For a certain period, the Soviets were among the greatest. European Champions in 1960, European Vice Champions in 1964, World Championship Brass finalists in 1966, European Championship Brass finalists in 1968, European Vice Champions in 1972. Following that, there was a time when they couldn't keep it at that level, but then came back spectacularly in Mexico 1986. Having been eliminated in the 8th Finals is actually a bit misleading in this context, because contrary to many others, they were set against an equally strong opponent, the Belgians, on that occasion. It wasn't in any case accidental that they made the Vice Champion spot again two years later at the Euro 1988 in Germany.

Great video. But I think the ussr had one final comeback at 1988. They placed second, not too bad.

You're absolutely right! They had a pretty decent team in the 80s.....i remember 2 specific players.....the attacker Bluchin(especially around the '82 WC) & the GK Dassayev! The latter was the capitain of the 1988 team that made it to the European Championship final. They had actually beaten Holland in the 1st round but later on lost in the final when the 2 teams met again....!
