A true Golden Goal - USSR vs Brazil - Football - 1988 Seoul Olympic Games

The football Olympic gold medal did not come easily in the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. Brazil and the Soviet Union made it to the final after tough matches against Germany and Italy, respectively. The Soviets had beaten Italy in the extra-time by 3-2; while Brazil had beaten West Germany in the penalty shoot-out.
The Soviet Union was a previous Olympic champion at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games. Brazil, on the other hand, aimed for its first ever Olympic gold medal.
During the 90 minutes, both team's top goal-scorers had put their name in the scoreboard. Romário scored first at the 29th minute for Brazil and Savichev at the 60th minute, found the equalizer converting a penalty-kick. With the match level at the final whistle, teams would go into extra-time.
In an electrifying extra-time Brazil went into attack and had several opportunities only to be denied by the Soviet defense. Until the USSR found a counter attack and scored its second goal with Savichev.
As the tournament regulations determined, the match did not finish immediately after the Soviet goal. However, as the Brazilians were not able to get past the Soviet defense, Savichev's goal became a definite Golden Goal.

I was a fan of the USSR football team (the seniors, that is - Dasaev, Zavarov, Protasov, Aleinikov et. al.) back then, but I do remember watching the later parts of this match 30 years ago...... and of course I rooted for the USSR. After the disappointment of Euro 88 this was at least some consolation, and at least there was one member of the Euro 88 team involved (Oleksiy Mihailichenko - OK I try to spell it the Ukraininian way....). Sad to say, but unknown at the time, this was the end of the glory days of the "CCCP" - 2 years later they would flop at the World Cup (and Rinat Dasaev, my favourite player, would retire in 1991), and as the CIS at Euro 92, would flop yet again. Thereafter, the great mystery would be "why can't (either) the Ukrainian or Russian national teams emulate the USSR in terms of being formidable and feared opponents?"

I think it might be the political changes, a lot of Eastern European teams can't emulate their succes from the communist times. Hungary had a decent team, Checzslovakia was good, Yugoslavia was probably among the best, USSR was a great team. Now most of them are bad.

the problem is that the Soviet team mostly consisted of Ukrainians

great game from start to finish. The Soviet union had an amazing era of football.
That CCCP Adidas kit is beautiful and very expensive to get these days.
Quite a final Olympics for the USSR- gold in football and in basketball.

Después de 31 años vuelvo a vet imágenes de ese partido el cual fue transmitido en vivo en México de madrugada. Pero valió la pena la desmañanada para ver triunfar a la selección Soviética.

Why... Brazil loves all the people of the world, no need of hate. But if seeing brazilians crying makes you happy, you should be very depressive because for 2016 and 2017 brazil is the best of world now. Deal with it. I am proud to be Brazilian.
