How Good Was Nuguri Really?

Ойындар

Jang "Nuguri" Ha-gwon (장하권) of Damwon Gaming/FPX is arguably one of the most influential toplaners in League of Legends History. His aggressive playstyle and signature champion pool perfectly synergized with the rest of Damwon Gaming and helped them win the 2020 League of Legends World Championship. His split on FPX was less successful, with teammates claiming he didn't synergize well with the team at all, forcing him to return to Damwon Gaming after taking a split off to mentally reset. This video retrospective analyzes Nuguri's League of Legends career as a whole to answer the question: How Good Was Nuguri Actually?

The flaw Nuguri had was that he would int first blood in lane but also respawn then somehow solo kill the enemy top after. Which is fine when your mid jungle is stomping, but terrible when your team is not prime Canyon+Showmaker.

Realistically, that 2020 DWG team may have been the most well rounded team of all time. Everyone knew their roles, and all of those roles complimented one another. It didn’t hurt that they had the goat jungler in his prime during a jungle focused meta too.

My favorite player of all time. It seems like you missed out on some opportunities to show just how dominant he was. Statistically he is, behind theshy, the strongest toplaner ever. There are many stats that visualize that he was leading the league as toplaner in every stat like dpm, csdiff @15, gold diff, forward percentage etc. Also, he is the only toplaner in history in the major leagues to ever lead an ENTIRE league in damage per minute (summer 2019). In his best split 2020 summer he was putting up insane numbers and specifically improved his biggest weakness, overextending and dying recklessly in sidelane (zeus is currently doing that a lot) and playing weakside to enable the other side of the map. Funnily enough his actual best version ever is probably the 2021 spring version at FPX. He was the best player itw at that time. Again easily topping the dpm charts together with Theshy and also the csd gold diff stats. Theshy and Nuguri are probably the best laners ever. Players like Gimgoon, Bin, Ale, Zeus have all said he is incredible to best and the best they have faced in scrims.

Watched the league back then and spotted incorrect points (many overall facts were wrong, like beryl, but will be focusing solely on those regarding nuguri) : -2019 was the year where he had the mist deaths in lane. 2019 nuguri can be summarized in extremely high risk player, often dying to ganks. He was called Nu”Gorib”, which means isolated, because of his isolated deaths that destroyed his kda. He was a carry myself or lose the game kind of player, and the version that yall saw in 19 worlds was the -2020 is where most of the video got things wrong. From the very start, Dwg were one of the favorites to the league (I remember skt Wolf placing them top 2 after geng when he went through the rosters). However, 20 dwg spring was rough, mainly because canyon, sm, and beryl were not in good form, and nuclear wasn’t good at Aphelios, the op character alongside Ornn during 20 spring. Here, Nuguri was by far the best top laner in the league, and he alone managed to bring Dwg to 5th place, when the rest of the teams were struggling. At no point in 2020 nuguri had an unreliable playstyle: he was still aggressive, but much more safe in a way. After the MSC, where he destroyed t1, he became the best player in the world, period. He won every single lane he played with any match up, and was the center of the dwg snowball, consisting in using beryl to get herald and get gold from towers. Fun fact: dwg played for top all summer round, and when drx opened up caitlyn (the most op adc in the meta) during summer finals, nuguri picked his first ornn of the summer and gave ghost beryl a bot carry oick, which destroyed deft keria. Worlds Nuguri was the highest point of any Top laner we have seen. Idk why people get the impression that canyon sm were the best in that dwg. It was indeed a jg carry met (nida graves lillia), but Nuguri was still the best pkayer in dwg. He played carry picks like sett camille and kennen, supporting for ghost and canyon picks like lulu, and even tanks like ornn. Funnily enough, he destroyed his opponents with all of them, managing to get top1 damage with tanks in worlds. During the world finals, he was once again the best player. To be honest, to this day idk why cNyon got fmvp. The best player that series was Nuguri, then Beryl and Ghost, and then canyon sm (the last two gave away set 2, fiora’s penta). Game 3 again was a clown fiesta were all dwg members trolled a baron, but nuguri stepped up and carried HARD that game, beating Bin laning against 3 of SN’s members. Now Game 4 was a murder and canyon popped off, which is prolly why he got the fmvp. -21 : nuguri was not the best, but it is hardly his fault. Tian wanted to retire, so Fpx signed Bo, prodigy talent who quickly became the best jg in china. However, he was found matchfixing in his days in the ldl, so he was kicked out and tian got pulled out of his coffin to jg for a broken fpx. Even then, nuguri murdered xiaohu in the spring finals, but the team diff was too big. I know that the popular opinion calls TS or marin the best top laner, but my reasons for it being Nuguri are: unlike the other candidates, he could play Carries, and cheesepicks to perfection. His peak was on par if not higher than the other candidates, and just like ts changed china’s top lane, nuguri changed korea’s, which was much more stacked already. All the best toplaners of today, with the exception of kiin, are in some way or another Nuguri-kids, who try to replicate his aggressive play style (zeus, bin, doran, kingen and many more called him their rolemodel). His only flaws are going to china, which missed us the chance of seeing a grandslam with 21 damwon, and longevity, caused by how strict and harsh he is with himself.

Like, Duke has 2 (3 if you count the IG 2018 run) and I think that's the most out of all toplaners xD Compared to Midlaner's 6 (Faker's Worlds 2013/15/16/23 and MSI 2016/17) and Botlaner's 4 (Bang and Wolf Worlds 2015/16 and MSI 2016/2017) it's very little

Where is Wunder in that intro? While he certainly doesn't have the acumen of his peers,... is what I wanted to say. But then I remember that the first name - the first word - you said was "Khan". And that man's international trophycase is a collection of silver medals reading "Khan't". Am I a die-hard Wunder-fan? Yes. I am and I am not pretending I am not. *BUT* I think if you consider the circumstances under which he performed, it was fucking Europe. There is no "iron sharpens iron", there is no "rising tide that lifts all boats". There is G2, sometimes FNC and maybe one other team doing their damnedest not to be pulled down by the dead weights that are the Excels, SKs and their likes. And with all that in mind I think Wunder should be in the conversation. I'm not saying he is that toplane GOAT - I am not that delusional - but I do think bro deserves a mention.

(khan was literally a liability, he couldn't win lane and had no sinergy with the team map plays) even at lpl he was making insane out plays like getting a kill in a 1v4. unfortunelly he burnt out too soon

Nuguri was the only reason canyon could carry DWG 2020 with their inting bot laners. Nuguri getting sent to FPX with an inting jg Tian andDK getting a non-carry top with khan meant both worlds winners suffered. Nuguri would do well with competent jgs like Xun, Canyon, while Canyon needs carry tops like him, Bin, Zeus, TheShy.

winning worlds 2020 made nuguri a weaker player. He grew an ego that he was a world champ and needed to live up to that. When he thought FPX was not world champion material his ego destroyed his gameplay and he lost the will to play. and when he lost game 5 vs gen G in 2022 his ego broke. His biggest flaw is his ego and manlet personality. Instead of having grit and the hunger to win after defeat like faker, he choose to run away and close off. Moral of the story: it does not matter how talented you are at something if you do not have the mentality to back it up.

  • @LoLAthlete

Damn I never really thought of the difference between a player like him and Faker. It’s crazy because compared to someone like TheShy even who went from undisputed best top to losing a bunch he still never gave up and continued to grind through the losses. Nuguri wasn’t even that bad at his worst yes he mental boomed on FPX but losing to the top KR seed in 2022 after a banger game 5 series should’ve motivated him that he can still be an elite player. Instead he just retired…

  • @yourknight3544

@@LoLAthlete Gameplay wise he wasnt that bad at his worst. But i judge a player outside of game as well because something as simple as being negative impacts the whole team and their gameplay. I'll never accept the excuse of mental boom or new environment for nuguri. Tian's mental was way worse than nuguri's but Tian came back to not let his team down. Tian also had an wrist injury where he played in pain, yet he still tried to give his 100%. Despite all that Tian did his best to help nuguri open up, Donib also played his heart out every game and did his best to help his team outside of games. So i think things like maturity, and a good mentality is often overlooked when judging how good a player is. Like how Perkz helped G2 get out of slumps.

I think your facts are a bit skewed to hype some players up more than they actually were. "TheShy" and "Relevant" don't belong in the same sentence in that intro. He did nothing past 2019. People often forget that even in 2023, he was sprinting it down so hard but Xiaohu carried him to worlds. Had a pop off performance in worlds and now people think he's been "relevant"...

  • @retryghane

I don't understand hype nuguri is getting, someone will explain it to me? I can't understand this internet movement worshipping this korean toplaner, I know his career very well and there is nothing to talk about besides one season which they won worlds. This description says "His split on FPX was less successful" which is a big understatement, his split on FPX was tragic and disappointing. At this point in time in comparison with other toplaners he isn't "arguably one of the most influential toplaners in League of Legends History", I don't know how author considers word "influential" but it's nowhere near nuguri's character in game or outside of it, for a quick example you can easliy google his interview with Ashley Kang where he was speaking of himself - this way or another stuff that he was saying doesn't reflect him being "influential". And don't get me wrong, he was a perfect addition to damwon 2020 but you can't say anything about him being significant in lol history, for me he is on the same page as Ghost, good in his prime but nothing more
