I am no data scientist expert by a longshot, but I believe I know enough to say that it will be highly relevant for a long, long time simply because it involves the most prevalent thing ever that will never go away: information.

Everyone wants to skip the math but that is the most important and longest part of this journey.

Imo, this is what makes data science unique. If you don't like maths then it should be a sign that maybe you should choose something else to pursue a career in.

It's the only reason I am interested in this field - that and it's interconnection with something generally a bit easier to use: computers.

Yup, I quit my engineering job and pivoted into data science. I spent about 2 to 3 weeks learning Python, and now I'm 1 month into learning maths for data science - Linear Algebra, Calculus and Statistics and I foresee myself learning for another month or two. Math is the most fun part in data science, imo.

Math and statistics are what draw me towards DS. In fact, stats has been one of my favorite subjects.

One statement struck me really hard and it's everything for me: "Coding is a tool, Learn the data science before the tools" We pretty much fall into this trap in the tech world, thank you very much

Thanks for your insights. I'm an ex IT professional turned restaurant manager and currently looking for a way to get back to Tech. I'm still comparing bootcamps here in Canada and I believe the most 3 that stand out are General Assembly, university of Toronto continuing studies bootcamp (run by edx but also receiving a certificate by UofT), third is lighthouse which has the best reputation but it's not as recognized as UofT. Wish me luck

The only time when I found math/statistics to be helpful is analyzing A/B test results. I still have a lot to learn but do most data scientists who aren’t AI/ML engineers apply the mathematical knowledge in their job?

If you want to be competent in today’s market then you have to have advance knowledge of Statistics and Mathematics Because without these prerequisites you want be able to do even as basic bas linear regression

How is the Julia language doing in Data Science? Did it get some interest but dropped off, or still too little known at this point? I find it fantastic for physics and math research, and it looks like a great tool for DS and ML in the near future.

I'm currently in school and was deciding specifically between Cybersecurity and Data Science. A lot of the problem I'm seeing is when I'm getting salary quotes people are talking about Data Analyst but quoting Data Scientist pay. A degree in Computer Science is a career change for me, so I'm not sure I have time to go straight into a master's program. Is there a way to go straight in to Data Science with just a BS in Computer Science? I'm also VERY interested in WFH, my mom worked from home from 97-17 for IBM as a Data Analyst. Is there a better path to get than either Cybersecurity or Data Science? I'm only in semester 3 of my post-bacc so learning now would be great.

Im a recent cs graduate with no work experience at all. My favorite classes were by far my senior classes on machine learning, databases, and data science. So i wanted to get a job in data science. Should I first try to get a job as a software developer or something similar first or should I try to shoot for being a data scientist. I've always enjoyed math so the statistics isn't an issue for me.

why limit yourself to location? data science/ml has plenty of remote jobs, even at entry level. better have plenty of projects to show for it though, no different than any other job.

Maybe it's not appropriate to judge whether the magnitude of laid off numbers toward data scientists is big or not. The absolute numbers vary greatly between different roles (such as SWE, DS, HR, ...), making it difficult to assess based solely on the laid-off groups.

That’s fair. There are far more SWEs than data science folks. The study is also dependent on self-reporting so could be biased due to that (like most self-reported studies) but that’s the numbers we have. If you have additional insights, would love to hear.

it takes people to create and maintain the ai intelligence, so it balances out.

AI will put many developers out of work, so data analytics is the new frontier growth area for IT. Also Cyber Security is a key growth area.

Is HTML, CSS, BOOT STRAP, JAVA SCRIPT, Still good for learn in 2024 I am very confused.
