The RMS Queen Mary launched on September 26th, 1934 is one of the only ocean liners that still survives today, permanently moored in Long Beach, California after her retirement in 1967. Now a floating museum and hotel, the historic ocean liner has faced financial difficulties almost from the day she docked at her new home. Her operators have leaned hard into promoting her supposedly paranormal past to attract guests. But did exploiting her dark history doom her chances of offering a sustainable hotel and restaurant business?

Let's be real, the way to save the Queen Mary is to make every part of it you can as period accurate as possible. Make all of the cabins exact mimics of first class back in the day, have daily menus that are all inclusive, have the staff wear period accurate costumes and sell the ship as a nostalgic experience.

Pretty sure that's the intention. However if you mean to literally refit "every part" of the ship correct to period or as close as possible then the cost would almost certainly be prohibitive. Best thing that could be done here would be to secure the hull & superstructure so they're not going to collapse, then build a framework with girders inside. Gut out what's not needed as the framework is constructed, & use that framework to secure parts of the ship to be preserved, then work on making them the period experience you mention. Although she's smaller than the Queen Mary this is what was done with the SS Great Britain, now in dry dock at Bristol after having been beached & left to rot for many years in the Falkland Islands. If you're unfamiliar with the story of her recovery & reconstruction it's a story well worth looking into.

It's incredible that we still have the Mary. In the vast sea of people that would exploit her (be it the scrappers or the KZreadrs looking to make clickbait videos), there were thankfully a few people who recognized her worth like the Rathers and the Long Beach committee who put together her winning bid. The ship is a star, it just needs a vision to be run successfully. I'm hopeful that it has a long future ahead.

We live within an overly obsessed generation who will do just about anything for attention & higher view counts. The shit really hit the fan when people discovered doing something shocking and/or negative would expedite this process. Remember back in the day you had to be talented or awesome at something to earn the notoriety most people craved??? Implementation of the internet / social media has solved that problem, but also created several new ones all its own. Although getting internet fame has been simplified greatly, maintaining & growing it are much harder than most realize. I have found in life you can't miss something you never had to begin with, but to have something & have it taken away is a whole other story. The staying famous has many You Tubers pushing the their limits to the point of putting themselves, & at times others too at risk for serious injury or loss of life. All this so you can hopefully be recognized by total strangers & earn a living by making an ass out of yourself. 😀I must be officially "old" because I dont understand the benefit vs the risk!!😀(except for making an easy living that in most cases is very temporary at best)!!

KZread channels that are doing “haunting” videos are directed towards children. Of course they’re not going to “do it for the research or investigation”. They’re channels run by teens that kids are watching. Past googling basic info little research is done for any topic for a ten to twenty minute KZread video that takes an hour to edit and upload. They’re not going to explain the history of the ship, those channels aren’t intended for that kind of thing. They’re geared for kids looking for particular videos on here, not middle aged adults interested in the actual ship itself.

I worked aboard the QM in high school. Just prior to Disney's purchase. Before the mouse took over, there was never a word about and 'hauntings' sightings, spooky feelings, etc., etc. Nothing. When Disney started in, one of the things we were all asked was about ghosts. Did we ever see this or that, of feel this way or that and where. Suddenly there was new literature and promotions speaking of the "hauntings". Even these days, i've spoken with current tourguides. When this conversation comes up they've, to a person, stated that, paraphrased... "...yeah we know its BS but thats the draw for crowds." All tht said, she 'haunts' my soul. I absolutely love the Queen. I even shipped with the merchant marine for 5 years just because of my experience aboard the Queen. God help us and Long Beach if we foolishly lose this physical connection to a bygone era that was so great in so many ways, where this proud ship stands as trophy of the heights we achieved then

I was a waitress in a restaurant called "The Capstan" on the Queen Mary in 1976, while I was atending CSULB. To get to the restaurant, I would walk through areas of the ship which had not yet been restored, I think the old ballroom might have been part of my walk. It was a bit creepy, only because it was dark and lonely, but there were a few rumors at that time. It was a big mistake to market the ship as a creep-fest, becaue there was so much about it that was beautiful.

I wasn't able to board her while I was in California last year, but the sheer majesty of seeing her was awe-inspiring. She truly is a great ship and I hope they can save her. I ran into a gentleman who spent a lot of time on her and he gave me the run-down of her history. It might be interesting to know that when they made the Queen Mary II that they took one of the horns off of the original Queen Mary for her and when the Queen Mary II stopped off in Long Beach, they saluted each other. I watched the KZread video of it and it was marvelous

In 2018 I spent two nights on the Queen Mary. It had been one of the things I had most wanted to do while visiting south California. I had an eerie experience in the middle of the night as I was woken by the sound of a music box playing. It felt comforting and not at all worrying. The visit didn't disappoint. Her staterooms were beautiful. We were so lucky to be invited in by a very kind woman who was staying in the Churchill suit. It was such an elegant and memorable suite. Much of the ship was a mess, but much was also gorgeous and nicely preserved. I did have the feeling that so much more could have been possible to make her a desirable destination and avoid the theme park default. Having said that we were there in October and the halloween fair was in full swing, however as we were there on a Friday night the lounge was completely packed until well after midnight and there were numerous wedding parties also staying there. All in all, I think there was much potential there. Thank you for the wonderful and for me nostalgic video! I'll definitely be watching this again.

I am an Australian ocean liner enthusiast and first learned that QM still existed in Long Beach back in the mid 70s, after reading an article in a magazine (no internet then). From that time as a young teenager, I yearned to visit the liner. When I could finally afford an air ticket to America in the mid 80s, I flew to LA and bee-lined it straight to Long Beach from LAX. As we approached the Queen on the expressway and I sighted her funnels in the distance, I literally cried. It still gives me goose-bumps remembering that experience. Boarding and check-in was a blur, as I was so excited as an early 20s lad having his dream come true. I entered my 'B' deck Port Side First Class stateroom and was in awe! I touched everything drinking her in. Knowing every passageway and public room from deck plans and brochures tattooed on my brain from years of planning and anticipation, I went straight to the Frist Class Dining Room on 'R' deck, entered and sat on the shiny parquetry floors. I gazed up at the map of the Atlantic and cried again like a baby. I was mesmerised and almost numb. This was the map of the Atlantic and the track of the ship that I had only seen in books and dreamed of seeing for so long. I stayed aboard absolutely brimming with excitement for three glorious nights. Since then, I have "pilgrimaged" from Australia to the Queen Mary many times, always staying aboard, right up until 2017. Whenever I board her, I feel I have returned "home". She is my address in LA when visiting the US. I know how you feel Garrison and would be devastated if I could no longer return "home".

Excellent tale of how she ended up retired and transitioned through so many owners to get to the state she's in now. Maintaining a super-liner as a fixed attraction requires a lot of careful planning and big reinvestment into the maintenance and upkeep of the vessel. I think there's a cultural influence on how that plays out; some nations seemingly better at long-term preservation planning than others. At least, for now, she's still around so there's still hope.

I've visited just a few years ago, there were no parlor tricks, it was beautiful, it was like stepping back in time. The stories of the awful things that happened there are enough, no need for any tricks, (and they know that). To say that ghosts are why it got run down is a stretch (to say the least). It's on the ocean, anyone who has lived near the beach knows how corrosive that environment gets, it was just under lousy management, no need to blame it on ghosts. ( This guy also failed to mention the pandemic as being the main reason for its closure in March 2020.) It should be well maintained of course, but upgrading it into a luxury resort will price it out of the middle class' reach (which will inevitably lead to its closure, as most wealthy people would much rather spend their money on a modern day luxury liner that actually moves). If you get a chance you should definitely go see it, you won't regret it.

An excellent sentiment I've been echoing for years. They cannot market her as a 1st class destination & attraction while cutting back on maintenance and throwing out these cheap ghost gimmicks. People who come to visit the QM have seen pictures of her luxurious interiors in their glory days. That's what they want to see. I went on a tour and saw dimly lit, mostly empty spaces. I know most of her original furniture has been, sadly, lost or destroyed but if they could fill her public rooms and cabins with replica furniture and give more elaborate tours I think it would help the ship immensely.

The Queen Mary is living proof of why we shouldn't entrust a priceless piece of history to politicians and businessmen. Had the ship simply been PRESERVED in her 1960's configuration, she would be a much greater draw to histourists (histourians?) than she is. It's hard to visit Queen Mary and be excited about the amount of damage that's been done to her over the years by her various owners who not only failed in their various ventures, but also failed to be protectors and stewards of her history. I am well aware that the proposals by these same idiots is what saved her, but ultimately what they did is take the last surviving transatlantic ocean liner in the world and destroyed her.

This needs to change. Things need to change. And I believe once the focus is switched back to luxury and heritage, the ship will start making that money hand over fist. Thanks again!

I'm a volunteer at a few steam railways here in the Uk, one of the biggest concerns of our operations is preserving the history of our historic sites and vehicles. I have often wondered that if the queen Mary had been treated in a similar manor, she wouldn't have fallen into such a bad state. take for example the Middleton railway (my current stamping ground). the line was bought by enthusiasts and operated in a similar condition to how it was during its working life. the thing that brings the tourists to us is the railway itself. we don't make shit up about the railway to draw people in, we don't cause a media circus over the one time a locomotive exploded. and we especially don't make out our railway to be decrepit or falling apart. that's sort of what our job is to prevent. we don't devote our lives to preserving its history only to ruin it to make a quick bit of cash. what Mary needs is people who care about keeping her history alive. that's how our railway exists, and how many others in Britan have made it into the 2000s. i know that she is a massive ship, and she needs a lot of money to keep her around, but more extreme things have happened in historical preservation. im not sure of the exact figures but the NYMR (another hang out of mine) spends several million a year alone on coal to keep the fires going, and the cost of maintaining the locomotives is likely near double that. the money isn't the main issue here. its finding the people that will do right by her thats the problem

I was always appalled the Olympic wasn't saved as a museum. Anyway, out of all U.S. cities, the Low Angeles area cares the least about history. That area has torn down more historic buildings than I care to remember. Society is changing. People are slobs who never dress up or care about glamour. When the Queen Mary 2 starts losing too much money, that will sadly be the last ocean liner. Fortunately, we have people like you to keep history alive.

I am from Long Beach, CA and work right next to the Queen Mary most days - it is tragic to see the condition she has been left in. The city is doing what they can when it comes to restoring her but the problem as usual simply comes down to money. The Carnival Cruise Terminal is right next door (in the old Spruce Goose dome) and the city is fighting a lot of other issues such as homelessness, crime, and maintaining a public safety sector that the funds just are not there to fix the QM. I hope they can before it is too late - rumors have floated around for years that they may sell her carcass off to Asia for scrapping but no one really knows what will happen...

No doubt when every penny of profit is squeezed outta her & there are none of those who are truly passionate about her restoration & upkeep left up for this mighty task it will most likely be scrapped. It's a sad ending for this majestic & legendary liner, but so is seeing the homeless population grow by leaps & bounds & other higher priority issues that most cities face daily. You gotta wonder if all the incoming money was actually used for what it's intended for could all these issues be taken care of or at the very least minimized and/ or managed...???

Queen Mary employee here. 1) Do NOT listen to the news. They are desperate for drama, gossip, rumors, & love to scare people out since that's how they get their ratings up & money. 2) No one in the right mind will get rid of her since the city makes over $200 million who only needed total of $22 million. Is already taken care with "insurance." 3) I was there at exhibit, boiler, & engine room that is already repaired of the major parts of the ship. 4) What it only needs is the repairs of the elevators, promenade floors, & new body paint. 5) The crime & homelessness in downtown LB has been a problem since forever. It has grown thanks to cops who refused to be there & blames the Los Angeles mayor (local) for cutting their salaries for their corruption.

Fantastic video, thank you for making it. I have lived in Southern California since 2006 and I have been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time on the Queen Mary. I have slept in many of her state rooms, eaten in all of her restaurants, and spent New Year's Eve there probably seven or eight times. I have done every possible tour on board (both official and unofficial) and even attended the regrettable "Dark Harbor" Halloween Extravaganza one year. Obviously, the Queen Mary is very special and important to me. But with all that being said, there was always an element of "Rose Tinted Glasses" whenever I stayed in the State Rooms there. For the money, you could get a more modern or nicer hotel room, but nothing anywhere near as cool or historic. I never stayed there because I "needed" a hotel in Long Beach, I stayed there either because I wanted to or because I was attending a function there. I love the history, the design, and the atmosphere on board, and I can't wait to go there again.

On a less depressing note, she is open as of September 2023. I was visiting California from Arizona and thought she would be a cool place to stay. Unfortunate for me, she was fully booked that weekend which seems like a positive sign. Also, her remaining aft engine room space was finally open to the public. That was a fascinating space to visit and definitely very memorable.

I was able to visit and eat on the queen Mary back in October 2019. I didn’t know anything about “dark harbor” and seeing all the stuff setup for the event really made me question why. I knew that I was at a historic piece of history with such a beautiful story, the dark harbor to me seemed wrong. As mentioned, the ship is meant to be a hotel and a luxury place to stay, not a haunted attraction and money needs to be put towards the ship and not just into the owners pockets. The ship inside was beautiful and I hope the ship is able to be seen as a beautiful place to stay for a vacation, rather than a place to hunt ghosts and make clickbait videos.

My favorite metaphor for the Queen Mary as she is now is as if the decaying corpse of some well loved celebrity is on display in a carnival sideshow. So much of the grandeur that made her the grand old lady of the North Atlantic has been ripped out and sold off, scrapped, or just thrown away. It's especially depressing to those of us know what once was there, and is now gone forever.

Staterooms have been renovated exceptional given the ship's age . Granted, many areas are still undergoing renovation, but the city should be commended based on the parts they have finished and have opened to the public thus far. What an amazing stay and trip back in time. You need to go if you haven't gone since the making of this video. I think you would be proud. The Sunday brunch in the giant ballroom will be amazing as well when it returns hopefully later this summer in August . Will definitely be back for another stay after the brunch returns. I’ve visited her many times as a kid. Nearly all decisions revolve around money because most decisions need to be financially viable. Those who purchased her, leased her, and are currently responsible for her laid out large sums of money. While I would like to see her in her original glory that costs money, just keeping her afloat costs money, lots and lots of money and sometimes one needs to make a quick buck in order to keep the lights on. Lots of people who don’t own or run businesses talk about mismanagement and short cuts without ever having any idea of the costs associated.

My sister and I used to go visit the Queen at least twice a year when we first moved out here in the late '80s. They still had the Spruce Goose there as well at that time. During the revolving doors of the 90s, we fell out of the habit of visiting, but in 2000 we were vendors at a trade show held on the ship. So we stayed overnight on her for the first time. And we ended up taking the WRONG elevator and getting locked into the museum by accident! Thank goodness for janitors! There was some kind of renovation of the rooms going on at the time, because part of the main hotel corridor was stacked with sinks...so many sinks... It was far from the luxury experience the original concept was, but it had not denigrated into Haunted House Central yet. I don't know if the city of Long Beach can save her...or if anyone, at this point, can. The city is partly to blame for the loss of Disney as an operator, however, since they strenuously have resisted any and all efforts to develop the area around the Queen, except for a handful of shops which I'm fairly sure are gone by now. She's not ever going to be enough of a draw by herself. Anyone staying at a hotel would like to have something to go look at, and where she is, there's nothing.

May 11 2023, I spent my birthday on Queen Mary, scheduled to fully re-open the next day. I took the "Ghosts and Legends tour, and without question, Queen Mary is the most UN-Haunted liner. Most accidents/activities were par for her years at sea, & the thought of "moans at the bow" are attributable to a Royal Navy cruiser turning in front of the speeding liner, & before anyone could turn, Queen Mary sliced the cruiser in half (after WW2, 2/3 blame was placed on the cruiser). I'll look forward to when I can tour her yet again!

I'm a huge Poseidon Adventure fan, so that was part of the draw for me. I took a number of photos and each one was filled with orbs. Never had that happen before--make of it what you will. So happy I had the opportunity to see her before she closed. Hope she gets the renovation she deserves and re-opens in the future. Thanks for another fantastic video!

I think that part of the Queen Mary’s failures lie in the location. Long Beach California, at the edge of an industrial estate, was a terrible place to retire. Imagine the same story, but in New York, or even Los Angeles or San Francisco. Part of the reason why the QE2 works so well, is because she’s right next to Dubai’s heart. She’s a luxury hotel right next to where people can most often be found, a great place for any hotel. A place where people are already known to spend their time. Parked at the edge of an industrial estate, there’s no reason to visit the Queen Mary unless you’re going to see the ship itself. Otherwise there’s no incentive for people to go anywhere near. But since relocating her in her current condition is impossible, her best chance is for the surrounding area to be repurposed. But that doesn’t seem at all possible. So aside from relocating, and while I continue to have faith in Queen Mary’s restoration and preservation, I can’t see how it’s possible with the hand she’s been dealt. Only time will tell.

I was a 16 year old boy and watched the Queen Mary enter Long Beach harbor for the first time from a friends cabin cruiser . I was at the Queen Mary on opening day. And since, have visited and stayed overnight in the first class cabins probably 30 times over the years. She is a wonderful and elegant ship with such a incredible history. And I’m telling the truth that I’ve never never experienced any kind of supernatural or ghostly happening. She is actually floating at her berth, so••• yes you hear groans and creaking of the ship as she moves. The walls are not every soundproof, so you can hear people in the rooms on each side of you talking and moving about . But NO GHOSTS!! It was just something thought up by Disney as a marketing scheme. ( And a Poor Idea at that ) !!! I should know, I worked at Disney for 48 years. It was their idea ! No Ghosts ! All it did was hurt the luxury image that the ship was once famous for . She deserves better!! Hopefully she will receive it in the future. Long Live the Beautiful Queen Mary!

An excellent account of her post-retirement years, and I strongly agree with your assessment of the greedy, shortsided, half-assed and downright disrespectful business 'strategies' that have plagued the great ship. The cynical promotion of Queen Mary as being 'haunted' is not only at odds with her intended use as a hotel, as you point out, but it contradicts the reputation she had throughout her career as a 'happy' ship, one loved by passengers and crew alike for being a comfortable, safe and harmonious place with a generally good 'vibe'. This subject hits, quite literally, close to home for me- RMS Queen Mary is an easy ½ hour drive up Pacific Coast Highway from my home town. I was barely 3 years old when she arrived in Long Beach, and she was the first ocean liner I knew. She's largely responsible for my lifelong love of ocean liners. I've naturally neen aboard her, though it's been a long time. I, too, remain optimistic about her future. I certainly hope the new operators drop the lame 'haunted' schtick and take a higher road. Thank you for the great work you do. I really appreciate the high standards you maintain, and your genuine love of the Great Liners is always evident. Until next time, bon voyage, mon ami!

My father, in October of 1942, took the Queen Mary to England to train for World War II. Unfortunately, this crossing was when they hit the Curacao escort ship, and 360 British sailors drown because the Queen Mary could not stop to rescue them for fear that the Germans would torpedo the ship with 15,000 soldiers. My father was just taking his shift below decks to sleep and had just crawled into the top rack when they collided. They all fell in a huge heap on the floor, thinking they had been hit by a German torpedo and were going to drown. No one told them anything as they waited anxiously below decks. When they reached port, the soldiers could see the damaged bow of the ship. Two months later, in December, the Queen Mary was hit by a huge rogue wave, amost 100 ft high. The ship was within 3 degrees of listing and sinking. She was carrying almost 16,000 men. Edit: My brother and I visited the QM in 2005, and stayed in the hotel. It was really kind of sad and depressing.

I think the last nail in the coffin for the QM's reputation was where she was located to. Long Beach is right next to LA, and as we all know, LA is filled with youtubers and celebrities, so it's not very surprising that when people found out that the queen mary had a haunted past, and then they saw an opportunity to clickbait with ghost videos. I mean all they'd have to do is drive like 30 mins from LA to Long Beach to see her.

Visited her several times and stayed overnight in 2018. I agree that she's been the victim of poor decision-making from the day she entered Long Beach harbor. It's a daunting task to preserve a huge rust-susceptible ship parked next to the ocean without the ability to drydock or the benefit of constant spot maintenance provided by a crew. I'm sure the bean-counters overlooked that in their cost projections. What I also fail to understand is why -if you intend to create a floating museum- would you strip so much of its art and fittings? She's like an Art Deco shell. The cabins that make up the hotel are also not in great shape. They look tired, stripped down and aren't representative of their price tag. If Disney wants to have another go, they should consider refurbishing the SS United States for service and outfitting her in mid-century style in accordance with the period Disneyland opened. They have the resources, an existing fleet she could fit in with and Walt would have approved, if not for his love of classic liners, his desire the save America's flagship.

It's hard to love something so expensive to maintain - scrapping is so often inevitable :( fabulous video though, I enjoy the additional lore behind a ship in addition to full history vids :)

Would you consider making some kind of shorts series, just following the restoration? I absolutely love hearing about that kinda stuff, and the brief conversation of it at the end of this video really whet my appetite!

I came back from England to Australia in 2008, and lucked out with the layover in LA... the cheapest hotel I could get was the Queen Mary. Back before Urban Commons turned it into a ghost destination... Was onboard for 5 nights... My favourite place in the world. Just heard word they've reopened... Hope they've done her proud, she deserves it. And yes, there's spirits on board but definitely not the ghost house crap they tried to market later

ghost hunters are really, really easy targets. it's just effortless. they sap the fun out of any story they're in. best to simply not mention them

The facts that her reputation and future was destroyed by youtuber hereing of one death and clameing that she is haunted is sad. I think one of the reasons she sits decaying is because only 2 types of people would go on her the ship fans like you and me and the ghost fans. The rest scared away

She's linked to far more than one death. They say you can hear crewmen of the H.M.S. Curacao far forward.

I’m staying in a beach condo in Long Beach right now. The Queen Mary is my view during my morning coffee. I’ve walk over to her a several times now. It’s just tragic what has become of her. And yes the area is not great. The rusty Russian sub next to her needs to go. It would be amazing if Carnival could jump in and help restore her back to a hotel and restaurant. But it would be even better if she could also be seaworthy and taken out a few times a year for a novelty cruise by Carnival. I would definitely book that cruise

Just had the pleasure of staying aboard her the night before I took a cruise out of the neighboring Carnival terminal. She’s in decent shape in some areas, rough shape in others, but she’s not beyond saving yet. Part of the problem as I see it beyond long overdue maintenance to the key systems like the hull, is she needs some basic TLC and updates to the hotel spaces. Not big things either, some carpets, floor buffing, and a few simple touches like fake flowers and a desk or chairs in the staterooms would do wonders.

Nicely done, though you didn't mention how the Queen Mary became known for ghostly things. I believe it was as a result of her cutting an out of position escort ship in two during WWII. Known then as the "Grey Lady," She was used as a high speed troop ship. It was said that the sounds of the collision would occasionally be heard up at the bow along with some sightings.

Wait, wasn’t she known as The ”Grey Ghost” and not ”Grey Lady”? Or was she known with both nicknames?
