USSR vs Yugoslavia - Men's Basketball Final - Seoul 1988 Olympic Games

📲 Subscribe to @olympics: oly.ch/Subscribe
The stage was set. Yugoslavia had beaten Australia, while the USSR had won against the reigning champions team USA in the semi-finals.
The two final teams had already met in their very first match in the 1988 Summer Games. In that Group B match, the Yugoslavian team had won by 92 -- 79. But now the stakes were higher with the Seoul 1988 Olympic gold medal to be won.
Yugoslavia, led by Moscow 1980 Olympic gold medalist Drazen Petrovic, had an impressive start getting to a 24 - 12 lead before the end of the first half. However, The USSR weren't going to give away the gold medal that easily and, by half-time, had taken the lead in to their hands with a 31 -- 26 score.
Back in the game and ahead in the scoreboard, the Soviet team kept its cool in the second half. With Sharunas Marchulionis and Arvydas Sabonis scoring over 20 points each, the USSR maintained a minimum 9 points lead until the final 76 -- 63 score gave them their second Olympic gold medal.

Russian Slavic American here, that was the biggest upset at the time. Yugoslavia had Vlade DIvac 7 foot Center for the Lakers who won multiple championships. In the group stages, Yugoslavia beat the same USSR team 92-79. USSR was lead by a healthy NBA Portland Trailblazers 7'3 Arvydas-Romas Sabonis. If he would not have torn his ACL, some say he would have been the next Larry Bird.

Yeah dominating because Yugoslavia fell apart, otherwise it would not be that smooth. Imagine Yugoslavia now with Jokić, Dončić, Bogdan Bogdanović, Bojan Bogdanović, Dragić, Zubac etc. USA barely won against Serbia alone a couple of days ago in the semifinals of the Olympics. Imagine adding only Dončić, who ethnically is a Serb but raised in Slovenia, to that team. Game over.

Look at how stacked that Yugoslavia team was Drazen Petrovic vs Arvidas Sabonis. When Sebonis was in his 2nd year of the NBA, he took Portland to the NBA Finals but they fell short to Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippen and the mighty Chicago Bulls. We all thought he was going to be the next Larry Bird. However, injuries to both of his knees, multiple ACL tears and back problems slowed down his career. On top of that he had to play some time in Europe before he moved to USA Portland. Had Sabonis started his career in the NBA and did not get hurt, he would have gone down as another Dirk Norwitzki. He still had a good pro career and a very long career but injuries slowed him down, he could have been a hall of famer easily.

Yugoslavia actually beat USSR in the group stages 92-79(Russian Slav American here nice to meet you). This was considered a huge upset, the biggest at the time, next to USSR beating USA. If Yugoslavia/Serbia played USSR/Russia 10 times, they would have won nine but on that night USSR was on fire and they were a team of destiny. They did not have the talent that Yugoslavia had but they played well as a team. USSR had one NBA play, Trailblazers 7'3 Arvydas-Romas Sabonis. If he would not have torn his ACL, some say he would have been the next Larry Bird. When he was healthy, he was scoring over 20 points a game 10 rebounds, helped take Portland to an NBA finals but they lost to Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls. There was so much talent on both of those teams but overall Yugoslavia had more.

By some statistics, Bosnians and Montenegrins are among the tallest people in the world...All 7 Yugoslavian republics now independent countries are very small.. like Slovenia 2 million or Montenegro 750 000 ..They may have fantastic players like Luka Doncic [Slovenia] but none of those 7 republic-states can't be a world champion by itself,, Tiny Slovenia was the European Champion with a population of 2 million only....
