For Halloween, I'm analyzing the sound design in the first Five Nights at Freddy's game, which demonstrates the unique roles audio can play in a horror game! Sound isn't just a scare tactic; it can support or diminish the amount of control a player feels over a nightmarish scenario.

This video's gotten a bit of information wrong. For instance, the animatronic scream in FNAF 1 is not a recording of a child screaming, it's a sound clip of a woman's scream from an 80's sci-fi horror film called _Inseminoid_ (1981). Apologies for that!

14:23 If Bonnie or Chica get in the office, they'll force the camera down and kill you. If Freddy gets in the office, he will only kill you when the camera is down. 16:07 So theres this theory that I find quite interesting. The theory is that when the pizzeria was open and the power were to go out, Freddy would start playing his song and lighting up his eyes to attempt to calm down distressed children. Since his song seems to be in a music-box-lullaby-style, this would make a lot of sense.

I think that sort of design idea exists a fair amount in the series. iirc the Toy-series animatronics attack you because they’re programmed to protect children & the Glamrocks (at least Freddy & Chica) are designed to actively aid lost or stressed children until their parents or guardians can find them. In both cases you’re just sufficiently unfortunate that they’re instead trying to kill you.

@yeah up yours too buddy I don’t remember the camera numbers, but if that’s the bottom-right camera, then yes. Just like all the animatronics, if you look at Freddy in the camera, he’ll be frozen in place for a bit. The amount of time he’s stuck for is dependent on what difficulty he’s set to. A big part of winning 4/20 mode is doing a loop of closing both doors, looking at Freddy, looking at Foxy, open both doors, repeat. It’s still really tough because the strat is mostly based on Freddy taking his time when the power runs out, which he is much less likely to do on 20 difficulty.

That ominous droning sound reminds me of some of Minecraft's cave noises.. **Shudders** Those things gave me the creeps when I was a little kid. So much so that I was _terrified_ of going into those caves, so I basically couldn't play Minecraft in its entirety until I got older and braver. Lmao. My personal least favorite (the one I'm most scared by) from all these sounds is definitely the labored breathing. It really hammers home the point of these animatronics being possessed and likely in some form of horrible, unimaginable suffering. 😣

Fun fact: Apparently according to a reply to another comment that also brought up Minecraft's creepy ambience, there's actually a set time it occurs. By hitting F3 to open that special menu, you'll find a meter labeled "mood" that gradually increases based on if you're underwater, somewhere really dark, in another dimension, and so on. And once it hits 100% the ambience will play.

I think the sting when you catch them in the doorway is ambiguous re: whether it's diagetic or non-diagetic. Yes, the base sound file seems to be a string sting... _but_ with the processing it's been put through, it ends up sounding like a mechanical groan. Also, the Freddy Laugh sound clue (in addition to still spooking you even after you know how it works) is a double-edged sword or maybe even an outright trap. Yes, it tells you about his position without checking the cameras... but focusing the camera on him is the best way to stall his approach. So having that audio cue can actually lead you astray.

As someone who wasn't introduced to the series from a playthrough and instead made to play it by older kids therefore not knowing anything or having listened to these sounds, this game was really effective. I was really scared of FNAF and was known as the kid who get's scared easily. Now that I'm older, I'm able to enjoy FNAF without fear of the unknown.

Fun fact: The scream that the animatronics give off are from the 1981 movie titled “Insominoid.” The scream is given in the movie after a woman is giving birth to an alien.
