Greg Louganis' Incredible Gold Medal Comeback - Seoul 1988 Olympics

📲 Subscribe to @olympics: oly.ch/Subscribe
Re-live the incredible performance of Greg Louganis (USA) as he wins gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
Greg Louganis is considered the greatest diver of all time. Arriving at Seoul 1988, he was already a champion in his sport with two Olympic gold medals from the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games and a silver won in Montreal 1976, where he had made his Olympic debut at age 16.
However, no one could expect what would happen in Seoul. During the preliminary rounds of the 3 metres springboard competition, Louganis shocked the audience by striking his head on the springboard while performing a dive. He was still able to qualify for the finals where, showing perseverance and determination, Greg Louganis delivered an outstanding performance to take the gold medal.
Louganis would still win another gold medal in the Seoul Olympic Games, this time in the 10 metres platform, taking the Olympic Double Double in men's diving.

As an NCAA diver myself (late 70’s), Greg has always been the very best I’ve ever watched. His grace is unmatched in my book. The most basic dive in the book, his Forward layout is textbook perfect!

Absolutely beautiful. I remember once during one of his Olympics a commentator who had run out of superlatives said, "And on top of it all, he gets extra points simply for showing up in a bathing suit". Meaning his physical presence was itself beautiful.

Diving without splashing is called "ripping" the dive, and he did more often than anyone else. For a long time, Louganis was the only diver with perfect scores in both the 3-meter and 10-meter events.

Greg Louganis' dives looked so strong, yet so artistically pure, it made me think of what athletes would have looked like at the first Olympics in Greece. I always found his most simple dives the most pure and beautiful. Sad about his childhood and struggles in life, I was so happy to see him involved with Red Bull Cliff Diving and had to search these dives. ❤
