Welcome to Big Old Boats, a channel dedicated to maritime stories from the great ocean liners to the freighters of the Great Lakes and the modest Pacific Northwest passenger steamers. Ocean liner history is world history and I love sharing the human stories that shaped the world we live in today. I hope you enjoy and learn a bit about some big old boats. Also, don't forget to be nice to people!

Just slaughtered the name Manitowoc
Id of let him sleep.
Anytime I hear about logging I remember pictures I saw from the 1800s. Where I live it's still considered rural but there are pics from the 1800s of loga so big they were shipped one per rail car. Tree trunks so large that after the tree was cut down they turned the stump into a house. An I'm not talking redwoods or something. These were regular pine trees. The US used to have some truly amazing forests.
Great video!
The host sounds tooo rainb0000wwwyy
Your coverage of the geat lakes disasters of old and overall attention to detail. With the respect for the victims and their families. Makes my Midwestern heart happy. Thank you for all that you do.
many ships watched her sink

Love all your videos and love the Great Lakes can’t wait to hear more stories about it❤️
This is the second episode of watched on this channel. I am really going to enjoy these videos
I have become addicted to your channel. I have long been an enthusiast of ships from the turn of the last century, but you are bringing to light ships that I have never heard of, and you do it with painstaking detail. Thank you, I feel like a kid again ( I'm 63!), and I am falling in love with my old passion once again. I appreciate your dedication to detail. It's all new to me again. Yes, I did pay attention to the end, and the gold. Not that the knowledge would do me any good at. The lowest point I will swim to is the bottom of my bathtub, and I hope my rubber ducky will have the buoyancy I need to get me to the surface in case of emergency. Cheers!

I have a question and I'm sure someone knows the answer. Few of the many ship stories I have watched and enjoyed have female names, whereas naming ships and / or boats after women has always been very common. Is there an unspoken rule about this? Aren't ships and boats usually referred to as "she"?
He must have ordered “hard to port” not starboard, as the iceberg was on the starboard bow.
Of course the Daniel J. Morrell would meet her own tragic end as well...
The legend lives on....and on the last day the sea shall give up its dead. Thank you for a wonderful video!
Another great video. Thanks so much for your work!
I wonder what has sunk the most ships? Big storms or loose lips?
its a bad feeling when you are pretty sure youre about to die and its a remote place, very lonely gone but not forgotten
It's NO mystery. Her name was "CALIFORNIAN".
Mind blowing that mariners could see repeated star clusters and be like huh, no chance that’s an emergency
Your editing style, and non-dramatized presentation are two major parts of why I love your videos so much. One of my favorite KZread channels, easily!
When the water level is high drownings increase expidentially . Last 6 years water been very high but going down however Elnino also effects this due to more storms If there’s a storm in Oklahoma of Kansas etc believe me it either gets stronger or stopped over the lakes and it’s 99% of the time it’s Lake Mi in that stretch so of course there’s more danger . If you haven’t experienced the Great Lakes . Words won’t help . They’re not LAKES there inland seas and VICIOUS storms with Unbelievale HUGE waves are common and in those waves you get RIPS and Undertows that no swimmer can handle . Add that to a pier nearby e and it’s pure DANGER . The Great Lakes are huge massive beautiful and FUN FUN FUN but must be respected and like ANY sea you NEVER EVER turn your back to the sea . Be safe be educated follow the flags and STAY safe and Enjoy our pride and joy in this awesome state
All about the money.. a typical story
You’re missing Muskegon County, one of the oldest counties in Michigan. It would be above Ottawa County and below Oceana County, also the the west of Kent County.. 😅
Are there any lake ontario stories? I follow you and a few similar channels and not one on lake ontario. Very few lake erie. Not complaining just wondering if there are any significant sinkings?
To me it was a united states navy cover up for the wealthy shipping company how friggen cruel!!!😢😢😢
You do such an excellent job creating these videos. I enjoy them all.
I’ve seen legendary creatures of ginormous proportions in the deep waters of the Great Lakes eerie and superior. Nobody ever goes out there, but us fisherman talk about these creatures a lot which peak there heads out of the water and even dive like whales.
Yes, it is sad that we were not taught about the lakes and the areas around them. We weren't taught about those areas and the ships like what we were taught about the rest of the country. I'm learning so much from you and it's entertaining plus sadness . Many things that I didn't know. Thanks for bringing all this amazing history and for all the work you've put into it. 😊
Good job. Thx.
Its ironic that about 57 years later The Morrel would meet the same fate in Lake Huron during a Nov Gale...
Love the laker stuff. I grew up close to Duluth. Love laker history.
Was the damage to the ship noted when it was discovered, and any clues as to what happened?
Seeing you with facial hair is…surreal, to say the least.
Great video! almost made me feel as if I were there! Thank you so much!!! James Selke (..."Sell-Key")
The USS Arizona was christened with water from Lake Roosevelt when she was launched in 1915. Bad omen?
I knew this video was coming. I saw the footage of the wreck's discovery. This is the 3rd wreck I've seen discovery footage of, then you make a video a short time later. Thanks. Truly. Now I know of this ship's history, as I also learned of the others history.
Just because they don't like alcohol doesn't mean that Gods do not. That was bad manners.
Lost my uncle on the Bradley, sad I never got to meet him. Bless you Jimmy Selke.
Fascinating video, as always! I love that you are following up on wrecks that are still being discovered in the Great Lakes. I invite anyone who is interested in shipping to come over to my hone state of Michigan and check out our many ship museums and lighthouses across the state. The Dossin museum in Detroit, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, the Point Betsie Lighthouse museum by Frankfort, and many more.
Mafia: Mussolini has us licked but the US is at war, we need a way to overcome them. *SS Normandie pops in to the harbor* Mafia: *Lights matches with malicious intent*
I was at Grand Haven back in the 80s sometime when a young man was lost to the big lake... He was only 12 and I can still remember it like it was yesterday
I love your vids man. Being a Michigander I especially love the great lake ones . 👊😎👍
It's easy to wax lyrical about your killer use of historical footage, maps, etc. to really set an appropriate tone, but man do you ever deserve praise for the sound design in these videos. I normally watch via iPad speaker, and re-watching this video through some nice headphones gave me goosebumps. Well done as always!
Animating the water around the picture of Adella Shores, putting snow on top, and then fading out the Shores to show her disappearance, was a really nice touch.
Blame is the company
No, water doesn't work as well.
Amazing how many europeans were working the Great Lakes.
