How FNaF4 Works: A Comprehensive AI Breakdown

Ойындар

Made this video out of a comment I made on r/technicalfnaf: / how_does_fnaf_4s_ai_work
Editing this together took forever, so I hope this video will be a helpful resource for anyone looking to learn about how FNaF4 works. Regardless, I appreciate all the support on the previous two videos and I've already got a fun little video in the works that I hope won't take quite as much time.
Thanks to Folmic, GBAura, and others for giving me feedback, I appreciate it a ton ♥

If you're wondering if the game functioned any differently in older versions, it did! Check out the changelog here: docs.google.com/document/d/1g...
Yes! I know the video is quiet as fuck, this will be fixed in future videos, do not worry!
Corrections! Fredbear/Nightmare's AFK kill is 25 seconds, not 15 seconds like in the script.
Also, despite saying that the kitchen acts the same as the middle, I still show the possibility for Chica to go to the hall from the kitchen; she cannot!
FAQ:
Q: I heard breathing, closed the door for long enough, but they didn't leave. What happened?
A: Close the door when you hear them breathing, and you’ll always be safe. Right? Unfortunately, not exactly. There’s a small oversight, another discovery by Folmic, where if you close the door right at a 10-second interval, Bonnie or Chica may not be able to be cleared. This is because during the door closing animation, you’re not considered to be listening to the door, allowing them to move back to the far hall, but then you finish closing the door and trigger that mechanic that moves them back, but disables clearing them.
Because this animation is 10 frames long, it essentially means that you have a 1/60 chance of the door not working. Your only real recourse is if you notice that you hear footsteps from that side right after closing the door, and not after, and then you can just open it, check for breathing and close it again if you’re right.
Q: I closed the door on Fredbear/Nightmare, but I still died?
A: Animatronics can only be cleared from the door or closet at 3-second intervals, so that means that you were unfortunately too slow.
Q: What does the breathing sound like?
A: I play part of the sound at 3:34. You need to watch out for subtle sounds and be patient, the full sound (along with every other) can be heard here: • Five Nights at Freddys...
Q: What about the Halloween Edition animatronics (Nightmarionne, Nightmare Mangle, etc.)?
A: They're just reskins. The only differences are that you can't see Nightmare Mangle in the hall (and she makes radio noises when he's in the closet), and there is a music box that plays whenever Nightmarionne is active
Q: What about the cupcake?
A: That is Nightmare Chica's bedroom jumpscare if she's by the door for too long (3:08 for how long)

    Yes, I have another question. I’m trying to beat night 7 right now, and I’ve only died to nightmare twice, no other animatronics on that night. The first time I died, i was at the left door at 3 am, then it turned to 4 am. I went to the right, shined the light, he wasn’t there. I went to the left, shined the light, he was there. I closed the door and still died. And I only shined the light on him for around 1 second. The second time, I used a different strategy, which is no flashlight and just closing the door for 3 seconds. I was again at the left, turned 4 am, went to right, closed the door, went to left, closed door. And died again. I don’t even wanna know how to beat it, I just want to know why this is happening.

    The Nightmares behaviors are very terrifying if you think about it. They react to light with anger and extreme aggression, they move around the house a bit like intelligent humans. You forgot that Nightmare will frequently trick you, and keep running back and forth between the left and right hallway. Eventually he will pick a side, but it's good to have earbuds so you can hear him faking you out. Also, if you hear Nightmare Fredbear or Nightmare laugh, AND you hear footsteps after, it means the laugh is fake. If there are no footsteps and JUST the laugh, you have to check the bed or closet.

    Probably one of the most terrifying fnaf games i've played, and probably my favorite. Like, you can know where they are, you can predict where they go by hearing them, but you still can have the feeling of "What If I'm wrong?", which is made even worse considering that if you close the door on a moment you shouldn't, you'll be just making them get closer without knowing or having a feeling of "Did I lose track of them?", Which seeing your flashlight flickering just makes it worse to feel, specifically when you check a empty hall and it starts happening. It makes the gameplay so interesting for me in some way.

  • @itztaken

    @itztaken

    This is exactly how I feel about this game! The listening mechanic works wonders to make you doubt your own hearing abilities (though the eardrum shattering jumpscares might play a part in that). The flashlight flickering is also a really cool touch to put the pressure on when the danger is high; almost everyone panics when that starts happening. The only other game that could hold that looming anxiety for as long, was FFPS.

    Fantastic in-depth video on the inner workings. Although you got one thing wrong - footstep sounds don’t change panning depending on where you are in the room. For example regardless of whether you were on the left or right and Bonnie made footsteps, you’d still only hear them in the left ear, and likewise with Chica’s footsteps in the right ear. Also wanted to point out that if you’re playing the Halloween Edition, beating Fun with Balloon Boy will give you a 2 hour boost on any of the first 5 nights and only 1 hour on any of the later nights

    Fun yet well known fact: Freddy's the only reason you can't sit in the room the whole night, as he's the only one of the sole four animatronics that can directly kill you while you're just in the center of the room. None of the others can unless you either leave a door, leave the closet, or look behind & then whether you look back or be forced to look back to the front of the room to get jumpscared. Yes, Fredbear and Nightmare can also do so, but they're not apart of the main 4 animatronics, so they don't count as that's obvious about them. Also, I have a question: can Nightmare Foxy jumpscare you when you shut the door on him when he's at the far end of one of the hallways? The reason I ask this is because this works with Bonnie & Chica, since if you see them at the very far end of the hallway, you're supposed to just run back to the center, as they don't like the light from a far away distance. But if you shut the door on them, they come right up to the door, and once you open the door & flash your light, you're as good as dead. I wonder if that works with Foxy though

    FNaF4 is definitely very unique in *always* having a threat. The other games would usually have some quiet time even on hard difficulties, but in FNaF4, whether it be Foxy, Freddy, or the always open doors, you _have to_ always be moving. Your only real downtime is at 6AM.

    @@itztaken yes That's one unique thing about alot of the fnaf games not moving atleast for me *I don't play them much and have never played 4 but once for somebody because I'm scared shitless of fnaf 4 because of the unpredictability* Is it's always more unnerving not to know what's happening In fnaf 1 you can't sit still too long as you worry foxy will get you and you won't see it coming or Freddy will get you those 2 are scarier then Bonnie and chica because while Bonnie and chica can sometimes suprise you most of the time you know it's coming, whereas Freddy and foxy are the real threats in terms of fear because you won't always know there coming because you don't have to flip up the camera for them to kill you so they can kill you whenever they please so they can always scare you Similarly fnaf 2 Foxy is the scariest He can always attack you if you take too long and he has scared me the most out of any animatronic because he's so sneakily designed to where even if you think he's got you your not sure and you don't have to flip up the mask or camera to die to him the puppet is the same way but you always know it's over when he's out unless your hoping 6 am roles around But once again that uncertainty both makes you afraid of him getting you and afraid of sitting still too long for the fear of him getting to you As for fnaf 3 Springtrap is at his scariest when you lose track of him because once more you don't know if your taking to long to get him or if you are good and what makes it scarier is when you realize he can get you really fast if you lose him because one bad vent move and he is either killing you or about too And it's even worse when you learn the Springtrap your looking at is not always him and is a second him that is fake Fnaf has always excelled with having that one threat that is unpredictable and not keeping up with him Is unsettling because for all you know youve tooken far too long and he's already ready to get you I really enjoy these videos I was disappointed that glitch tech only did fnaf 1 and so I enjoy people doing the other games since a video with pictures is easier and funner to learn it from rather than reading it I hope you do all the fnaf games I'd love to see them and I think the viewers including me also really enjoy this series of breakdowns

    Clear, concise, genuinely funny when the video calls for it, and to be quite honest, the breakdown I needed the most! I've seen a few people play FNAF4, and for some reason it's the one I struggle to follow the most. I know it's all based on sound, but because of the way some people record the game, it's sometimes tough to hear what they're hearing, and many times I'm just watching someone run to a door and react to a sound _they_ heard but _I_ didn't. This video really sheds some light on how the game works, and hopefully makes it easier to follow in the future. It's a real slam dunk of a video, and I appreciate you making it for _specifically_ this game!

    After seeing the video of how fnaf1 ai works, I am hungry for more game explanations. The ai voice narrated one for fnaf2 left me unsatisfied and Fandom does not list how they work most of the time for some reason given the resources of the reddit. So as suggested by the fnaf1 video, I went to r/technicalfnaf to read up on other games. Thanks for making this video about fnaf4, while 1 is already well made, do you plan to make one for 2, 3, and more?

    Tech Rules has been in the process of making one for FNaF2 (and some other game in the series that he won't reveal/isn't SL), so I probably won't do 2. I could do 3, I already have the documentation for basically everything, but explaining specifically the odds for where he'll move is a bit tedious, and finding the right flow to explain both Springtrap and the phantoms appears to be difficult. I have all the documentation for SL's main nights, but it's generally not that interesting. What you see is what you get for the most part. uh UCN is out of the question lol (though full documentation is out there) One for FFPS would actually be perfect, it's not *too* complex, the actual mechanics are hard to decipher while playing, there are a lot of myths I *need to* disprove, and I can provide some extra information for the minigames and such if it's a bit too short. It's also pretty much 100% documented. FFPS explained isn't going to be the next video, but it might come up at some point {:}

    Fredbear seems to have been nerfed *hard* in VR. From what I can gleam, he seems to lack randomization almost entirely if played purely reactionary; stand in the center to listen for him and he will almost always go to the right hall. Only randomization from there is if he goes in the closet or bed, but from what I experienced he appeared on the bed without fail. Worse still is if you _don't_ listen; my previous strategy consisted of checking one hall and slowly flicking the light in it about 4 times. If he doesn't appear there at the 4th, he's at the other side.
