analyst. They want senior and principal level only. Trust me, in about six or seven years they’re going to be screaming for mid to senior level, developers, engineers, analyst, etc., and there won’t be any around.
