How Heinz Tomato Ketchup Is Made | The Making Of

We visited Heinz's European Tomato Ketchup factory in the Netherlands to see how the world-famous condiment is made. The dutch factory makes 1.8 million bottles of Tomato Ketchup a day, and has been making ketchup for the whole European region since 1958.

Yes, the sauce is more important than the packaging. I worked in a factory like this making sauces and putting them in jars. There's one thing they never tell you. If they have too many jars of unsold sauces, instead of throwing them out, they change the expiry dates. So we had to use alcohol to rub off all the expiry dates on the old jars of sauces and then pass them through the conveyor system to get the new expiry dates printed on them. So the sauce is the same but the expiry dates on the labels are different. It's all about money. When you buy a jar of sauce, you could be using sauce which is already expired.

My grandmother loves Heinz more than anyone I know. She has Heinz buttons, Heinz ornaments, and lots and lots of Heinz condiments, of course. Heinz kind of saved her life. When my grandfather got very sick and couldn't work anymore, my sweet grandma worked her way up in the ranks at Heinz in mid-late 20th century Pittsburgh until she eventually got a job with the Heinz foundation. She worked to help get funds to projects at schools, community centers and the like. She even helped organize the Heinz foundation ball every year, which was attended by many A-List celebrities. She's a true inspiration to me!

it''s all done by computers. The machines put the labels on each bottle and each bottle has to have its picture taken, both front and back, and labels that are crooked or off by a certain millimeter, that bottle gets rejected (kicked off the line). There are actually Heinz glass bottles.. I don't buy the plastic ones. I could sell the bottles to the recycling attendants in my country.

kevin morgan no, they probably don’t. But that doesn’t get rid of the problem. Big companies like that need to start thinking outside the box to help. If they don’t, well, we’re doomed. It’s that sad truth.

real talk it’s their social responsibility to think of other solutions, i mean 1.8 million bottles a day, if they spent as little as 3-5% of their revenue in research they can come up with something alternative, we shouldn’t be ignorant about this issue :)

@Boris Erdogan yeah and glass bottles collect in landfills, most people/places do not recycle those because they have no cash redemption value. You can't burn them in a trash to energy plant either. Glass also breaks (lost revenue) and is heavy so more fuel is needed for transport...and as anyone who has ever used a glass bottle to pour ketchup knows, it sucks trying to get it to come out...

I grew up in Pittsburgh, and it was a common school trip to go to Heinz and see them make ketchup, or pickles or vinegar. I worked in a hospital where we would daily get the smells from the exhaust stacks of the Heinz plant. We could tell every day what they were making - if it smelled like chicken or beef cooking - they were making soup. Tomatoes - probably ketchup, vinegar smelled like vinegar and pickles smell like vinegar & spices. Our patients frequently complained that the smells were making them very hungry.

YES! I work at the Fremont, OH Heinz factory where they only make ketchup.. Every time I approach the area you can smell that 'pungent' smell of the vinegar in the air from a good few miles away. At the Massillon, OH Heinz, they make a lot of the frozen meals and appetizers there, so most of the factory and the air around smells like cooking pasta. OOOh so good! I love it when I 'have' to go help out down there
